The Moody Blues – This Is The Moody Blues $14.04 This includes a 12 page full color booklet with historical information and photos. It might surprise those coming in late to their story that the original double-LP version of this album from 1974 was the first compilation devoted to the Moody Blues` work. That`s seven years after their switch from R&B-based British Invasion rock & roll to psychedelic music, and ten years into their overall history, an awfully long time for a successful band to avoid the compilation route. That fact alone speaks volumes for how healthy their album sales were — only the group`s decision to take a hiatus seems to have prompted the assembling of this collection. The Moody Blues had actually had enough hits and charting singles between England and America since 1967 so that a good best-of could have been assembled, but the makers went far beyond that, encompassing LP tracks that had become favorites on FM radio between 1967 and 1973 and also ignoring the actual release order of anything here. So instead of a tour through their history, listeners get a kind of collage of most of their best work, the songs nicely representative of the various members` most important contributions to the group`s work. That said, however, it should also be pointed out that so much of the band`s music is connected, conceptually and thematically, with the surrounding songs on their albums that inevitably the listener will feel rushed through some of this history; additionally, there is one excellent number left off for every three that are included. The CD reissue was impressive sonically for its recompiled and remastered tape sources, and the new annotation by digital producer John Tracy was a good bonus feature. To some degree, this collection has been supplanted by the more fully programmed double-CD Gold collection from 2005. Unless all you`re looking for is an overview of the group`s classic years, in which case one can add a half-star to the rating of This Is the Moody Blues. ~ Bruce Eder Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. The Moody Blues – The Best Of The Moody Blues $10.63 THE BEST OF THE MOODY BLUES contains vintage photographs and a conversation with Justin Hayward.Producers include: Tony Clarke, 10cc, Jeff Wayne, Pip Williams, Tony Visconti.Compilation producer: Dorian Wathen.Engineers include: Tony Visconti.Recorded between 1964 and 1988. Includes liner notes by John Reed. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Audio Mixer: Tony Visconti.Liner Note Author: John Reed.By keeping it simple and sticking to the hits, this collection successfully relates the story of this pioneering band. The Moody Blues began as a Gerry & the Pacemakers-like, R&B-influenced band fronted by sad-voiced singer Denny Laine, who is heard here on "Go Now." Laine was replaced by Justin Hayward, keyboardist Mike Pinder brought in a Mellotron, and the band hooked up with the London Symphony Orchestra to make the first orchestral-rock album DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED, from which "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights in White Satin" are included on this album.Over the next few years the band banged out several gem albums that were full of a distinctive mix of folk-tinged ballads and ambitious prog-rock. Cuts from this period take up a healthy piece of this collection. After a lengthy sabbatical, the Moodies made a comeback in 1981, and with an updated sound (more synth, less Mellotron) the hits began anew. The last section of this album features the songs that brought the Moody Blues back to life. THE BEST OF THE MOODY BLUES is a definitive and accurate portrait of the group, and a good place for neophytes to begin. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

The Moody Blues – The Present $9.98 The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); Ray Thomas (vocals, flute, harmonica); John Lodge (vocals, bass); Patrick Moraz (keyboards); Graeme Edge (drums). The Moody Blues never really abandoned the majestic orchestrations that came to categorize the group`s music from the late `60s onward. But THE PRESENT is one of those albums that unquestionably reflects the time at which it was recorded. The 1983 album is thickly redolent of one of pop music`s most celebrated and infamous periods. This is an `80s album through and through, from the Pet Shop Boys-esque groove of "Blue World" to the echoing vocals on "Sitting at the Wheel" and the fervent whispers of "Going Nowhere."THE PRESENT does include several noteworthy songs, a few of which represent interesting stylistic diversions. The twangy "It`s Cold Outside of Your Heart" blends waves of synthesizer, the Moodies` de rigueur plangent strings, and a slightly countryish guitar melody. The excellent "Under My Feet" bears a strong Beatles influence. Fans of the Moody Blues` classic symphonic approach will favor the catchy ballads "Running Water" and "Sorry." The Moody Blues – Say It With Love $13.98 The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward, John Lodge, Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas, Graeme Edge.Producers include: Tony Clarke, Tony Visconti, The Moody Blues, Pip Williams,Alan Tarney.Compilation producer: Bill Levenson. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Photographer: Brian Aris.Say It With Love presents 16 previously issued love songs from the Moody Blues in remastered format. It predictably begins with the group`s two biggest hits, "Knights in White Satin" and "Your Wildest Dreams." But the set goes downhill from there, unless you`re a fan of the group`s more saccharine 1980s and `90s material. While vintage gems like "New Horizons" and "For My Lady" are nice inclusions, the majority of Say It With Love is about as substantial as cotton candy. "Bless the Wings (That Bring You Back)" is a guilty pleasure culled from the tepid 1991 effort Keys of the Kingdom, but the robotic "Say It With Love" and the George Harrison rehash ("Give Me Love" anyone?) of "Lean on Me (Tonight)" — also from Keys — appear here to dilute the festivities. Say It With Love should appeal to the Moody Blues` nostalgia tour fans, but it doesn`t cast the group`s latter-day material in a very flattering light. ~ Johnny Loftus Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. The Moody Blues – Keys Of The Kingdom $5.98 The Moody Blues: Ray Thomas (vocals, tambourine); Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); John Lodge (vocals, bass); Graeme Edge (drums).Additional personnel: Jamie Talbot (alto saxophone); Nigel Hitchcock (tenor saxophone); Guy Barker (trumpet); Peter Beachill (trombone); Patrick Moraz (keyboards); Amy Duncan (drums); Bias Boshell, Paul Bliss (programming); Stephen Mear (tap dance sequence); Pro Arte Orchestra Of London.Producers: Christopher Neil, Alan Tarney, Tony Visconti.Engineers: Tony Visconti, Pete Jones, Gerry Kitchingham.Recorded at Olympic Studios, R.G. Jones Studios and The Hit Factory in London, England.Released a decade after the Moodies` comeback album LONG DISTANCE VOYAGER, KEYS hammered home the point that the world`s oldest art-rock band had no plans to fade away. While VOYAGER added a light `80s production sheen to the group`s trademark sound, KEYS finds the group leaping whole-heartedly into state-of-the-art arrangements replete with electronic-sounding percussion, sequencers, and cavernous reverb. "Say What you Mean" even ventures into dance music. This being a Moody Blues album, there are respites like the acoustic-based ballad "Is This Heaven," but the bulk of KEYS is given over to radio-ready power ballads. It`s important to remember, though, that these are the guys who invented the power ballad, so they`ve earned the right to coast on the format for a few songs. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. There are a few misteps; "All That is Real is You" and "Forever Now" come decorated with string arrangements so overripe they recall Max Steiner scores for old Bette Davis movies, and Ray Thomas`s folkie children`s song, "My Little Lovely," is somewhere between icky and creepy. Just about everything else works, though, even Graeme Edge`s de rigueur bad poetry reading in the final "Nothing Changes." Verdict: Not dead yet by a long shot. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. The Moody Blues – Gold $15.17 The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward, Graeme Edge, John Lodge, Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas.Additional personnel: 10cc.Liner Note Author: Scott Schinder.Photographers: Brian Aris; Pieter Maz¿l; Harry Goodwin. The Moody Blues get the two-disc treatment on the latest installment of Polydor`s surprisingly thorough Gold series. Rather than just assemble the usual suspects around staples like "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Story in Your Eyes" (which are here), the compilers dove deep into the group`s career, providing tracks from solo recordings like "Remember Me My Friend" from Justin Hayward and John Lodge`s excellent Blue Jays album and their gorgeous follow-up single, "Blue Guitar," as well as lesser-known late-`70s/early-`80s cuts from Octave, The Present, and Sur la Mer. Gold also includes some of the superior, somewhat neglected album tracks from the group`s heyday, such as "Never Comes the Day," "Candle of Life," and the beautiful "Watching and Waiting," any of which could have been singles, and the last a far better track than the oft-compared "Nights in White Satin." Also significant is the dramatic improvement in the sound on these newly digitized tracks, which take full advantage of 24-bit mastering