Art Tatum - The Definitive Art Tatum
$11.98 Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Everett Barksdale (guitar); Slam Stewart (bass).Producers: F.M. Scott III, Ray Heindorf.Compilation producers: Dan Morgenstern, Mantis Evar, Bryan Koniarz.Recorded between August 1934 & December 1952. Includes liner notes by Arnold Laubich. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Blue Note Records "The Definitive" series.Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Everett Barksdale (guitar).Liner Note Author: Arnold Laubich.Recording information: Beverly Hills, CA (08/24/1934-12/20/1952); Los Angeles, CA (08/24/1934-12/20/1952); New York, NY (08/24/1934-12/20/1952).This sampler has 16 Art Tatum recordings reissued in chronological order that date from 1934-1950. All but the closing "Indiana" (which has guitarist Everett Barksdale and bassist Slam Stewart) are unaccompanied piano solos, and they are drawn from the Decca, Capitol, and Verve catalogs. Tatum was always a remarkable virtuoso so, even if this set is not completely definitive (it could not be without having Tatum`s 1933 recording of "Tiger Rag"), there are many gems here. Tatum is typically miraculous on such songs as "The Shout," "Get Happy," "Blue Skies," and "Yesterdays." ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Art Tatum - Best Of Art Tatum
$10.98 Personnel includes: Art Tatum, Louis Bellson, Red Callender, Benny Carter, Buddy DeFranco, Roy Eldridge, Lionel Hampton, Jo Jones, Buddy Rich, Ben Webster. It is generally agreed that Art Tatum was the greatest jazz virtuoso of them all. Legally blind in one eye and seriously impaired in the other, Tatum learned to read music by Braille. His genius was recorded during the `30s, when swing was the dominant music of choice. He incorporated ragtime, blues, swing, boogie-woogie, and classical influences to form his unique style. His virtuosic performances quickly became legendary and were even attended by the great classical pianist Vladimir Horowitz. This recording is from Tatum`s massive Pablo output (eight solo recordings and eight group recordings) made between 1953-55. The group recordings ultimately were less effective, as Tatum proved to be almost impossible to compliment; however, all are highly recommended. The selections here from the 16 sessions are a fine representation, but it is highly recommended that this just be the starting point. ~ Robert Taylor Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Art Tatum - Ultimate Art Tatum
$10.98 Tracks selected by Hank Jones.Solo performer: Art Tatum (piano).Producer: Ray Heindorf.Compilation producer: Richard Seidel.Recorded on April 16, 1950 and July 3, 1955 in Beverly Hills, California. Includes liner notes by Hank Jones and Bob Blumenthal. This is part of the Verve Ultimate Series.Recording information: Beverly Hills, CA (04/16/1950/07/03/1955).Verve`s Ultimate Art Tatum may not live up to its billing, but the budget-priced collection is nevertheless a terrific introductory sampler. Hank Jones selected the 16 tracks on the compilation and he also wrote the liner notes. He did an excellent job balancing acknowledged classics with choices that illustrate Tatum`s range. Some listeners will undoubtedly find a favorite or two missing, but these 16 tracks -- including "Tenderly," "I Cover the Waterfront," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Yesterdays," "Willow Weep for Me," "Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams (And Dream Your Troubles Away)," "Sweet Lorraine," "There Will Never Be Another You," and "Too Marvelous for Words" -- capture the essence of Tatum`s Verve recordings, which is enough to make this a worthwhile sampler. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Tatum is heard unaccompanied and with small combos on this 19-song budget sampler. While it would be inconceivable to compile a single disc of Tatum`s contribution to jazz, this collection is satisfying, especially for anyone new to the extraordinary pianist. ~ Al Campbell Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Art Tatum - The Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 2
$10.98 Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Roy Eldridge (trumpet); John Simmons (bass); Alvin Stoller (drums).Recorded in Los Angeles, California in March 1955. Includes original release liner notes by Benny Green. The second of eight CDs teaming the amazing pianist with a variety of his contemporaries finds Tatum sharing the stage with trumpeter Roy Eldridge, bassist John Simmons and drummer Alvin Stoller. Eldridge, normally a very combative player, knows better than to directly challenge Tatum and instead is surprisingly restrained and muted on this enjoyable set of swing standards. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. |
