The Modern Jazz Quartet and Orchestra
$12.98 For this set, the Modern Jazz Quartet (pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Connie Kay) were joined by a Germany symphony orchestra conducted by Gunther Schuller. Although these third-stream pieces (Schuller's three-movement "Concertino for Jazz Quartet & Orchestra," Andre Hodeir's "Around the Blues," Werner Heider's "Divertimento" and Lewis' inventive adaptation of "England's Carol") may not have had much potential, they avoid the potential pitfalls of being overly serious and pompous that sometimes plague similar works. "Around the Blues" has its swinging moments; most of the pieces are episodic, with good spots for Jackson and Lewis' soloing. Overall, this is a successful effort worth listening to several times. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Milt Jackson - Vibraphone; Percy Heath - Bass; Connie Kay - Drums; John Richard Lewis - Piano |

The Artistry of the Modern Jazz Quartet
$11.98 Spanning one of the few transitional periods for the Modern Jazz Quartet when Connie Kay replaced Kenny Clarke as the group's drummer, The Artistry of the Modern Jazz Quartet covers the years from 1952-1955. By this point in the group's career, John Lewis was largely overseeing the quartet's repertoire, penning the bulk of the original material. Indeed, on The Artistry Of, the pianist contributes six compositions to Milt Jackson's one (the excellent "Ralph's New Blues"). The set is balanced out by renditions of the most common of jazz standards in "Almost Like Falling in Love," "I'll Remember April," and "In a Sentimental Mood," and the work of more contemporary artists like Dizzy Gillespie and Sonny Rollins. Though the chops of each member are undeniable, the performances are, for the most part, rather reserved, placing technique and group coordination above strong emotion. Lewis' "La Ronde" was an early favorite, and it's easy to see why. Here the all-rhythm lineup is completely locked in, particularly the drums and vibes, and the head packs a punch lacking on much of the material. Jackson balances restraint and umph! on a memorable solo while Lewis responds with excellent bopisms on piano. Two songs later, however, the group are strolling through the awkward "The Queen's Fancy," a composition whose overly sentimental melody line, complete with regal undertones, has faired less well over time. More impressive are readings of "Rose of the Rio Grande" and Lewis' "Delaunay's Dilemma." In 1951, the MJQ had backed Sonny Rollins on a Prestige date, and The Artistry Of finds the saxophonist repaying the favor, lending prime solos to a handful of cuts including his own "The Stopper" and "No Moe." In the end, this album is a fine introduction to the sound and sensibility of the MJQ. ~ Nathan Bush, All Music GuidePerformers: Milt Jackson - Vibraphone; Kenny Clarke - Drums; Percy Heath - Bass; Connie Kay - Drums; John Richard Lewis - Piano; John Lewis - Piano; Sonny Rollins - Sax (Tenor) |

The Art of the Modern Jazz Quartet
$22.98 This excellent double LP gives listeners a fine overview of The Modern Jazz Quartet's many recordings for the Atlantic label during a nine-year period. There are 15 selections taken from 13 different albums with the highpoints including "Bags' Groove" (with Sonny Rollins), "Lonely Woman," "Django," "Sketch (For Double Quartet)" (with The Beaux Arts String Quartet), "Bluesology" and "Concorde." Although a good set for beginners, it is better to try to acquire the complete albums of The MJQ instead since they recorded many other rewarding performances for Atlantic not on this two-fer. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Milt Jackson - Vibraphone; Joe Tekula - Cello; Jimmy Cleveland - Trombone; Jimmy Giuffre - Clarinet; Bernie Glow - Trumpet; Percy Heath - Bass; Wally Kane - Sax (Baritone); Connie Kay - Drums; Jimmy Lewis - Bass; John G. The Quartet
$10.99 Full performer name: Modern Jazz Quartet/Milt Jackson.Personnel: Milt Jackson (vibraphone); John Lewis (piano); Percy Heath, Ray Brown (bass); Kenny Clarke, Al Jones (drums).Originally released on Savoy (MG 12046). Includes original release liner notes by Edward Jardim. This 1955 date is an intriguing opportunity to hear Milt Jackson accompanied by the MJQ rhythm section, but with hard-bopper Horace Silver substituting for John Lewis. Not only that, it's also a chance to hear a hitherto unknown, lushly romantic side of both Jackson and Silver, two blues-oriented players who rarely if ever recorded standards in this sort of style. What with the excellent recording quality, it's still a perfect album for intimate dinners and other late-night activties. Artie Shaw's exotic "Moonray" is rarely heard in any sort of context while "My Funny Valentine" and "The Nearness Of You" set the mood throughout. This fine compilation brings together the very first recordings by the Modern Jazz Quartet (which was then billed as the Milt Jackson Quartet). The MJQ mixed bluesy bop with a heady, sophisticated approach (the latter heightened by the group's self-representation as a buttoned-up, chamber jazz ensemble), and the seeds of that aesthetic are heard to excellent effect. This set of mostly originals ("'Round Midnight" and Hoagy Carmichael's "Heart and Soul" are the notable exceptions) gives the quartet plenty of room to stretch out, with Jackson's gorgeous, cool-toned vibes leading the way. |

Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler.Digitally remastered by JVC using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) technology. The Modern Jazz Quartet: John Lewis (piano); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Percy Heath (upright bass); Kenny Clarke (drums).Refined, supremely accomplished, and possessed of a unique sound (courtesy of Milt Jackson`s shimmering vibes), the Modern Jazz Quartet set a new standard for the jazz group as chamber ensemble. DJANGO puts these qualities on display, with variety and technical prowess to spare. The title track, a tribute to Gypsy guitar-king Django Reinhardt, written by pianist John Lewis, sets the stage with its bop excursions and change-ups from cool swing to minor-key moodiness (which also appropriately mirrors Reinhardt`s music and life). The group`s take on "Two Bass Hit" lets bassist Percy Heath take center stage, with support and accents from the others."La Ronde Suite" is a near-10-minute four-part suit of shifting colors, highlighting each member on their respective instruments (drummer Kenny Clarke takes a rare solo spot here). Two more Lewis tunes, "The Queen`s Fancy" (a jazzy march) and the ballad "Milano," bracket two notable readings of standards--"Autumn in New York" (Jackson`s vibes create a wistful effect) and "But Not For Me." For an early demonstration of the MJQ`s classic sound (it was recorded in 1953), DJANGO remains one of the key albums in their discography. Modern Jazz Quartet - Blues On Bach
$11.98 This album has an interesting concept, alternating four original blues with five adaptations of melodies from classical works by Bach. The Modern Jazz Quartet had long been quite adept in both areas, and despite a certain lack of variety on this set (alternating back and forth between the two styles somewhat predictably), the music is largely enjoyable. Vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis (doubling here on harpsichord), bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay were still all very much in their musical prime during the 21st year of the MJQ`s existence. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Sonny Rollins - With The Modern Jazz Quartet
$10.98 Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Miles Davis (trumpet); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); John Lewis, Kenny Drew (piano); Percy Heath (bass); Kenny Clarke, Roy Haynes, Art Blakey (drums).Recorded on January 17 and December 17, 1951 and on October 7, 1953. Originally released on Prestige (7029). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler.Always gifted with a big band sound and a pure sense of swing, Sonny Rollins did not emerge full-blown from the foam like Venus. He gained polish and experience with Bud Powell, J.J. Johnson, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, before making his Prestige debut as a leader at the tender age of 21. WITH THE MODERN JAZZ QUARTET celebrates the tenor saxophonist`s first three 10-inch LPs--MAMBO JAZZ, SONNY ROLLINS QUARTET, and SONNY ROLLINS WITH MILT JACKSON--and is culled from sessions in December of 1951 and October of 1953.There is much joy and rhythmic elation in Rollins` early vamp figures such as "Shadrack" and "Scoops," where he preaches with a stomping fervor that anticipates the hard bop movement. On "Newk`s Fadeaway," he hints at the harmonic freedom and plasticity of line that would distinguish his early triumphs, while "Mambo Bounce" (sampled early and often by the acid jazz crowd) is a delightful early mixture of Afro-Cuban and swing textures, prefiguring his later uses of calypso melodies and rhythms. And while Rollins` ballad playing doesn`t approach the harmonic depths he would routinely invoke in later years, his smoky tone and behind-the-beat phrasing suggest an affinity for middle period Lester Young ("This Love Of Mine" and "With A Song In My Heart"), even as his thicker timbre and robust articulation point to Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster ("With Time On My Hands"). By the time he takes on Ellington`s "In A Sentimental Mood" with the Modern Jazz Quartet, his tone has really filled out and he`s improvising with a broader range of inflections. "The Stopper" offers a garish chase with cute starts and stops, while "No Moe" is a classic line that inspires vigorous, easy-going blues interplay. And for hard swinging, "It`s Almost Like Being In Love" hints at future virtuoso turns on the popular song. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Sonny Rollins with the Modern Jazz Quartet