and are vastly superior even to the same cuts on 1996-vintage remastered versions of the group`s first seven albums — textures, timbres, instruments, and musical parts that were formerly buried in the mixes of the songs and only hinted at in playback are suddenly audible in sharp relief here (which leads one to ask when those, plus Octave — which was out of print as of the start of 2005 — and the other later albums, might be due for another upgrade). Listeners looking for an easy, affordable, and comprehensive guide to the Moodies will be hard-pressed to find anything better outside of 1994`s Time Traveller box set, and its sound quality can`t match what one hears on this set. ~ James Christopher Monger & Bruce Eder Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. The Moody Blues: Live at Montreux, 1991 features the veteran group performing a set of their best-known songs, including Nights in White Satin, The Story in Your Eyes, Tuesday Afternoon, Your Wildest Dreams, I’m Just a Singer (In a Rock ‘n’ Roll Band), Ride My See Saw, and many more. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide Lodge, and Ray Thomas work through a career-spanning selection of songs that includes Your Wildest Dreams, Ride My See-Saw, I’m Just a Singer (In a Rock & Roll Band), and, of course, Nights in White Satin. |

The Moody Blues – Collected $31.51 This is the Moody Blues installment in Universal Music`s Collected series. The 54 selections span the band`s nearly 40-year career — from early British Invasion-era songs through to the 2003 seasonal offering December. The original lineup hailed from Birmingham, England, and featured Ray Thomas (harmonica/vocals), Mike Pinder (keyboards/vocals), Denny Laine (vocals/guitar), Graeme Edge (drums), and Clint Warwick (bass/vocals). They had a massive worldwide smash with a remake of Bessie Banks` "Go Now" in early 1965. However, they suffered from the inability to provide a suitable follow-up, despite the undeniable groove heard on the blue-eyed soulful "From the Bottom of My Heart (I Love You)." Ultimately, Warwick and then Laine exited, replaced by John Lodge (bass/vocals) and Justin Hayward (guitar/vocals). They continued with minimal notice, even as Hayward immediately unleashed the pre-psychedelia pop of "Fly Me High" and "Cities," or the slightly more esoteric "Love and Beauty" and "A Simple Game." It wasn`t until the combo hedged their bets and turned in the rock-meets-symphonic masterpiece Days of Future Passed (1967) that the Moodies were able to truly define their sound. Collected serves up key material from the "classic seven" long-players Days of Future Passed, In Search of the Lost Chord (1968), On the Threshold of a Dream (1969), To Our Children`s Children`s Children (1969), A Question of Balance (1970), Every Good Boy Deserves Favour (1971), and Seventh Sojourn (1972). There are likewise cuts from several solo and offshoot albums. Most notably, the Hayward/Lodge effort Blue Jays (1972) ("Blue Guitar" and "Remember Me [My Friend]"), Hayward`s excellent solo album Songwriter (1977) ("Raised on Love"), and Lodge`s criminally underrated Natural Avenue (1977) ("Carry Me"). The late-`70s re-formation with Octave (1978), "Forever Autumn" from Jeff Wayne`s War of the Worlds (1978), and Hayward`s Night Flight (1980) LP — with the hard to find "It`s Not On" — are also covered. The Moodies in the `80s were able to rack up even more MOR rockers such as "The Voice," "Gemini Dream," "Your Wildest Dreams," "I Know You`re Out There Somewhere," and "Say It with Love." While die-hard enthusiasts might have the odd personal favorite left off, thanks to recent remastering and a better than average tune stack, Collected (2007) is decidedly more desirable an overview than most other available Moodies anthologies. ~ Lindsay Planer Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. The Moody Blues – Seventh Sojourn [7/15] $13.16 The Moody Blues: Mike Pinder, Justin Hayward, Ray Thomas, John Lodge, Graeme Edge.Recorded at Tollington Park Studios, London, England. Originally released on Threshold (7). Includes liner notes by John Reed.Digitally remastered by Steve Fallone (Polygram Studios). The Moody Blues: Mike Pinder, Justin Hayward, Ray Thomas, John Lodge, Graeme Edge.Recorded at Tollington Park Studios, London, England. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is a DTS CD, which features DTS 5.1 Surround Sound technology and is playable on a DTS-capable 5.1 Surround Sound system. The Moody Blues: Mike Pinder, Justin Hayward, Ray Thomas, John Lodge, Graeme Edge.Recorded at Tollington Park Studios, London, England. While the Moodies were never exactly a rocker`s delight, SEVENTH SOJOURN, the seventh recording with the post-Denny Laine lineup, is perhaps their most ballad-heavy album. Ironically, the album`s biggest hit, which would become one of the group`s signature songs, was the uncharacteristically uptempo "I`m Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band." Elsewhere, appearances are equally deceiving; interpersonal tensions had developed in the band to the point where there wouldn`t be another Moody Blues album for six years, but the album is full of slow, romantic musings, not signs of strife. As usual, it`s Justin Hayward, he of the silky voice and heart-on-a-sleeve lyricism, who excels at all this romantic balladry, his contributions being the most melodic and affecting. John Lodge`s aforementioned "I`m Just a Singer" is far and away the most energetic tune, but it closes the album and doesn`t disturb the contemplative mood. Ironically, though the band was coming apart, they were also reaching new heights. Keyboardist Mike Pinder had traded in his Mellotron for its more sophisticated cousin, the Chamberlain, which provided an improved overall sound on SEVENTH SOJOURN. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. The Moody Blues – A Question of Balance [7/15] $13.84 The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward, Graeme Edge, John Lodge, Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas.Engineers: Derek Varnals, Adrian Martins, Robin Thompson.Includes liner notes by John Reed. All tracks have been digitally remastered. The beautifully remastered version of the Moody Blues`s 1970 back-to-basics album (translation: they cut way back on the overdubs) strips away the original aural murk at last, and includes informative liner-note interviews with the band about the recording process. Standout tracks include the classic sort-of protest song "Question" and "It`s Up to You," one of singer/guitarist Justin Hayward`s most authoritatively wistful riff-rockers.There is a clear attempt to pare back the lush excesses of their earlier work in favor of a leaner rock sound, as heard on cuts like John Lodge`s pell-mell "The Tortoise and the Hare." Still, one of the album`s standouts is Ray Thomas`s "And the Tide Rushes In," a lovely psychedelic ballad of the sort that moved the Who`s Pete Townshend to remark that the Moody Blues` albums were so gorgeously produced that listening to them was like "being in church." A QUESTION OF BALANCE is a fine album, and a clear preparation for its successor EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR, one of the band`s finest moments. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. The Moody Blues – On the Threshold of a Dream [7/15] $13.71 The Moody Blues: Mike Pinder, Justin Hayward, Ray Thomas, John Lodge, Graeme Edge.Additional personnel: Pete Jackson (triangle).Originally released on Deram (1035). Includes liner notes by John Reed.Digitally remastered by Steve Fallone (PolyGram Studios). The Moody Blues: Mike Pinder, Justin Hayward, Ray Thomas, John Lodge, Graeme Edge.Additional personnel: Pete Jackson (triangle).Includes liner notes by David Lymonds and Lionel Bart.Where this album`s predecessor IN SEARCH OF THE LOST CHORD dipped deeply into Eastern-flavored psychedelia, THRESHOLD is more of a straightforward rock record. Things open up experimentally enough, with a spoken-word vignette over electronic drones, but this leads straight into one of the Moodies` poppiest, most up-tempo songs, "Lovely to see You," which would remain a concert favorite for decades. Even notoriously theatrical flautist/vocalist Ray Thomas keeps his eccentricities in check on his effective ballad "Dear Diary."Keyboardist Mike Pinder takes a surprisingly lascivious vocal turn on the anomalous, leering rocker "So Deep Within You." Justin Hayward provides the lion`s share of ear-tickling moments with pretty folk-rock tunes such as "Never Comes the Day" and "Are you Sitting Comfortably," while the most adventurous piece "Have you Heard/The Voyage" extends over three discrete tracks, featuring complex instrumental passages and lush harmonies. THRESHOLD doesn`t come off as an attempt to cater to the mainstream, it`s just a more song-based, less exotic recording than its predecessors. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. The Moody Blues – Long Distance Voyager $9.98 The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); Ray Thomas (vocals, flute, harmonica); John Lodge (bass, background vocals); Patrick Moraz (keyboards); Graeme Edge (drums).Additional personnel: The New World Philharmonic. The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); Ray Thomas (vocals, flute, harmonica); Patrick Moraz (keyboards); John Lodge (bass, background vocals); Graeme Edge (drums).Additional personnel: The New World Philharmonic.LONG DISTANCE VOYAGER signaled the revitalization of the Moodies. After a six-year layoff, they`d regrouped for 1978`s OCTAVE, which met with mixed reviews. Three years later, the