Storyville Art Tatum
$14.98 Featuring 29 solo piano performances by Art Tatum recorded between 1932 and 1953, this Storyville Records set shows that Tatum's astounding skills never truly diminished. Put simply, he was the greatest solo pianist in the history of jazz, and it is unimaginable that anyone will ever surpass him. What's here is somewhat of a mixed bag, with several live radio performances ("Where or When," "Chinatown, My Chinatown," "Lulu's Back in Town"), live recordings from the Embers in New York ("Don't Blame Me," "Memories of You"), and a pair of rare recordings from a 1949 set in a Toronto club ("The Continental," Chopin's Waltz in C sharp minor, Op. 64/2). There are also two versions of Tatum playing his signature "Tiger Rag" here, as well as a breezy version of "Devil in the Moon." Anything Tatum attempted on the piano became transformed, and even standard pieces like "Willow Weep for Me" become exhilarating, careening pieces in Tatum's hands. Sonic qualities vary from track to track here, and this probably isn't the ideal introduction to Tatum, but his singular abilities made each and every time he sat down at the piano worth hearing. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide |

Art Tatum - The Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 7
$10.98 Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Buddy DeFranco (clarinet); Red Callender (bass); Bill Douglass (drums).Recorded in Los Angeles, California on February 6, 1956. Includes original release liner notes by Benny Green. The seventh of eight CDs in this valuable series matches the remarkable pianist in a quartet with clarinetist Buddy DeFranco. DeFranco, no slouch himself, directly challenges Tatum and their uptempo romps are often quite wondrous. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Art Tatum - The Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 8
$10.98 Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Red Callender (bass); Bill Douglass (drums).Recorded in Los Angeles, California on September 11, 1956. Includes original release liner notes by Benny Green.Personnel: Art Tatum (piano), Lionel Hampton (vibes), Buddy Rich (drums).Recorded in Los Angeles on August 1, 1955. Includes liner notes by Benny Green. This CD has the same tracks as THE TATUM GROUP MASTERPIECES, VOL. 3 (Pablo 2405-426), except for "Hallelujah" - (alternate take) which is only on the other CD.Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Red Callender (bass); Bill Douglass (drums).Recorded in Los Angeles, California on September 11, 1956. Includes liner notes by Benny Green.Digitally remastered by JVC using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) technology. The final volume in this very worthy series is a comparatively relaxed affair, a quartet set with tenor-saxophonist Ben Webster. Webster lets Tatum fill the background with an infinite number of notes while emphasizing his warm tenor tone in the forefront on a variety of melodic ballads and standards. The combination works very well. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Art Tatum - Art Tatum Solo Masterpieces, Vol. 1
$10.98 Solo performer: Art Tatum (piano).Recorded at Radio Recorders, Hollywood, California between 1953 & 1955. Includes original release liner notes by Benny Green. When looking up the word "pianistic" in the dictionary, there should be a picture of Art Tatum. A master of jazz piano, Tatum possessed chops that bewilder top pianists generations later; he is simply unmatched when it comes to playing with fullness and articulation. On the downside, Tatum`s playing could be criticized as hyperactive, especially in a trio or quartet setting. Although Tatum`s approach is indisputably relentless, it is also genius.Tatum is best heard in a solo setting, since this environment allows him the freedom to go in any direction. Therefore, SOLO MASTERPIECES, VOL. 1. is a great record of Tatum`s abilities. Each and every tune is played with true mastery, and he tears through all 16 tracks like a whirling saw. Tatum`s version of "Have You Met Miss Jones" is quite endearing, as is his stately take on of "You Took Advantage of Me." However, the best piece may be his spirited and angular rendition of "Just A-Sittin` and A-Rockin`." Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Art Tatum: The Art of Jazz Piano