$11.98 Included here are some of Sonny Rollins' earliest sessions as a bandleader. These are among the fresh and vibrant baker's dozen of selections on Sonny Rollins With the Modern Jazz Quartet (1953). The title is a bit misleading though, since the MJQ -- with John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibes), Percy Heath (bass), and Kenny Clarke (drums) -- is only accounted for during the first four sides. There is a playful and energetic tone that ricochets from Jackson's fluid vibes, landing firmly in Rollins' musical court. One prime example of this interaction is heard throughout the solos on the opening track, "Stopper." Similarly, "Almost Like Falling in Love" bops, weaves, and swings throughout, with some expressive contributions via Lewis, effectively linking Rollins' and Jackson's solos. "No Moe," which stands as one of the best originals on the disc, also bears their undeniable connection. Another not-to-be-missed reading is the sultry "In a Sentimental Mood." Here, Rollins spirals mature and ethereal lines against Jackson's resonant intonation and shimmer. If just for these tunes, Sonny Rollins With the Modern Jazz Quartet is a vital component in any jazz enthusiasts' collection. The rest of the disc is performed by Rollins and a quartet that also includes the talents of Kenny Drew (piano), the MJQ's Percy Heath (bass), and the main Jazz Messenger, Art Blakey (drums). On the original tune "Scoops," Blakey's hardball antics provide well-placed sonic interjections, punctuating Rollins' highly infectious melodic sense. While on the subject of catchy tunes, all ears should be directed to the biblically derived title "Shadrack," which had been a signature piece for Louis Armstrong. This early incarnation of the Sonny Rollins Quartet has rarely sounded as cohesive, as they collectively percolate with their definitive execution. Of particular note is the inclusion of Miles Davis' "I Know." This extension of Charlie Parker's "Confirmation" features Davis on piano accompanying Rollins with solid chord progressions, allowing the burgeoning player to lead his first-ever quartet with Heath and Roy Haynes (drums). ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music GuidePerformers: Milt Jackson - Vibraphone; Art Blakey - Drums; Kenny Clarke - Drums; Miles Davis - Piano; Kenny Drew - Piano; Roy Haynes - Drums; |

Modern Jazz Quartet - Dedicated To Connie
$18.01 Modern Jazz Quartet: John Lewis (piano); Milt Jackson (vibraharp); Percy Heath (bass); Connie Kay (drums).Recorded live in Ljubljana, Slovenia on May 27, 1960. Includes liner notes by John Lewis.Regarding this 1960 live date, recorded in Slovenia, group leader John Lewis writes in the album liner notes, "In my opinion, never before or since has the Modern Jazz Quartet played better, whether on stage or in the recording studio." That`s quite a statement, but the performances herein give little cause for dispute. The MJQ`s unique blend of elements is all here, including their chamber-music sensibility (which features a classical feel for the extended line, along with Ellingtonian themes and flourishes) fused with hard-bop aesthetics. Pianist Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay display true inspiration here. The two-disc set captures one of the most remarkable qualities of the group, and that is its ability to sound studied and precise, while maintaining melodic and rhythmic variation. A few standards ("`Round Midnight;" "How High the Moon") pepper this list of mostly originals, including Lewis`s classic "Django" and Jackson`s smooth-moving "Bag`s Groove." The tapes from this remarkable concert were discovered during `95 in the months following Kay`s death, and the album--a testament to the group`s unique sound and chemistry--was released in Kay`s memory. The Best of the Modern Jazz Quartet [Pablo]
$10.98 Decent overview of late-period Modern Jazz Quartet sessions that were recorded for Pablo in the early '80s, after pianist John Lewis, vibist Milt Jackson, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay renewed their musical association in 1982 following a lengthy absence. They only made a few albums for Pablo in the mid-'80s before returning to Atlantic, but both were excellent. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music GuidePerformers: Milt Jackson - Vibraphone; Percy Heath - Bass; Connie Kay - Drums; John Lewis - Piano |

