Steely Dan

Steely Dan?
Someone told me that members of Steely Dan is gay, is it true? Their texts would prove otherwise, but I was just wondering.
No, they are absolutely equal, and musical perfectionists.

Classic Albums: Steely Dan - Aja [VHS]
This profile of Steely Dan's elegant 1977 masterpiece, Aja, is a feast for Dan fans, a thoughtful, satisfyingly detailed assessment of the album and its bejeweled fusion of jazz, R&B, rock, and pop. Better yet, the documentary's producers elicit atypically straightforward, revealing interviews from the group's stealthy principals, songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, who jettison enough of... |

Steely Dan - Best of Steely Dan Then & Now
$18.96 There`s a reason why "remastered" is part of the title of Then and Now: The Best of Steely Dan Remastered. Steely Dan`s fans are notorious for their love of pristine audio quality; they loved virgin vinyl pressings of the Dan`s classic studio work and they loved the CD reissues. So the distinction that this 1993 collection is remastered is important, since it gives the hardcore a reason to check it out. Of course, in the years since, the remasters have been replaced by new remasters, most notably the Fagen and Becker-endorsed 1999 reissues, but this was still an improvement over the issues in the marketplace in 1993. More importantly, at least to the general audience, is that the compilation is a good overview of the band`s work. It doesn`t follow chronological order and there are omissions that are easy to spot, especially since it decides to balance singles with album tracks from "Midnite Cruiser" to "Josie." Still, this is a really entertaining sampling, heavy on their big hits yet still an accurate portrait of their breadth and depth. Nothing that the hardcore fan needs to add -- unless they don`t have "FM" somewhere in their collection or are a completist or an audiophile circa 1993 -- but casual fans will enjoy it (though it`s not much better than the easily available A Decade of Steely Dan, so it`s not necessarily worth an extensive search for this British collection). Best of all, the auto-Stonehenge makes for the coolest cover ever for a Dan compilation. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Their dreams were answered in 1993 when Steely Dan reunited for an extensive American tour. Though Steely Dan was best known for its studio alchemy rather than its in-concert prowess, ALIVE IN AMERICA is a surprisingly good live album.Featuring inspired versions of Steely Dan staples like "Bodhisattva," "Josie" and "Peg" and a showstopping performance of "Reelin` In The Years," ALIVE IN AMERICA is essentially a live greatest hits collection. Not content to simply recreate the cool-jazz pop sound of the original recordings, the new Steely Dan lineup infuses these familiar songs with a refreshing dose of energy and enthusiasm that brings out the edge in the sly lyrics and complex musical structures. Though these fine live versions add little to the Steely Dan legend, it`s great to hear Fagen and Becker performing together again and ALIVE IN AMERICA suggests that the two will create some wonderful music should they ever decide to reunite for a new studio album. $9.98 Steely Dan: Donald Fagen (vocals, electric piano, synthesizer); Walter Becker (guitar, bass).Additional personnel: Steve Khan, Hugh McCracken, Hiram Bullock, Larry Carlton (guitar); Tom Scott (alto & tenor clarinet, tenor saxophone, lyricon); George Marge, Walter Kane (bass clarinet); Michael Brecker, Dave Tofani (tenor saxophone); Ronny Cuber (baritone saxophone); Randy Brecker (trumpet, flugelhorn); Wayne Andre (trombone); Rob Mounsey (piano, synthesizer); Don Groinick (electric piano, clavinet); Patrick Rebillot, Joe Sample (electric piano); Chuck Rainey, Anthony Jackson (bass); Steve Gadd (drums, percussion); Bernard Purdie, Rick Marotta, Jeff Porcaro (drums); Nicholas Marrero (timbales); Crusher Bennett, Victor Feldman, Ralph McDonald (percussion); Leslie Miller, Patti Austin, Toni Wine, Lani Groves, Diva Gray, Gordon Grody, Frank Floyd, Zack Sanders, Valerie Simpson (background vocals).Recorded at Soundworks, A & R Studios, Sigma Sound Studios and Automated Sound Studios, New York, New York; Village Recorder, West Los Angeles, California; Producers Workshop, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.Probably the most critically revered band of the 70s, Steely Dan`s brand of slick pop with a dose of jazz/funk left a meagre but vital catalogue to cling on to. This was their last gasp at the onset of the 80s. Perhaps they were aware of the fact that they were too 70s for the 80s. This was their least accessible and most mature album (no criticism is intended), as the content washes over the listener like a warm shower. `Hey Nineteen` is the hit single from this set, a radio-friendly nostalgic look at 1967, impeccable in production and with evocative lyrics. Lots of echoey Fender Rhodes and sensitive brass. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Steely Dan - Greatest Hits
$14.83 This is a Canadian release. The seeds of this much-respected rock group were sewn at New York`s Bard College where founder members Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were students. They subsequently forged a songwriting team and with guitarist Denny Dias, formed Steely Dan. The trio was expanded by the arrival of David Palmer (vocals), Jeff `Skunk` Baxter (guitar) and Jim Hodder (drums). The accomplished Can`t Buy A Thrill drew considerable critical praise for its deft melodies and immaculate musicianship Countdown To Ecstacy was another classic of the 70s, and featured such bittersweet celebrations as `The Boston Rag` and `My Old School`. By this point Palmer had left the line-up. On Pretzel Logic, Fagen and Becker drew more fully on their love of jazz on songs like `Rikki Don`t Lose That Number`. Newcomers Michael McDonald (keyboards/vocals) and Jeff Porcaro (drums) were recruited for Katy Lied which also featured cameos by guitarist Rick Derringer and saxophonist Phil Woods. The Royal Scam redressed the commercial balance. Becker and Fagen were, by now, the sole arbiters of Steely Dan, McDonald having followed Baxter into the Doobie Brothers and Dias and Porcaro opting for studio employment. Aja continued in a similar vein where an array of quality musicians brought meticulousness to the set. Gaucho was marred by conflict between the group and record label over escalating recording costs, but the album achieved platinum sales and a hit single, `Hey Nineteen`. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. $9.98 Steely Dan: Donald Fagen (vocals, keyboards); Walter Becker (guitar).Additional personnel includes: Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Dean Parks (guitar); Tom Scott (tenor saxophone, lyricon); Wayne Shorter, Pete Christlieb (tenor saxophone); Plas Johnson (horns); Victor Feldman (keyboards, vibraphone, percussion); Joe Sample, Michael Omartian (keyboards); Chuck Rainey (bass); Paul Humphrey, Bernard Purdie, Steve Gadd (drums); Tim Schmit, Clydie King, Michael McDonald (background vocals).Engineers include: Roger Nichols, Elliot Scheiner, Bill Schnee.Recorded at Village Recorders, Los Angeles, California; Producer`s Workshop, Warner Brothers North Hollywood Recording Studios, ABC Recording Studios, Sound Labs, Hollywood, California; A&R Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This represents the pinnacle of Steely Dan`s gradual transition from rock band to their own brand of jazz-influenced white soul. Guitars were replaced by keyboards, and saxophones became more common. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were only interested in spending time in the recording studios, while the fans pined and waited. The result set new standards in recorded excellence, and is regularly used as a hi-fi shop demonstration. The ambitious title track was deemed too difficult for radio play and only the two overtly accessible tracks `Josie` and `Peg`, gave them valuable exposure. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Steely Dan - 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best Of Steely Dan *