$12.71 As the most brilliant jazz pianist who ever lived, hands-down (by any standard), Art Tatum (1909-1956) lifted the genre to a new plateau - playing at speeds literally undreamt of, segueing effortlessly between swing, stride and boogie-woogie, and lapsing into the most fantastic melodic variations and inventions that anyone had heard up through that time. For various reasons, biographical documentaries on Tatum have been surprisingly scant, but Art Tatum: The Art of Jazz Piano marks one of the few exceptions. The program relays the high points of the pianist's life and times, discusses his litany of musical accomplishments and his reinvention of jazz as a form, and draws on interviews with giants including Marian McPartland, Les Paul and Dick Hyman. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide |

Art Tatum [Storyville]
$89.98 Art Tatum was heralded as being among the very best jazz pianists for much of his career, though his rapid-fire runs at the keyboard intimidated all but the very best musicians to some degree. As a result, there were long stretches when he wasn't recorded all that much, until Norman Granz hired him for marathon solo and small group dates during the last few years of the pianist's life. But collectors recognized the value in preserving many of his broadcast performances, radio transcriptions, and even a few private recordings made in clubs or private homes. This ten-CD boxed set includes over 675 minutes of music, including music from throughout almost the entire length of his career. While the sound quality isn't as good as commercial records made during the period, the audio restoration makes these selections very listenable. Tatum fans will seek out the solo tracks first, particularly the pianist's high-flying arrangements like "Yesterdays," "Taboo," and "Begin the Beguine." There are a number of trio tracks to choose from, though the best results come from his meeting with guitarist Les Paul, one of the few string players who could play on Tatum's level. Most of the music on the first nine CDs appeared on widely scattered and long unavailable LPs on various labels, though each of them was individually issued by Storyville. Almost all of the performances on disc ten make their commercial debut in this collection. Tatum's meeting with the young guitarist Tal Farlow is superb with excellent audio, while the club meeting with organist Joe Mooney shows the pianist in a more relaxed mood in "Moonglow," though the fireworks come out in the furious "Three Little Words," where he overshadows Mooney. Two after-hours performances from 1941 feature bassist Chocolate Williams, while vocalist Ann Robinson adds a bluesy vocal in "Stardust" and the overdramatic Ethel White takes her place for "Embraceable You." If Tatum fans who own the previous nine individual Storyville CDs from this collection think that this new material is not enough to make this boxed set worthy of purchasing, then the bonus DVD, with rare film and video footage of the pianist, should change their minds. There is a series of excerpts made for the March of Times movie newsreels (one master and several outtakes of "Tiny's Exercise," a brief theme used as a set closer), two performances from the film The Fabulous Dorseys, plus a show-stopping miniature of "Yesterdays" that came from The Spike Jones Show. The detailed liner notes and numerous photos add to the value of this essential collection of rare Art Tatum. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music GuidePerformers: Ned Ciashine - Accordion; Jack Gilford - Voices; |

Art Tatum - Piano Starts Here
$6.99 Solo performer: Art Tatum (piano).Includes original release liner notes by Leonard Feather & new liner notes by Chip Stern. There are many Art Tatum records available, but this is the one to pull out to amaze friends, particularly with Tatum`s wondrous version of "Tiger Rag," during which he sounds like three pianists jamming together. This CD consists of Tatum`s first studio session as a leader (which resulted in "Tea for Two," "St. Louis Blues," "Tiger Rag," and "Sophisticated Lady") and a remarkable solo concert performance from the spring of 1949. While "Tiger Rag" dwarfs everything else, the live set is highlighted by a very adventurous, yet seemingly effortless exploration of "Yesterdays," a ridiculously rapid "I Know That You Know," and the hard-cooking "Tatum Pole Boogie." This is an essential set of miraculous music that cannot be praised highly enough. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Tatum was the primary influence on nearly every major jazz pianist, including McCoy Tyner, Oscar Peterson and Dave Brubeck. His Capitol recordings, mostly solo works performed in 1949 plus a few trio numbers cut in `52, amply demonstrate the sensitivity and sophistication that were his trademarks. The tunes he recorded for Capitol were mostly ballads, which he redefined through his innovative harmonic sensibilities and his assured-but-fluid rhythms . Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. The Art Tatum Trio and Sidney Bechet
$14.98 This compilation features two unrelated studio sessions: a 1939 Afro-Cuban-flavored date by Sidney Bechet, as well as both piano solos and trio numbers by Art Tatum from 1944. The Tatum material was originally recorded for Asch, featuring six solos, including "Fine and Dandy" and "Danny Boy," though none of them are as overpowering as the pianist's typical versions. Slam Stewart and Tiny Grimes are added for the last four numbers, including relative obscurities such as Tatum's "Boogie" and his only known recording of "Topsy" (aside from an alternate from the same session that appeared on an English LP). Rehearsals from this session, which aren't part of this release, were on the earlier Folkways LP issued in the 1970s. The unfortunate low recording level (from the initial recording) competes with the somewhat loud surface noise throughout this portion of the disc. The Bechet tracks, recorded originally for Varsity, have been reissued less frequently, though the sound quality is far better than the Tatum material. Bechet, who is heard on both soprano sax and clarinet, is accompanied by pianist Willie "The Lion" Smith, drummer Zutty Singleton, trumpeter Kenneth Roane, and bassist Olin Alderhold. The primary interaction is between Bechet's powerful soprano and Roane's more reserved trumpet, with the rhythm section relegated to a strictly supporting role. These compositions are presumably originals by Bechet, and although none is particularly memorable, the music contrasts with most of Bechet's work in this point in his career. Although the poor sound quality of the Tatum session keeps this release from being essential, the Bechet tracks more than make up for its shortcomings. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music GuidePerformers: Sidney Bechet - Clarinet, Sax (Soprano); Tiny Grimes - Guitar; Slam Stewart - Bass; Art Tatum - Piano |

Art Tatum - Centennial Celebration [10/6]
$10.98 Personnel: Art Tatum (piano).Liner Note Author: Ashley Kahn. While no single-disc collection of Art Tatum could ever do justice or completely cover his legendary career, Pablo Records issues this 12-track CD from the legendary Norman Granz-produced recordings to let you know something of what the pianist was doing between 1953 to 1956. Culled from the exhaustive Group and Solo Masterpieces series recorded in Los Angeles and Hollywood, CA, you hear the ever brilliant Tatum playing by himself with no need for accompaniment, or inside a rhythm section backing select soloists. The music always shows Tatum is on fire, displaying his unequaled speedy technique, embellishing everything with no holds barred. As a solo artist, you hear his unfettered and alive style thoroughly duking it out with whatever standard he chooses to annihilate. His arpeggiated take of "Moonglow," the hyper-fast then cool-into-stride, schizoid version of "Tea for Two," the Fats Waller-like, witty and fun but not so showy and more chordal "It`s Only a Paper Moon," and a dynamic, modal, speedo read of "Yesterdays" are all beyond critical reproach. Of the group tracks, drummer Jo Jones and regular Tatum sideman bassist Red Callender scorch "Just One of Those Things," with the pianist just showing off his ability to rip up demonstrable, burning-hot sixteenth-note phrases at will. Tatum quotes "Old Folks at Home" in contrast alongside mellow trumpeter Roy Eldridge, who is in late on "In a Sentimental Mood," tones it down only marginally in tempo with tenor saxophonist Ben Webster for the classic ballad "Where or When" (mistitled on the back cover as "Where & When,") or jams with Benny Carter`s alto sax and Louie Bellson`s drumming in a bassless trio on the hopped-up swinger "A Foggy Day." Vibraphonist Lionel Hampton teams with Tatum and drummer Buddy