Modern Jazz Quartet - The Complete Last Concert
$23.71 Modern Jazz Quartet: John Lewis (piano); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Percy Heath (bass); Connie Kay (drums).Recorded at Avery Fisher Hall, New York on November 25, 1974.3 LPs on 2 CDs.Modern Jazz Quartet: Milt Jackson (vibraharp); John Lewis (piano); Percy Heath (bass); Connie Kay (drums).Recorded live at Avery Fisher Hall, New York on November 25, 1974. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. This two-disc live set features the Modern Jazz Quartet in its final concert (at New York City`s Lincoln Center in 1974). Though the group would later reunite in the early `80s, there is the distinct feel of retrospective here, looking back on a career of remarkable invention and artistry. Both qualities are in ample evidence during this performance, which showcases the remarkable solo and ensemble playing of John Lewis (piano), Milt Jackson (vibes), Percy Heath (bass), and Connie Kay (drums). The quartet is most notable for its blend of a chamber approach (in its use of the small group with carefully articulated interplay) and the rootsy groove of jazz. Though European classicism inside syncopated swing is (in many ways) the very structure of jazz, the MJQ drove the marriage home. (Even in appearance, they commanded respect by wearing tuxedos on stage.) Whether on standards ("Summertime," "A Night in Tunisia") or excellent originals ("Django," "Bags` Groove"), the MJQ display--in addition to superior musicianship--an abiding interest in history, tradition, and the integrity of the music. These traits help to make THE LAST CONCERT a suitably impressive exhibition by one of jazz`s finest small ensembles. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Complete Modern Jazz Quartet Prestige & Pablo Recordings
$41.98 In typical Fantasy Records aplomb, this four-CD set collects the eight albums which the Modern Jazz Quartet either mentored or collaborated on during their tenure at the commencement and nadir of their reign as jazz's premier chamber ensemble. Beginning with the 1952 issue of Modern Jazz Quartet/Milt Jackson Quintet recording (the earlier Milt Jackson Quartet sides are not here for obvious reasons, as the band did not commence its fully developed form on them) featuring original drummer Kenny Clarke before Connie Kay replaced him, and ending with This One's For Basie in 1985; the association the MJQ had with Prestige was a monumental one. Signified on the band's first full-length outing included here, Django, were the quiet power and majesty the group would later showcase on its Atlantic recordings, MJQ, Fontessa, and the soundtrack for No Sun In Venice. More importantly, the band's run on Prestige showcased not only the roots of the chamber jazz sound, but a harder-edged swing than was displayed on the more expansive recordings on Atlantic. From the almost novel and humorous asides of "The Queen's Fancy," to the funkier, grittier side of the band displayed with Sonny Rollins as a guest on "No Moe," MJQ were always about swing and blues. Discs One and Two showcase the early days of the band on their debut, Django, with Sonny Rollins and Concorde recordings. Concorde is a pinnacle, and reveals John Lewis' writing and arranging to have opened up and embraced all of classical music's dynamic spectrum, while keeping the restraint of swing and the expressionism of the blues in full view. The more regal sound is the one that informed virtually all of the group's Atlantic sides in the years to come. But Concorde and Django are simply two of the first recordings that the label issued during the early 1950s. Discs Three and Four represent four Pablo albums: The Reunion at Budokan in 1981, Together Again at Montreux Jazz in 1982, Echoes from 1984, and finally, This One's For Basie. These sides offer a much more mannered and ritualistic side of MJQ, one that had its critics but nonetheless swung hard and took chances, particularly in their live encounters. There is a caveat, however, as has become typical of the Fantasy boxed sets: Perhaps they should be titled the complete "released" recordings, since there is only one unreleased track in the bunch, the deep sixed 16th alternate take of "Rockin' In Rhythm," from Topsy: This One's For Basie. Really, what is the label waiting for? Fans, no doubt, have most if not all of this material anyway, and there needs to be -- besides an excellent package, sets of liner notes by Eugene Holley and Chris Sheridan -- a definitive edition that includes the process-takes this band recorded to get to the final version: MJQ were nothing if not perfectionists. Still, it's a somewhat small complaint to have all of this material in one place and juxtaposed so brilliantly between the young jazz rebels and the celebrated masters. |

