What an alliance: a legendary bandleader and composer, a pioneering bop drummer, and an unclassifiable (and often prickly) bass behemoth. It's no wonder that the tension between Duke Ellington, Max Roach, and Charlie Mingus is thick and extremely tangible, permeating this breathtaking 1962 album with passion and aggression. On the jagged blues "Very Special," Ellington establishes a weighty mood w...

Liner Note Author: Alan Bates.Recording information: Nola Penthouse Studios, New York City (08/31/1960-04/04/1961).The Max Roach volume in Candid`s compilation series features him in four different sessions between August of 1960 and April of 1961, recording historic works such as "Freedom Day," written with Oscar Brown, Jr. (Abbey Lincoln handles the vocals) and Kenny Dorham`s "Oh Yeah, Oh Yeah," with the great trumpet master himself and Benny Bailey swinging hard in the front line. There are a couple of sessions with Eric Dolphy that also feature Booker Little, Julian Priester, bassist Art Davis, Lincoln, Mal Waldron, and Coleman Hawkins ("When Malindy Sings" and "In the Red") as well as a session with Little, Priester, Walter Benson on tenor, and Peck Morrison on bass that feature Roach drumming with the great Jo Jones ("Cliff Walk"). Finally, there`s "A New Day" with Don Friedman on piano with all but Lincoln and Hawkins in the band. This is an excellent overview that sonically sounds a bit better than some of the other individual artist albums on Candid issued previously. ~ Thom Jurek Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Clifford Brown & Max Roach Clifford Brown & Max Roach
$18.98

According to the original 1955 liner notes to Clifford Brown and Max Roach, the announcement that Clifford Brown and Max Roach had begun recording and playing together sent shock waves throughout the jazz community and predictions ran rampant about how the two might shape bop to come. The last duo to really shape the music had begun over ten years earlier, with the relationship between Bird and Diz. This recording was early fruit from a tree that would only live as long as Clifford Brown was around to water it (1956, the year of his tragic auto accident). The result is by far some of the warmest and most sincere bebop performed and committed to tape. Brown's tone is undeniably and characteristically warm, and he keeps the heat on alongside Roach's lilting vamps and pummeling solos. What really keeps this record on the orange side of things (other than the decidedly orange cover) is the solo work of saxophonist Harold Land, who plays part Bird and part Benny Goodman. His tone is as delightful as it gets on the sultry "Deliah" and as bop-expressive as it gets on "The Blues Walk" and "Parisian Thoroughfare," where he and Brownie go head to head blowing expressive runs of sheer New York-style jazz. This collection of songs runs a nice gamut between boplicity and pleasant balladry. It represents bop at its best and is recommended for collectors and casual fans alike. [The 2000 Verve reissue includes alternate takes of "The Blues Walk," "Daahoud," and "Joy Spring."] ~ Sam Samuelson, All Music GuidePerformers: Clifford Brown - Trumpet; Harold Land - Sax (Tenor); George Morrow - Bass; Richie Powell - Piano; Max Roach - Drums, Drums (Snare)

In 1956 Sonny Rollins used the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet (of which he was a member) as his sidemen for this Prestige set. The high points of this particularly strong hard bop set include "Valse Hot" (an early jazz waltz), a rapid rendition of "I Feel a Song Coming On," and Rollins's classic "Pent-Up House." Trumpeter Brown (heard on one of his final sessions) is in excellent form, as is the strong rhythm section and the young tenor-leader himself. This excellent music is also included as part of Rollins's seven-CD box set for Prestige. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Ray Bryant - Piano; Kenny Dorham - Trumpet; George Morrow - Bass; Max Roach - Drums; Sonny Rollins - Sax (Tenor); Billy Wallace - Piano