Rich for a memorable bop adaptation of "How High the Moon," while a jam session including Rich, Hampton, Callender, Harry Edison, and Barney Kessel offers the most group activity, albeit well into the moderately paced "September Song." It`s Tatum running fast and loose alongside clarinetist Buddy DeFranco, who holds the lead during "This Can`t Be Love" with the pianist`s staunch rhythm team of the ever-so-great Callender and drummer Bill Douglas. A CD that celebrates the 100th anniversary of Art Tatum`s birth in Toledo, OH on October 13, 1909, this collection is better than most budget compilations, and can only whet your whistle toward the purchase of the complete Masterpieces sets, staples for any serious jazz fan. ~ Michael G. Featuring Tatum alone at the piano, producer Norman Granz intended these sessions as a spotlight for the artist, and as such, they deliver a portrait of the genius technician in the latter stage of his career. Although Tatum`s brilliant early work is the place to start listening to his unique style, the Pablo sessions are nonetheless essential listening for Tatum fanatics. Also, given the exhaustive nature of the original 120-track box set, this compilation is a welcome development. ~ Matt Collar Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Art Tatum - Album (+5 Bonus Tracks)
$12.12 Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Red Callender (bass instrument); Bill Douglass (drums). The great pianist Art Tatum was pretty much a solo act his entire career--his rich, ornate style rarely meshing with another soloist`s contributions. Which makes the 1956 recordings he did with tenor saxophonist Ben Webster at the end of his life (Tatum died a mere month after these sessions) all the more precious. On the face of it, Tatum`s fulsome, baroque approach and Webster`s blues-inflected, slurry lyricism would seem to be especially incompatible. The audible results definitely refute any such notion however. Like two master vaudevillians, the two swing veterans perform their musical turns expertly in tandem, with Webster`s breathy, conversational lines leaving plenty of room for Tatum`s filigrees and signature appergios. And there is absolutely no hint that the pianist was nearing his end. His piano tone is lush, his attack on point, and his inexhaustible harmonic invention raises this far above a typical jazz all-star session. The Essential Jazz Classics reissue adds five Tatum solo pieces to the original seven songs recorded with Webster. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Art Tatum - Piano Grand Master [Box]
$25.72 Includes a 44 page booklet.Largely self-taught, Art Tatum became one of the most accomplished pianists of the 20th century, and his polyrhythmic inventiveness on the instrument has seldom -- if ever -- been equaled. British record label Proper has assembled a budget-priced, four-disc box set spanning Tatum`s prime years, an impressive 90-plus tracks (and a detailed 44 page booklet) that showcase the speed and clarity of this amazing musician. Most of the tracks are Tatum playing solo, but highlights from a 1944 all-star jazz concert at the Esquire Metropolitan Opera House are also included, as well as cuts from the Art Tatum Trio, with Tiny Grimes on guitar and Slam Stewart on bass. Tatum is generally considered a stride pianist, but he was so much more, and dropping in anywhere on these four discs will reveal some jaw-dropping piano music. The Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 2
$11.98 The second of eight CDs teaming the amazing pianist with a variety of his contemporaries finds Tatum sharing the stage with trumpeter Roy Eldridge, bassist John Simmons and drummer Alvin Stoller. Eldridge, normally a very combative player, knows better than to directly challenge Tatum and instead is surprisingly restrained and muted on this enjoyable set of swing standards. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Roy Eldridge - Trumpet; John Simmons - Bass; Alvin Stoller - Drums; Art Tatum - Piano |

The Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 3
$11.98 The third of eight CDs matching the great pianist with a variety of classic jazzmen is the first of two that finds him in a trio with vibraphonist Lionel Hampton and drummer Buddy Rich; no weak spots in that group. Much of this music really burns. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Lionel Hampton - Vibraphone; Buddy Rich - Drums; Art Tatum - Piano |
|
The Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 7
$11.98 The seventh of eight CDs in this valuable series matches the remarkable pianist in a quartet with clarinetist Buddy DeFranco. DeFranco, no slouch himself, directly challenges Tatum and their uptempo romps are often quite wondrous. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Red Callender - Bass; Buddy DeFranco - Clarinet; Bill Douglass - Drums; Art Tatum - Piano |
|
The Tatum Group Masterpieces, Vol. 8
$11.98 The final volume in this very worthy series is a comparatively relaxed affair, a quartet set with tenor-saxophonist Ben Webster. Webster lets Tatum fill the background with an infinite number of notes while emphasizing his warm tenor tone in the forefront on a variety of melodic ballads and standards. The combination works very well. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Red Callender - Bass; Bill Doublass - Drums; Bill Douglass - Drums; Art Tatum - Piano; Ben Webster - Sax (Tenor) |

Art Tatum - Best Of The Pablo Group Masterpieces
$10.98 Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Roy Elridge, Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet); Buddy DeFranco (clarinet); Lionel Hampton (vibraphone); Barney Kessel (guitar); Red Callender, John Simmons (bass); Alvin Stoller, Bill Douglas, Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, Jo Jones (drums).Recorded at Radio Recorders and Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California between 1955 & 1956. Includes liner notes by Scott Yanow.Personnel: Art Tatum (piano); Barney Kessel (guitar); Buddy DeFranco (clarinet); Benny Carter (alto saxophone); Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Harry "Sweets" Edison, Roy Eldridge (trumpet); Lionel Hampton (vibraphone); Bill Douglass , Jo Jones , Louie Bellson, Alvin Stoller, Buddy Rich (drums).Audio Remasterer: Kirk Felton.Liner Note Author: Scott Yanow.Recording information: Capitol studios, Los Angeles, CA (06/25/1954-09/11/1956); Radio Recorders (06/25/1954-09/11/1956).Photographer: Phil Stern.A rich and rewarding core sample, selected from one of Norman Granz`s deepest gold mines. The full set of Tatum ensemble master takes was released on eight vinyl records in 1975, appearing with alternate takes as a box of seven compact discs in 1990. Since then, each separate session has been issued on a single, affordable CD. With the release of this best-of, the only remaining untried reissue format stratagem could almost be conducted according to the laws of chance. If someone were to divide up the existing 59 master takes (saving the alternate takes for a "Best of the Tatum Alternates" compilation), the entire body of work could be issued as a numbered best-of series, the titles carefully shuffled at random. But each volume would possibly still omit something that could be considered essential. This is the insoluble problem with anything calling itself a best-of. Fortunately, the Tatum group recordings produced by Norman Granz during the years 1954, 1955, and 1956 actually deserve the word "masterpieces." While Tatum himself is honored as one of the very most gifted and influential of all jazz musicians, without exception every musician who participated in these sessions was adept, inspired, and, in many cases, masterful. (There are those who would suggest that the Art Tatum/Ben Webster date could stand by itself as the best of the group masterpieces.) Here, for once, is a package worthy of its title. A bit of the best of some of the very best jazz ever recorded. ~ arwulf arwulf Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Art Tatum - 20th Century Piano Genius
$18.99 Solo performer: Art Tatum (piano).Recorded live at the home of Ray Heindorf in Beverly Hills, California between 1950 and 1955. Includes liner notes by James Lester, as well as excerpts from a conversation between Hank Jones, Adam Makowicz, and Lou Stein.20TH CENTURY PIANO GENIUS was previously released as two separate LPs, PIANO DISCOVERIES on 20th Century Fox (FTS 3029, 3033) and PIECES OF EIGHT on Smithsonian (R 029). It includes previously-unreleased material from those same sessions. There is virtually no pianist, living or dead, who has possessed same amount of technical facility as Art Tatum. The Franz List of jazz, Tatum was known for his ability to play jaw-dropping runs up and down the piano. In fact, his skill was so amazing that he often sounded like two or more pianists playing at once.On 20TH CENTURY PIANO GENIUS, the legendary pianist performs solo on all 39 tracks. Recorded informally in a Hollywood, California home, this disc highlights the perfectionism and sheer intensity of Tatum`s musicianship. Each selection is expertly played, and the din of glasses clanking and people chatting between tunes actually adds intimacy to the recording; this is not some pristine studio endeavor, it`s a listening party. Musical gems are found throughout, but the swinging "Love for Sale" and the stride-influenced "Body and Soul" are standout tracks. The CD package also contains insightful commentary on the brilliance of Tatum from pianists Hank Jones, Adam Makowicz, and Lou Stein. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Piano Starts Here: The Young Art Tatum
$7.4 Regardless of whether they've heard of jazz or Art Tatum, young readers will appreciate how Parker uses simple, lyrical storytelling and colorful and energetic ink-and-wash illustrations to show the world as young Art Tatum might have seen it. Tatum came from modest beginnings and was nearly blind, but his passion for the piano and his acute memory for any sound that he heard drove him to become a virtuoso who was revered by both classical and jazz pianists alike. Included in the back matter is a biography and bibliography.Art Tatum came from modest beginnings and was nearly blind, but his passion for the piano and his acute memory for any sound he heard drove him to become a virtuoso who was revered by classical and jazz pianists alike.Starred review, Kirkus Reviews, December 15, 2007:brFusing Parker's artistic talent and passion for jazz (he's a musician, too), this sensitively embellished biography is totally on time.brStarred review, Booklist, February 2, 2008:brThe simple, direct language shows the power of the music for both Tatum and his listeners.brStarred review, School Library Journal, February 2008:brBreathing life into words about music for young children is never easy, but Parker makes it appear effortless.brReview, The San Francisco Chronicle, February 24, 2008:brIt's a joyful portrait of an innovative artist who was peerless in music ... Too Marvelous for Words: The Life and Genius of Art Tatum
$14.94 Lester provides the first full-length biography of Art Tatum, the greatest virtuoso performer in the history of jazz.Art Tatum defined the limits of the possible in jazz piano. Gunther Schuller called Tatum's playing a marvel of perfection...His deep-in-the-keys full piano sonority, the tone and touch control in pyrotechnical passages...are miracles of performance. Whitney Balliett wrote no pianist has ever hit notes more beautifully. Each one - no matter how fast the tempo - was light and complete and resonant, like the letters on a finely printed page. His famous runs have been compared to the arc left against the night sky by a Fourth-of-July sparkler. And to have heard him play, one musician said, was as awe-inspiring as to have seen the Grand Canyon or Halley's Comet. Now, in Too Marvelous for Words, James Lester provides the first full-length biography of the greatest virtuoso performer in the history of jazz. Before this volume, little was known about Tatum, even among jazz afficionados. What were his origins, who taught him and who provided early pianistic influences, how did he break into the jazz field, what role did he play in the development of other jazz players, and what was he like when he wasn't playing? To answer these questions, Lester has conducted almost a hundred interviews for this book, with surviving family, childhood friends, schoolteachers, and the famous jazz musicians who played with him or knew him. Lester creates a memorable portrait of this unique musician and of the vibrant jazz world of the 1930s and 1940s, capturing the complexity and vitality of this remarkable performer. Tatum, who was virtually blind, suffering from 70 percent to 90 percent visual impairment, emerges as cheerful, fun-loving, energetic, and outgoing, with none of the demonicself-destructiveness that seemed to haunt such jazz greats as Charlie Parker or Billie Holiday. He was simply inexhaustible and had a lifelong habit of staying up all night after a gig, u@-áG®záÿ¾Úx |

Though he often performed solo, his virtuosity allowed him to make the transition from swing to bebop effortlessly. Tatum`s eclectic style also reflected influences from blues and classical music, and from early jazz and pop music of the time.Long considered a classic album, PIANO STARTS HERE was assembled from studio and live sources from 1933 and 1949, respectively.