$10.98 Modern Jazz Quartet: Milt Jackson (vibraphone); John Lewis (piano); Percy Heath (bass); Connie Kay (drums).Additional personnel includes: Gunther Schuller (conductor); Jimmy Giuffre (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Jim Hall (guitar); Ralph Pena (bass).Originally released on Atlantic.Personnel: Jim Hall (guitar); Betty Glamann (harp); Gerald Tarack (violin); Joe Tekula (cello); Jimmy Giuffre (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Bill McColl (clarinet); Manuel Zegler (bassoon); Paul Ingraham (French horn); John Richard Lewis (piano); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Connie Kay (drums).Liner Note Authors: John Wilson ; Max Harrison.Recording information: 08/23/1957-01/15/1960.This Atlantic release has some unusual performances by the Modern Jazz Quartet. Two selections ("Da Capo" and "Fine") combine the MJQ, which is comprised of vibraphonist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay, with the Jimmy Giuffre 3 (Giuffre on clarinet and tenor, with guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Ralph Pena) on "Exposure"; six chamber classical musicians add color, and a pair of other numbers ("Conversation" and the very successful "Sketch") match the MJQ with the Beaux Arts String Quartet. There is plenty of thought-provoking music on this disc even if the idea of creating a third stream between jazz and classical music never came to pass. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Track 12 recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 16, 1993.As part of their 40th anniversary, the Modern Jazz Quartet welcomed ten guest artists to their Celebration CD: Bobby McFerrin (brilliant on "Billie`s Bounce"), Take 6, Phil Woods, Wynton Marsalis (who gets to show off his technique on "Cherokee"), Illinois Jacquet, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Branford Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Freddie Hubbard and Nino Tempo. As usual, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and pianist John Lewis also have plenty of solo space, and bassist Percy Heath is perfect in support. Since drummer Connie Kay was ailing in 1992 (but back in action the following year), Mickey Roker fills in on seven of the 13 selections. With the exception of "Django" (which features Phil Woods), and "Bags` Groove," the music sticks to bop standards rather than MJQ standbys. It`s an enjoyable and varied set. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Modern Jazz Quartet at the Music Inn, Vol. 2
$12.97 The second volume of the Modern Jazz Quartet at the Music Inn was released in 1959, a year after its historic first volume with guest Jimmy Giuffre. The format on this set is similar, with pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Connie Kay moving through a gorgeous medley of standards to open including "Stardust," "I Can't Get Started," and "Lover Man," with beautiful and clever counterpoint between Lewis and Jackson on the melody lines. There are two of Lewis' originals here as well. The first is the wry, spare "Midsömmer" that begins atmospherically, with sparse lines played by Jackson that reverberate as Heath's bowed bass underscores them. When Lewis enters, the melody unfolds tenderly and thoughtfully. It's a ballad of tension and textures. Lewis' penchant for classical architecture permeates the tune, though it swings gently as well, with Kay's brushed cymbals and gracefully caressed hi hat. "Festival "Sketch," at a little over three-and-a-half minutes, takes a counterpoint melody and generates a skittering swing tune out of it. As on the previous volume, the Modern Jazz Quartet are joined by a guest for the final two cuts; ace saxophonist Sonny Rollins digs in on both the classic "Bags Groove," composed by Jackson, and Dizzy Gillespie's bebop anthem "Night in Tunisia." Both tunes are rooted in blues grooves. Rollins understands the MJQ's use of tension and dynamics beautifully. His big, warm tone above Lewis and Jackson on the former is sweet, relaxed, and in-the-pocket. On the latter, the knotty melodic frame is played a little slower, but is a tough fingerpopper nonetheless, with Rollins playing accents in the opening vamps and the just gliding into his big bluesy solo. This is a welcome addition to volume one, and a larger study in contrasts given Rollins propensity to really blow, as opposed Giuffre's lower key approach on the first volume. To say that this set works is an understatement. It is a highlight of the group's storied career on Atlantic. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music GuidePerformers: Milt Jackson - Vibraphone; Percy Heath - Bass; Connie Kay - Drums; John Richard Lewis - Piano; Sonny Rollins - Sax (Tenor) |