$9.98 Steely Dan mainstays Walter Becker and Donald Fagen are credited as co-compilation producers with Universal Music executive Andy McKaie on the Steely Dan entry in Universal`s discount-priced series 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection. It`s a rule of thumb: get the artist involved in a compilation, and the choices are bound to be idiosyncratic. The rule holds here. Becker and Fagen eschew the boring hits-only approach, ignoring the Top Ten "Hey Nineteen" and the Top 40s "Black Friday," "Peg," and "FM (No Static at All)" in favor of album tracks "Any World (That I`m Welcome To)" and "Third World Man," as well as the B-side "Only a Fool Would Say That" and "My Old School," which peaked at number 63 on the Hot 100. It doesn`t really matter. More than three decades after the fact, "My Old School" sounds as much like a Steely Dan hit as any of the band`s actual Top Ten singles, and it gets as much play on classic rock radio. Is this the best of Steely Dan? No, but some of the group`s best songs are included, among them "Do It Again" and "Rikki Don`t Lose That Number." A neophyte wanting to get an idea of what Steely Dan sounds like can do so by listening to these ten tracks. Real Steely Dan fans already have multiple copies of each of these songs. ~ William Ruhlmann Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Marian McPartland/Steely Dan - Piano Jazz With Steely Dan
$10.98 Personnel: Marian McPartland (piano); Donald Fagen (vocals, piano); Walter Becker (guitar); Jay Leonhart (bass guitar); Keith Carlock (drums). It isn`t hard to imagine how some jazz purists will react upon seeing the name Steely Dan on one of Marian McPartland`s Piano Jazz releases; they`re likely to ask, "What, in God`s name, is a pop/rock group doing in McPartland`s presence?" But even though Steely Dan isn`t a jazz act per se, they have always had jazz influences -- and it would be a mistake to think of this CD as strictly a pop/rock disc. Actually, the original material of Steely Dan leaders Donald Fagen (vocals, acoustic piano) and Walter Becker (electric guitar) takes somewhat of a back seat to instrumental straight-ahead jazz when they join forces with pianist McPartland, bassist Jay Leonhart and drummer Keith Carlock. Some longtime Steely Dan enthusiasts might be disappointed to know that only three Fagen/Becker songs are performed: "Josie," "Black Friday" and "Chain Lightning" -- you won`t hear "Peg," "Do It Again," "Rikki, Don`t Lost That Number," "Deacon Blues," "Hey Nineteen" or "Reeling in the Years." Nonetheless, there are many enjoyable moments, and McPartland has no problem finding common ground with Fagen and Becker -- common ground that includes a healthy appreciation of Duke Ellington`s repertoire. Between three songs associated with the Duke ("Mood Indigo," Mercer Ellington`s "Things Ain`t What They Used to Be" and the lesser known "Limbo Jazz"), W.C. Handy`s "Hesitation Blues" and the standard "Star Eyes," Steely Dan`s encounter with McPartland is dominated by straight-ahead jazz -- not the jazz-influenced, soul-minded pop/rock that made Steely Dan famous during their `70s heyday. This intriguing CD may not have as many Steely Dan classics as some of their die-hard fans would like, but their appearance on Piano Jazz is full of pleasant surprises and reminds us just how much jazz means to `70s pop/rock icons. ~ Alex Henderson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Steely Dan: Two Against Nature
$11.36 Steely Dan have always been primarily a studio band, finding live shows and tours too arduous and unrewarding to do with any frequency. In fact, the last five years Steely Dan was together, they refused to tour at all. So, it came as a surprise to many that the Dan toured a couple of years ago, and in 2000 they surprised everyone again by releasing their first studio record in 20 years. Becker and Fagen have always been the oddballs in the annals of seventies rock, and it still shows here. Recorded live in NYC at Sony Music Stages. Includes: GREEN EARRINGS, COUSIN DUPREE, BAD SNEAKERS, JANIE RUNAWAY, JOSIE, FM, GASLIGHTING ABBIE, BLACK FRIDAY, BABYLON SISTERS, KID CHARLEMAGNE, JACK OF SPEED, PEG, WHAT A SHAME ABOUT ME, and PRETZEL LOGIC. Steely Dan-Aja-Classic Album
$8.99 Pioneering pop/jazz band Steely Dan, formed by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker in the early 70 s, had already secured five U.S Top 40 albums before the release of Aja in 1977. Aja, however, was to prove to be the biggest selling album of Steely Dan s illustrious career, reaching Number 3 in the U.S. Billboard chart, spending a year in the Top 40 there and also reaching number 5 in the U.K.Aja was the first British Top 10 hit for Steely Dan and was also the first album by Becker and Fagen as a duo. Becker and Fagen, renowned for their relentless perfectionism in the recording studio, recall the history of an album that was a year in the making, but rewarded by a prestigious Grammy Award and three major hit singles, Peg, Deacon Blues and Josie. Michael McDonald, later of the Doobie Brothers, who did guest backing vocals on Aja, the late British musician Ian Dury, record producer Gary Katz, and the legendary session musicians who worked on Aja, also contribute to this fascinating documentary.Steely Dan s Aja has proved to be one of the most outstanding jazz-rock albums in the history of popular music. This is a vivid portrait of a 70 s record that is still as fresh and as memorable more than two decades after its release, a true Classic Album.Format: DVD MOVIE |