updated sound of VOYAGER brought them back to the top of the charts. Ex-Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz`s synthesizers replace Mike Pinder`s Mellotron, and there`s a distinct early-`80s sheen to the upbeat hits "Gemini Dream," which chronicles the band`s comeback efforts quite literally, and "The Voice." "Talking out of Turn" sounds like nothing so much as a more sophisticated Little River Band, but one cannot deny its gentle, bouncy appeal.Gentle, acoustic ballads like "In my World" and "Nervous," however, wouldn`t sound out of place on ON THE THRESHOLD OF A DREAM. For the diehards, Ray Thomas (whose flute is conspicuously absent in much of this `80s-centric production) provides that essential element of quirky British theatricality with his closing, self-referential triptych of "Painted Smile," "Reflective Smile," and "Veteran Cosmic Rocker." The last of these offerings proves that the Moodies have more self-knowledge than their critics would like to believe. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

The Moody Blues – Caught Live + 5 $9.98 The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); John Lodge (vocals, bass); Ray Thomas (vocals, flute); Graeme Edge (drums).Engineers include: Bill Price, John Punter, Derek Varnals.Principally recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall, London, England on December 12, 1969.Digitally remastered by Steven Fallone.Personnel: Justin Hayward, John Lodge (vocals, guitar); Ray Thomas (vocals, flute); Michael Pinder (vocals, keyboards); Graeme Edge (drums).Recording information: Royal Albert Hall, London, England (05/19/1967-12/12/1969).Due to interpersonal strife, the Moody Blues called it quits between 1972`s SEVENTH SOJOURN and 1978`s OCTAVE. Presumably attempting to satiate hungry Moodies fans, Threshold released this vintage concert recording from a 1969 Royal Albert Hall show. The band was young and at the peak of its popularity, and they sound full of promise and ambition. Most of the songs come from their classic concept album DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED and its two successors. Having not yet settled into a more comfortable ballad mode, the group was at the peak of its psych/prog powers. Mike Pinder`s Mellotron is unleashed in all its faux-string section glory on "Tuesday Afternoon" and the evergreen "Nights in White Satin," and Ray Thomas`s pixie-like flute presence colors pretty ballads such as "Are you Sitting Comfortably?" The most impressive thing about CAUGHT LIVE is that the Moodies, whose reputation was made on their larger-than-life studio achievements, proved more than equal to the task of reproducing these achievements live. As a bonus, there are five tracks appended to CAUGHT LIVE, studio rarities from the same time period. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

The Moody Blues – The Magnificent Moodies [10/30] $12.99 This 1998 reissue includes 7 bonus tracks not included on the original release.Includes liner notes by H.J. Simon. An expanded version, with non LP-singles, of one of the best debut albums of the British Invasion, THE MAGNFICENT MOODIES collects essentially every note recorded by the original Moody Blues, at this point a tough little R&B band fronted by soulfully voiced Denny Laine. Like most English bands of the period, the Moodies covered songs by black American acts both famous and obscure–the album`s big hit, " Go Now," was in fact a faithful version of a failed American single by the today little-known Bessie Banks. They also take on James Brown (definitive readings of "I`ll Go Crazy" and "I Don`t Mind") as well as bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson`s "Bye Bye Bird," but they weren`t averse to copping pop tunes, demonstrated here by their appropriation of "I`ve Got a Dream," by Brill Building legends Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich.Just about everything here is worth hearing, with the forgivable exceptions of an overwrought take on Gershwin`s "It Ain`t Necessarily So" and a surprisingly stiff rendition of "Time Is on My Side" (yes, the same song the Stones covered). If you only know the Moody Blues from their second incarnation as symphonic popmeisters, this will be a major eye opener. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

