TV?
Is television the substance of the Nation?
One of the many I'm afraid. It is ridiculously easy to sit in front of the glass, day after day, hour after hours and live agent through characters on the screen. Children do it … they imitate what they watch, their play is filled with superheroes and such. Women do, to know their favorite soap character most intimate details as well as they know the contents of their own toilets, and more, the debate and wrangling over happenings at these shows. Reality / game shows, where the success of a participant / candidate is dependent on an audience that represents a bond with and vote for the top of each other, regardless of the persons for profit. Media, in all its forms, is addictive … how unfortunate it is that we, and yes I am including myself, have to find televisions, etc., as an escape from ourselves.

Television
$65.48 First published in 1976, Television: The Critical View set the foundation for the serious study of television, becoming the gold standard of anthologies in the field. With this seventh edition, editor Horace Newcomb has moved the book from one merely intended to legitimize the critical inquiry of television to a text that reflects how complex critical approaches to television have become today. Comprised of virtually all new selections that deal with both classic and contemporary programming, the seventh edition adds new material on television history, the reception context of television, and international programming such as Chinese soap operas and Brazilian telenovelas. Television: The Critical View remains a well established and critically acclaimed text essential for courses in critical studies, communication studies, cultural studies, media history, television criticism, television history, and broadcasting. |

On Television
$27.98 On Television has long been regarded as one of the best critiques of television ever published, offering a lucid, jargon-free and impressively concise analysis of every aspect of the television industry from the images on our screens to the organisations that produce (and manipulate) those images. it is an invaluable introduction to the world of television broadcasting as an integral part of the mass media which impinges so greatly on our lives. |

On Television
$12.98 Hailed by the New York Times as "illuminating...vivid and clearheaded," Pierre Bourdieu's "acid appraisal [of television] will provide shudders of recognition for American readers" (Publishers Weekly). France's leading sociologist shows how, far from reflecting the tastes of the majority, television, particularly television journalism, imposes ever-lower levels of political and social discourse on us all. Quickly selling out its first hardcover edition, On Television has provoked widespread comment among journalists, academics, and television viewers. Katha Pollitt wrote, "anyone seriously interested in journalism must read this book," and Todd Gitlin called it "indispensable." |

Television
$65.48 Written in clear and lively prose, Television explains how television programs and commercials are made, and how they function as producers of meaning. Author Jeremy Butler demonstrates the ways in which cinematography and videography, acting, lighting, set design, editing, and sound combine to produce meanings that viewers take away from their television experience. This popular text teaches students to read between the lines, encouraging them to incorporate critical thinking into their own television viewing. Television provides essential critical and historical context, lucidly explaining how different critical methods have been applied to the medium, such as genre study, ideological criticism, and cultural studies. Hundreds of illustrations from television programs introduce the reader to the varied ways in which television goes about telling stories, presenting news, and selling products, and a companion Web site (www.TVcrit.com) supplements the text with color frame grabs and illustrative video clips. Highlights of this third edition include:*new segments on “reality” television and television animation since 1990;*an updated and expanded chapter surveying critical methods applied to television;*a wide variety of examples, including recent television shows; and*a supplemental DVD to provide teachers with video examples and exercises. With its distinctive approach to examining television, this text is appropriate for courses in television studies, media criticism, and general critical studies. In addition, Television will encourage critical thinking in television production courses. |

$52.48 For better or worse, television has been the dominant medium of communication for 50 years. Almost all American households have a television set; many have more than one. Transmitting images and sounds electronically is a relatively recent invention, one that required passionate inventors, determined businessmen, government regulators, and willing consumers. This volume in the Greenwood Technographies series covers the history of television from 19th-century European conceptions of transmitting moving images electrically to the death of TV as a discrete system in a digital age. Magoun also discusses the changing face of television in the displays that people watch around the globe. Television: The Life Story of a Technology discusses significant developments in the technological and social lives of people during the history of the television. It appeals to students and lay readers alike by highlighting key events and people: BLthe American engineers and entrepreneurs such as Vladimir Zworykin and David Sarnoff who ignited the television industry; BLthe bloom of programming choices in tandem with the Baby Boom generation; BLthe developmetn of cable and satellite TV; BLthe Asians who innovated American inventions in videorecording and flat-panel displays; BLthe use of TV in wartime; BLand the new worlds of digital and high-definition television. Based on the latest research, this crisply written, sometimes provocative survey includes a glossary, timeline, and bibliography for further information. Vladimir Zworykin -- whose work ignited the entire television industry BLHow the television industry and commercial programming bloomed in tandem with the Baby Boom generation The late-twentieth century expansion of cable television and the decline of the broadcast networks, and the new world of high-definition television. The volume includes a glossary of terms, a timeline of important events, and a selected bibliography of resources for further information. |

Television
$48.98 From its earliest beginnings, television was destined to become one of the great new forces at work in the twentieth century. This new edition (which includes six completely new chapters) greatly expands the original and unique historical coverage of this most influential cultural phenomenon. Written by a distinguished international team of specialists, the book describes the history of television from its technical conception in the nineteenth century right through to the bewildering multi-media developments of the present. Alongside this historical account, chapters provide important discussion of the central debates affecting television world-wide, from America, Canada, and Britain to Europe, Scandinavia, Japan, China, South Asia, the Arab world, Australia, Africa, and the Third World. All genres of programme making--news, sport, drama, comedy--are examined in the light of key questions: how viewing practices affect particular societies; how standards of taste and decency are arrived at; the influence of television of government power; the role of public service broadcasting; and the relationship of television to terrorism and violence. A thought-provoking Epilogue ponders the likely impact and influence of television in the coming years. This book is accessibly written and is a major exploration of the world's most dominant medium. QUOTES FROM THE FIRST EDITION `Those who wish to take a close look at the way television has affected the lives of people in other countries as well as their own will find all the information they need here . . . a work which will earn its keep in the reference libraries, but also merits a place on the bookshelves of individuals.' THES `For those desiring to fully understand the medium that has dominated the later twentieth century.' The Business of Film `What a terrific assembly of contributors to document an international story of television . . . so many outstanding features in this book . . . an important addition to documenting the global story of television in a single volume.' $3.98 The amusingly odd protagonist and narrator of Jean-Philippe Toussaint's novel is an academic on sabbatical in Berlin to work on his book about Titian. With his research completed, all he has left to do is sit down and write. Unfortunately, he can't decide how to refer to his subject--Titian, le Titien, Vecellio, or Titian Vecellio--so instead he starts watching TV continuously, until one day he decides to renounce the most addictive of twentieth-century inventions. As he spends his summer still not writing his book, he is haunted by television, from the video surveillance screens in a museum to a moment when it seems everyone in Berlin is tuned in to Baywatch. One of Toussaint's funniest antiheroes, the protagonist of Television turns daily occurrences into an entertaining reflection on society and the influence of television on our lives. |

If the medium really is the message, Williams asks, what is left for us to do or say? $15.98 On Television, Baaba Maal collaborates with Didi Gutman and Sabina Sciubba of New York's Brazilian Girls to fashion an album that combines subtle electronica with his own kind of Senegalese pop. The album took three years to record, and one track, the softly percolating dance tune "International," appeared the previous year on the Brazilian Girls CD New York City. The tune is club-friendly, with Maal delivering an unusually subdued vocal. The mix here is shorter and lacks the dub-like effects the Brazilian Girls dropped between verses on New York City. The album opens with the title track, a Maal/Brazilian Girls collaboration. A muted guitar figure that sounds like a music box floats below a funky samba-like beat. The African percussion embroiders the mix without overwhelming the bouncy club pulse. "Tindo" blends a drum loop, talking drum, and electric bass to propel the subtle intertwining vocals of Maal and Sciubba. "Miracle" sounds like South African jive. Long sustained electric guitar notes introduce this lilting, happy dance tune and Maal and Sciubba turn in a playful duet that skims across the glittering surface of the music. "Cantaloupe" was written by Maal, Gutman, and Barry Reynolds, the guitar player with the legendary Compass Point studio band. The melody has the Latin/Caribbean feel typical of American '30s movie musicals, while Maal contributes a traditional Senegalese vocal. A programmed rhythm track starts about midway through, to add a modern element to another laid-back track. Maal and Sciubba co-wrote "A Song for Women," a tune praising the power of African women, and it's another surprisingly mellow effort. Maal's vocals float in and out of the mix in a dub-like manner; hand percussion accents the song's drum loop without overwhelming its steady thrum. The album closes with two simmering acoustic tracks. "Dakar Moon," sung by Maal partially in English, has a vague Caribbean lilt that recalls the Cuban hotel music of the island's pre-revolutionary past. Sounds of nature -- the wind in palm trees, the shushing of the tide -- fill the background with Barry Reynolds adding some flamenco-flavored guitar. "Tindo Quando," another take on "Tindo," features Maal's acoustic guitar and a subtle balafon supporting the vocals of Maal and Sciubba. Sciubba sings a counter-melody in Italian to complement Maal's Fonyi vocal. Both singers hold back to show off the softer, melodic side of their vocal prowess. ~ j. poet, All Music GuidePerformers: Mbarra Cisse - Bass; Simon Clarke - Saxophone; Massamba Diop - Percussion; |