Songs like "Black Cow" and "Here At The Western World" feature the same impeccable jazz-rock musicianship, obtuse lyrics and polished production as Steely Dan`s hits, though the songs on GOLD tend to focus on the slightly more adventurous side of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker`s music.Adding several tracks that were not on the original vinyl version of the album, this expanded edition of GOLD contains several Fagen solo tracks--"Century`s End" and "True Companion"--that could have easily come off of almost any Steely Dan album, plus a smoking live version of Steely Dan`s "Bodhisattva." Steely Dan - Definitive Collection [8/1] *
$10.72 Personnel: Walter Becker (vocals, electric guitar); Donald Fagen (vocals, piano, electric piano, organ); Jim Hodder (vocals, drums, percussion); David Palmer (vocals); Jeff Baxter (guitar, pedal steel guitar, Spanish guitar); Denny Dias (guitar, electric sitar); Elliot Randall (guitar); Jerome Richardson (tenor saxophone); Snooky Young (flugelhorn); Victor Feldman (percussion).Released in 2006, THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION is a handsome repackaging of 16 of Steely Dan`s finest moments. Featuring a cover design that perfectly captures both the sophistication and the off-kilter seediness of group masterminds Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, the collection goes heavy on the hits, including such wry pop gems as "Reelin` In the Years," "FM," "Hey Nineteen," and the delightfully funky "Peg." While Steely Dan can be a tricky band to pin down--displaying both a genuine love of pure pop and a cool detachment that can border on aloof--Becker and Fagan`s amazing ability to blend pop`s myriad forms into a smooth sound unmistakably their own remains striking decades after the music`s original release. With a songwriting approach nearly academic in its precision, the Dan`s mix of jazz, pop, funk, and rock is a mash-up for a pre-digital era: postmodern fusion music by way of the Brill Building. And while there are several quality Dan comps on the market to make that case, the DEFINITIVE COLLECTION is as concise a display of the band`s virtues as one can find. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. "Bodhisattva," for example, which opens the album, works a driving, jump-blues groove that seems at odds with the band`s laid-back, jazz inclinations. The heavy, bluesy stomp of "The Boston Rag" and the slinky, edgy boogie of "Show Biz Kids" may make it seem as though Steely Dan was vying for favor with their more roots-oriented pop-rock contemporaries.Nothing could be further from the truth, however. COUNTDOWN TO ECSTACY is more ambitious, complex, and layered than its predecessor, with a heavier dose of jazz fusion, more subtle and textured arrangements, and an even higher level of studio craftsmanship. Both "Razor Boy" and "Your Gold Teeth" demonstrate flashes of Latin flavor-- marimba-driven bop in the former, and salsa-cum-lounge jazz in the latter. The presence of session musicians--drummer Jim Hodder and guitarists Jeff Baxter and Denny Diaz--fleshes out Donald Fagen and Walter Becker`s superb songwriting and playing, making for an excellent and overlooked addition to the band`s catalogue. Steely Dan - The Royal Scam [Remaster]