James Moody – James Moody [Remaster] $10.98 Personnel: James Moody (flute, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Musa Kaleem (baritone saxophone); Tom McIntosh (trombone); Gene Kee (piano); John Latham (bass guitar); Clarence Johnston (drums).James Moody`s self-titled disc from 1959 is a solidly swinging date that finds Moody splitting his time between flute, alto, and tenor sax. His sextet is made up of mostly obscure players, though trumpeter Johnny Coles had a couple of records as a leader. The session was the first for Moody following his stay at Overbrook Hospital and he certainly sounds rejuvenated on uptempo tunes like "Daahoud," "Darben the Redd Foxx," and "Cookie." His work on flute is especially nice on the ballads "Little Girl Blue" and "Yesterdays." Best of all is "R.B.Q.," a funky blues workout that closes the record in style and features Moody on tenor blowing his soul out. This record is a fine example of what makes Moody so wonderful; his exuberance, thoughtfulness, and soul make him one of the greats. If you haven`t discovered him yet, this is a good place to start. If you`re already hip to the man, this is a vital addition to your collection. ~ Tim Sendra Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

They abandoned the orchestra but kept their sound as rich as before by playing a multitude of instruments themselves, including everything from sitar to cello to oboe. At the time, it was remarkable enough for these instruments to appear on a rock record, much less to be played by the band itself. The string-laden conceptual pieces of DAYS were replaced by shorter, more concise songs that leaned more toward Beatlesque pop and displayed a pronounced Eastern influence.Graham Edge`s short spoken-word pieces provide a properly arty framework for the Moodies` blend of swooping mellotron, haunting flute, and rich, multi-tracked harmonies. The slightly Hollies-ish "Ride my Seesaw," one of the band`s strongest rockers, is a highlight. Flutist/vocalist Ray Thomas provides the quirky Britishness so essential to `60s UK pop-rock with his music-hall-on-acid number "Dr. Livingstone I Presume |

The Moody Blues – Live at Montreux 1991 (DVD) $11.3 One of rock`s longest-running acts, the Moody Blues began as a mid-1960s British Invasion band before turning to psychedelic pop later in the decade. In the 1970s, the Blues evolved into purveyors of melodic, classically influenced songs that split the distance between progressive rock and pop, a sound they carried through several decades. This program finds the Moody Blues performing at the 1991 Montreux Jazz Festival–their only appearance at the prestigious event–in support of that year`s KEYS OF THE KINGDOM album. Longtime band members Justin Hayward, Graeme Edge, John Lodge, and Ray Thomas work through a career-spanning selection of songs that includes Your Wildest Dreams, Ride My See-Saw, I`m Just a Singer (In a Rock& Roll Band), and, of course, Nights in White Satin. |

MOODY BLUES: EVERY GOOD BOY DESERV(GERM) $45.98 The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); John Lodge (vocals, bass instrument); Ray Thomas (flute, harmonica); Mike Pinder (keyboards); Graeme Edge (drums, percussion).Though this 1971 release was issued at a time of enormous commercial success for the Moody Blues, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR contains some of the band’s most adventurous music. The band had recently discovered the Moog synthesizer, and its presence is felt on much of the album. The opening “Procession” instantly sets this collection’s experimental course, landing like a spacecraft among reams of cascading synthesizer before evolving into a soundscape of cricket chirps, thunderclaps, and tribal chanting. The next three minutes contain one of the most cathartic sonic explorations the band has ever put forth.Other standout tracks include “After You Came,” which features tessellated vocal layering and bluesy guitar work; “Emily,” a song that John Lodge wrote for his daughter; and the rapturously symphonic “You Can Never Go Home.” Rich, complex, powerful, and beautifully produced, EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR brings together all of the Moody Blues’ best qualities in one album, standing as the culmination of their fine ’60s work, and the standard-bearer for the music to come. |

The Moody Blues – BBC Sessions 1967 – 1970 $23.74 While not a complete or exhaustive collection of the Moody Blues` appearances on the BBC, this two-disc compilation is a worthy overview of the band`s live, in-studio performances. Likewise, as over a dozen tracks are not available elsewhere on CD, BBC SESSIONS 1967-1970 (2007) perfectly complements the BBC-sourced bonus tracks found on the expanded editions of the Moodies classic back catalog. Taken primarily in a chronological fashion, the anthology kicks off with several post Denny Laine/Clint Warwick era songs that likewise pre-date the band`s DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED (1967) incarnation, while the audio from a few of the band`s television appearances make up a sizable portion of the second disc. Worth mentioning is the 16-page liner booklet with rarely published photos and a brief history of the Moody Blues` relationship with the BBC. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