Originally released as THE MAX ROACH 4 PLAYS CHARLIE PARKER on EmArcy (SR 80019) and as MAX ROACH + 4 & MORE on Mercury (Japan) (195J-39). Includes liner notes by Brian Priestly and original release liner notes by Dom Cerulli. All songs written by Charlie Parker except "Raoul" (Maxwell Lemuel "Max" Roach), "This Time The Dream`s On Me" (Harold Arlen/John Herndon "Johnny" Mercer), "Tune-Up" (Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson) and "Anthropology" (John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie/Charlie Parker).THE MAX ROACH 4 PLAYS CHARLIE PARKER includes four tracks from MAX ROACH + 4 & MORE.The music on this CD finds drummer Max Roach for the first time dropping the piano out of his quintet and performing with a pianoless quartet. With the departure of Sonny Rollins (who is replaced on three songs apiece by either Hank Mobley or George Coleman), Roach`s group (which also featured trumpeter Kenny Dorham and either George Morrow or Nelson Boyd on bass) was temporarily without any major innovators (outside of the leader). So it was perfectly fitting that Roach would look backwards and perform six of Charlie Parker`s compositions. Highlighted by "Yardbird Suite," "Confirmation" and "Ko Ko," this set is generally fine although the lack of a piano is really felt on some of this material. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. It`s a tribute to his own musical vision that his numerous solo recordings are just as worthy as his famous sessions. Roach`s first solo date for Riverside, 1958`s DEEDS, NOT WORDS, nevertheless finds the drumming doyen in grand company. Listening to the fleet-fingered musical dialogue between Roach and saxophonist George Coleman on "It`s You or No One," or the way trumpet demon Booker Little blows the roof off of "Jodie`s Cha-Cha," it`s immediately clear that a major part of Roach`s genius lies in surrounding himself with jazz giants who can bend notes, beats, and phrases to their desires in just as seamless a manner as the man on the skins. Their association in the 1950s marked a pivotal time in jazz history. This album gives credence to the assertion that Brown, even in his early 20s, was on the same level as his predecessors, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. Indeed, it could be argued that Davis--despite his conceptual genius and wholly original tone--was never as technically proficient as Brown.Roach too is in top form here, displaying both superlative chops and a keen melodic sense. This CD`s highlights are difficult to pinpoint, since all eight tracks burn with equal fire. Perhaps Brown`s spotlight on the ballad "I Can`t Get Started" steals the show; but then again, Roach`s immensely creative solo on "Parisian Thoroughfare" makes a compelling case for the drummer. At a time when much of the jazz audience was looking toward the sounds of cool jazz, Brown and Roach reminded everyone that there was still plenty of life left in bebop. Roach`s exploratory, colorful, masterfully swinging approach proves to be the perfect companion to Brown`s dexterous, inventive trumpet work. The darting piano fills of Richie Powell and the vivid, fulsome sax lines of Harold Land fill out the picture, and the whole group matches a searching spirit with a lovingly bluesy warmth every step of the way. Roach`s musical dream team band features several innovative players, such as the legendary reedman Eric Dolphy and the extraordinary young trumpeter Booker Little, both of whom died untimely deaths in the early `60s. Roach and bassist Art Davis redefine the jazz beat in their own image, a truly unique rhythm section, and their 7-beat swing on "Man From South Africa" inspires some of the best playing on the session--as vivid and modern sounding today as it was 30 years ago. Personnel: Abdullah Ibrahim (piano); Max Roach (drums).Personnel: Max Roach (drums); Abdullah Ibrahim (piano); Max Roach; Abdullah Ibrahim.Liner Note Authors: Max Roach; Phil Schaap.Recording information: National Studio, New York, NY (09/20/1977).Abdullah Ibrahim and Max Roach entered the studio in 1977 with no preplanning of any kind, producing a powerful session of duo improvisation, Streams of Consciousness. Their long opener, the title track, is never dull, even at 21 minutes. Roach provides unaccompanied segues as Ibrahim repeatedly ducks out and returns with one after another powerful theme (each one complemented beautifully by the drummer), which touch on African chants, gospel-like themes, along with a bit of avant-garde. "Acclamation" has the feeling of being composed, building to a feverish pitch before ending quietly with Roach`s unaccompanied cymbals. Roach is initially at the forefront of "Consanguinity," with Ibrahim inserting brief, choppy chords, though the pianist takes on a much greater role as it progresses, finishing with a wave of tremolo chords. Sadly, they have yet to record together in the decades following this making of this remarkable recording. Originally issued by the Japanese label Baystate, it was rather hard to find until Piadrum reissued this valuable session on CD in 2003. ~ Ken Dryden Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Little contributed three now-obscure originals and also plays two standards and an early version of Miles Davis' "Milestones." The remainder of the CD has lengthy versions of "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" and "Blue 'n Boogie" from a jam session that matched Little with fellow Memphis-based players including Coleman, altoist Frank Strozier, and the masterful pianist Phineas Newborn. Overall, this forward-looking hard bop set is easily recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: George Coleman - Sax (Tenor); Charles Crosby - Drums; Art Davis - Bass; Tommy Flanagan - Piano; Roy Haynes - Drums; George Joyner - Bass; Wynton Kelly - Piano; Scott LaFaro - Bass; Booker Little - Trumpet; Calvin Newborn - Guitar; Phineas Newborn, Jr. - Piano; Max Roach - Drums; Louis Smith - Trumpet; Frank Strozier - Sax (Alto)

Personnel: Clifford Brown (trumpet); Max Roach (drums); Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Richie Powell (piano); George Morrow (bass).Producer: Bob Shad.Recorded in New York, New York on January 4 and February 16, 1956.Personnel: Clifford Brown (trumpet); Max Roach (drums); Harold Land (tenor saxophone); Richie Powell (piano); George Morrow (bass).Recorded on August 2, 3, 6 & 10, 1954.BROWN & ROACH INC. is a specially imported, limited-edition reissue with 3 bonus tracks. All tracks have been digitally remastered (24-bit).Recorded mere months before Clifford Brown died in a car crash, 1956`s AT BASIN STREET finds the revered trumpeter in top form, co-leading an ensemble with drummer Max Roach that included saxophonist Sonny Rollins and pianist Richie Powell (who was also killed in the accident). Morbid associations aside, this record is a vibrant hard-bop outing with Brown`s amazingly agile horn lines always commanding attention even when compared to Rollins`s robust sax work. Standout tracks include a swift, swinging rendition of "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing" and the bright, uplifting take on "I`ll Remember April."When Clifford Brown and Max Roach passed through Chicago in the latter part of 1955, a pregnant Mrs. Harold Land wired her husband to come back home to Los Angeles; so Sonny Rollins filled the tenor chair. The rest would have been history, except that Clifford Brown and pianist Richie Powell perished in an auto accident the following summer. But AT BASIN STREET remains, marking Rollins` debut and documenting the emergence of the decade`s most innovative small combo and three of its greatest solo voices.Still, much of this band`s enduring grace emanates from the charts and accompaniments of their underrated pianist, Richie Powell--Bud Powell`s kid brother. He transforms a sappy popular standard such as "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" through the use of multiple meters, rhythm changes and radical harmonic plumbing, while the witty intro to his own "Gertrude`s Bounce" parodies "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" before breaking into a spirited bebop line. Elsewhere, his punctilious phrasing is a studied contrast to the Olympian effusions of Brown, Roach and Rollins, and his varied vamps and shifting backgrounds give each piece big-band depth. And what monumental soloing: "I`ll Remember April," a standout on an album of classics, begins with Roach, Powell and bassist George Morrow in a sprightly Afro-Cuban vamp, before Brownie`s glorious rendition of the head and Rollins` cunning reprise of the bridge. Brownie`s crackling lyric variations over Roach`s swift, brushfire beat are brimming with harmonic and rhythmic intricacies, while Rollins plays cat and mouse with the changes, creating tremendous tension. And Roach follows Powell`s wonderful harmonic contrasts with a study in rhythmic architecture, before ushering Brownie and Rollins back in for some epic out choruses.Given

Gleason.Recording information: Jazz Workshop, San Francisco, CA (10/27/1962).Unknown Contributor Roles: Clifford Jordan; Eddie Khan; Mal Waldron.A crusader for civil rights, Max Roach was both lauded and highly criticized for his outspokenness. Certainly, this album reflects the personality of the master drummer in the political overtones of its title. However, Roach plays a set of music here that belies the notion that his `60s output had merely become another outlet for his political agenda. As he and his band "speak," they do so gently, with great control, elegance, and wit.Of the two compositions heard here, the title track is an evolving 25-minute hard bop chart that winds its way into Roach`s classic "The Drum Also Waltzes," a solo drum set piece. The second song, "A Variation," begins rubato but gradually morphs into a straight up swing tune. Filled with many creative solos by Roach, Clifford Jordan (tenor sax), and Mal Waldron (piano), SPEAK, BROTHER, SPEAK! is superb jazz. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Max Roach - Quiet As It`s Kept [6/9] Max Roach - Quiet As It`s Kept [6/9]
$10.98

Personnel: Max Roach (drums); Tommy Turrentine (trumpet); Julian Priester (trombone); Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone); Bob Boswell (bass).Recorded at Capitol Studios, NYC, July 21, 1959.This is an interesting 1959 date with Max Roach leading a piano-less quintet. The airy voicings for the horns, which include the Turrentine brothers (Tommy on trumpet and Stanley, of course, on tenor saxophone) and Julian Priester on trombone, approach a West Coast cool jazz-like texture, the kind of jazz abstractions which have worn very well over the years. "To Lady" is the most formally pleasing of these charts but the group gets to stretch out in hard bop style on "Lotus Blossom." All in all, an intriguing session before Roach committed himself to the even more politically oriented aesthetic in his later music. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. $11.98

Personnel: Max Roach (drums); Abbey Lincoln (vocals); Coleman Hawkins, Walter Benton (tenor saxophone); Booker Little (trumpet); Julian Priester (trombone); James Schenck (acoustic bass); Michael Olatunji (congas); Tomas Duvall, Ray Mantilla (percussion).WE INSIST! MAX ROACH`S FREEDOM NOW SUITE, co-authored by Max Roach and Oscar Brown, Jr., was a pivotal work in the early-`60s African-American protest movement. Vocalist Abbey Lincoln expresses this oppression as effectively as anyone could with her wordless vocals and interpretations of Brown, Jr`s lyrics. Roach assembled one of his greatest bands, from his own emerging ensemble with trombonist Julian Priester and trumpeter Booker Little, to the legendary Coleman Hawkins and lesser-known, underappreciated tenor saxophonist Walter Benton. Percussionists Ray Mantilla and Michael Olatunji gave the poetic pieces sung by Lincoln enough substance and spice, referring to Afro-Cuban and South American slavery as well. Hawkins is particularly impressive, as his emotional range during the deep and dour, 5/4 slave song "Driva` Man" clearly feeds off of Lincoln`s blues singing about quittin` time. "Triptych; Prayer/Peace/Protest" is the magnum opus of the set, introduced by Roach`s signature drum moves, an eerie operatic vocal by Lincoln, and a 5/4 beat from the percussionist against a calmer vocal component, all written for interpretive dance. This is a pivotal work in the discography of Roach and African-American music in general. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
Max Roach 4 Plays Charlie Parker Max Roach 4 Plays Charlie Parker
$14.98

The music on this CD finds drummer Max Roach for the first time dropping the piano out of his quintet and performing with a pianoless quartet. With the departure of Sonny Rollins (who is replaced on three songs apiece by either Hank Mobley or George Coleman), Roach's group (which also featured trumpeter Kenny Dorham and either George Morrow or Nelson Boyd on bass) was temporarily without any major innovators (outside of the leader). So it was perfectly fitting that Roach would look backwards and perform six of Charlie Parker's compositions. Highlighted by "Yardbird Suite," "Confirmation" and "Ko Ko," this set is generally fine although the lack of a piano is really felt on some of this material. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Nelson Boyd - Bass; George Coleman - Sax (Tenor); Kenny Dorham - Trumpet; Hank Mobley - Sax (Tenor); George Morrow - Bass; Max Roach - Drums

Personnel: Max Roach (drums); Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Kenny Dorham (trumpet); Ray Bryant, Billy Wallace (piano); George Morrow (bass instrument). The waltz is not a rhythm that traditionally swings or grooves. On JAZZ IN 3/4 TIME, however, drummer/bandleader Max Roach changes all that. The program features six numbers in waltz time, including two originals by Roach, one by Sonny Rollins (who plays tenor saxophone here), and three standards written in 3/4: Oakland & Hammerstein II`s "I`ll Take Romance," and Rodgers & Hart`s "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" and "Lover." Though there is a taste of the stately to-and-fro associated with the meter (especially on the intro to Rollins`s "Valse Hot"), Roach and company make the form cook.Interestingly, Roach lays back in the cut, resisting the rhythmic pyrotechnics that established him as the defining drummer of modern jazz. Still, he gently pushes at the boundaries of each measure, making the 3/4 time seem natural, and, with crack rhythm section George Morrow (bass) and Billy Wallace (piano), he provides an expansive backdrop for the horns. Rollins is in superb form here, as is trumpeter Kenny Dorham, whose clean, logical lines nicely offset Rollins`s athleticism. This intriguing experiment makes for a thoroughly enjoyable set. Personnel: Charles Mingus (bass); George Barrow (tenor saxophone); Eddie Bert (trombone); Mal Waldron (piano); Willie Jones, Max Roach (drums).Recorded live at the Cafe Bohemia, New York, New York on December 23, 1955. Originally released on Fantasy (6009). Includes liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason.Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). The mid-`50s was a transitional period for Mingus` music. Still working within fairly conventional song structures, he began to experiment with various harmonic and rhythmic augmentations of the pieces in his repertoire, like a sculptor changing the shapes of familiar objects until, while still identifiable, they begin to take on a new identity. Here he directs his quintet through evocative, atmospheric embellishments (trombonist Eddie Bert`s sustained notes sound like a fog horn on "A Foggy Day"), shifts in tone and dynamic (the jarring changes in "Lady Bird") and the pulsing, contrapuntal lines of "Love Chant," while maintaining strong links to traditional form and melody.Master skinsman Max Roach appears on two tracks here, "I`ll Remember April," and the floating dialogue between drums and bass in "Drums." The members of the Quintet play solidly throughout (though Roach`s spot in "I`ll Remember April" steals the show). The music (recorded live at a club date in New York City, 1955) is skilful, intriguing and accessible: a cross-section of Mingus` earliest concentrations and the exploratory direction he would take in the late `50s/ early `60s. Instead, listeners get the highlights of Max Roach`s varied quintets after the death of Brown in 1956. Of course, Roach`s late-`50s sessions feature many great recordings -- trumpeter Booker Little is a competent replacement for Brown, and tenors Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, and Stanley Turrentine all have great spots -- but record buyers expecting this set to live up to its title will be disappointed. Despite that, however, this is an OK overview of the Max Roach side of the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet. ~ John Bush Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Personnel: Clifford Brown (trumpet); Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Richie Powell (piano); George Morrow (bass instrument); Max Roach (drums). This Essential Jazz Records collection brings together all the master studio takes that Sonny Rollins recorded as part of the celebrated Max Roach-Clifford Brown Quintet in 1956, some months before Brownie`s death in a car crash in June of that year. (Both pianist Richie Powell, brother of Bud, and Powell`s wife also perished in the tragic accident.) Actually, Harold Land was the regular saxophonist for the group before Rollins substituted on a gig one evening. Sonny ultimately recorded a few albums` worth of material with the Quintet, which has appeared on AT BASIN STREET and MORE STUDIES IN BROWN on Emarcy, and on SONNY ROLLINS PLUS 4 on Prestige. The saxophonist was just emerging as an individual voice at this time, but he was more than ready to trade fours with Brown, simply one of the greatest musicians that jazz has produced, as well as Max Roach, who would go on to contribute significantly to Rollin`s masterpiece, SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS in 1957. "Money Jungle" is a thunderous opener, a blues that might be classified somewhere between post-bop and avant-garde. The gem of the date is the fragile, somewhat haunting ballad "Fleurette Africaine," where Mingus` floating bassline and Roach`s understated drumming add to the mystique of an Ellington work that has slowly been gathering steam among jazz musicians as a piece worth exploring more often. "Very Special" is a jaunty upbeat blues, while the angular, descending line of "Wig Wise" also proves to be quite catchy. Ellington also revisits "Warm Valley" (a lovely ballad indelibly associated with Johnny Hodges) and an almost meditative "Solitude." Thunderous percussion and wild basslines complement a wilder-than-usual approach to "Caravan." The 1987 CD reissue added five previously unreleased works written for the session and an alternate of "Solitude"; this 2002 edition adds two new alternate takes. Mingus briefly sings along with his opening bass solo to Ellington`s sauntering blues "Switch Blade," while Roach`s brushwork seasons the leader`s down-and-dirty "Rem Blues." Reissue producer Michael Cuscuna adds a brief false start to "Backward Country Boy Blues" to share a complement that Ellington gave to Mingus after hearing his opening bass solo. Even if you already own the earlier, nearly complete CD, it is well worth investing in this expanded 24-bit version, but don`t be surprised if i