$9.98 Steely Dan: Donald Fagen (vocals, keyboards); Walter Becker (guitar, bass).Additional personnel: Larry Carlton, Elliot Randall, Dean Parks, Dennis Dias (guitar); Chuck Findley, Bob Findley, Slyde Hyde, Jim Horn, Plas Johnson, John Klemmer (horns); Victor Feldman (keyboards, percussion); Paul Griffin, Don Grolnick (keyboards); Chuck Rainey (bass); Bernard Purdie, Rick Marotta (drums); Gary Coleman (percussion); Venetta Fields, Clydie KIng, Sherlie Matthews, Tim Schmit, Michael McDonald (background vocals).Recorded at ABC Studios, Los Angeles, California and A&R Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.Digitally remastered by Roger Nichols (Digital Atomics, Miami, Florida). All tracks have been digitally remastered. It was the year of America`s bicentennial celebration, but on 1976`s THE ROYAL SCAM, Steely Dan masterminds Fagen and Becker did not share in the exultant spirit of the times. The title track--a vision of fallen America from the point of view of immigrants--has a mock-celebratory chorus: "See the glory of the Royal Scam," which typifies SCAM`s heartfelt cynicism. In their next two releases (their last), Steely Dan`s sound would smoothen and incorporate less rock. This is perhaps their darkest record, and for a band known for its arch mixture of L.A. cool and ennui, that`s saying something.Guitar heroes were roundly worshipped in the `70s, and two of the record`s standout tracks, "Kid Charlemagne" and "Don`t Take Me Alive," feature incendiary axe work by Larry Carlton. Interestingly, both glorify outsiders: The former tells the story of legendary drug chemist Owsley Stanley, and the latter is a first-person account of a murderer on the lam. Other highlights: the crisp "Green Earrings" the lounge-chair funk of "Haitian Divorce" and the inscrutable "Fez," whose principal lyric is "I`m never gonna do it without the fez on/don`t make me do it without the fez on." Steely Dan's Aja (33 1/3)
$10.48 Aja was the album that made Steely Dan a commercial force on the order of contemporaries like Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles and Chicago. A double-platinum, Grammy-winning bestseller, it lingered on the Billboard charts for more than a year and spawned three hit singles. Odd, then, that its creators saw it as an "ambitious, extended" work, the apotheosis of their anti-rock, anti-band, anti-glamour aesthetic. Populated by thirty-five mostly jazz session players, Aja served up prewar song forms, mixed meters and extended solos to a generation whose idea of pop daring was Paul letting Linda sing lead once in a while. And, impossibly, it sold. Including an in-depth interview with Donald Fagen, this book paints a detailed picture of the making of a masterpiece. |

The sound is warmer, the already sophisticated harmonies somewhat richer, a little bit closer to combo jazz. It`s as if jazz pianist Bill Evans collaborated with Bob Dylan.KATY LIED contains Steely Dan`s most emotional, even passionate music up to that point, matched only by the brilliant AJA a few years later. Donald Fagen`s acerbic vocals forgoe the double tracking of the previous albums, the sarcasm melting into something close to vulnerability in a song like "Doctor Wu," maybe the greatest single tune Fagen and Becker ever wrote. KATY LIED is also notable for the appearance of vocalist Michael McDonald, whose grainy baritone blends particularly well with Fagen`s unique sound. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. They managed--on their first two albums and, especially, on PRETZEL LOGIC--to combine breezy, ear-pleasing accessibility with an immensely sophisticated sensibility that upended most pop conventions. On PRETZEL LOGIC that combination is perfected, even as band masterminds Donald Fagen and Walter Becker moved deeper into jazz-influenced territory. "Rikki Don`t Lose That Number," the album`s lead off track, is a case in point. A sinuous slice of jazz-pop that merges piano balladry with a samba-esque groove, the song became a Top Ten hit.Though Fagen and Becker write the material and handle vocals/keyboards and bass, respectively, their recording process increasingly involved a rotating cast of session musicians, honing their studio-cobbled sound to a flawless perfection. The bar is raised in terms of musicianship here, as evidenced by the sassy cover of Duke Ellington`s "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo and the bop atheleticism of "Parker`s Band," a tribute to Charlie Parker. Yet Steely Dan blend their colors ever more effectively here, writing shorter, sharper compositions packed with harmonies, instrumental interplay, witty wordplay, and satisfying hooks. PRETZEL LOGIC ranks alongside AJA as one of the band`s finest achievements. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |
