On the surface, this would appear to have the advantage over its American counterpart (MCA`s Best of 1963-75 compilation). It`s got far more material, for one thing: 26 songs, which is 11 more than the domestic retrospective. There are a couple of significant omissions of tracks that appear on the U.S. set, though, most notably the moody Billy Vera-penned "Mean Old World." Its absence from this anthology is inexcusable, as it was his best mid-`60s recording. Judgment calls aside, this does have the hits Nelson managed to squeeze in on Decca before the rise of the Beatles ("For You" and the great "Fools Rush In"), along with some rocking obscurities like "I Got a Woman" and "Gypsy Woman"; the ballads "The Very Thought of You," "I Wonder," and "There`s Nothing I Can Say" are also quite good. After 1964 he slid into early country-rock, which veered from decent to dispensable. Matthew and Gunnar Nelson are Rick Nelson`s sons.Led by brothers Matthew & Gunnar Nelson, Nelson brought Rick Nelson`s sons a lot of exposure in the early 1990s. Like that celebrated `50s icon, Matthew and Gunnar went for a polished, boy-next-door image — wholesome sex symbols, if you will — but their music didn`t sound anything like their father. Instead, this debut album boasted a glossy, `80s-sounding blend of corporate rock and arena rock (sort of White Lion meets Loverboy meets Bon Jovi, minus the "bad boy" element). Rock critics tend to deplore and rail against albums like After the Rain, but say what you will — "I Can Hardly Wait," "Fill You Up," the chart-topping "(Can`t Live Without Your) Love and Affection" and other melodic tunes are both catchy and likable. Granted, this type of pop/rock can easily become bloodless and mechanical, but the Nelson siblings come across as sincere. It’s true that Rick’s Rarities is a vault-scraping exercise. The 23 tracks are about evenly divided between previously unreleased material on the one hand, and various items from non-LP singles and obscure soundtrack and compilation albums that haven’t been on CD before on the other. It’s not bad, though, even if it’s not on the level of the best material he did for Decca, and certainly not on the level of his best early stuff on Imperial in the late ’50s and early ’60s. All but one of the songs was cut between 1964 and 1969, and as much as the compilation CDs that actually showcase the best of Rick Nelson’s Decca output, they reflect his drift from mild rockabilly-pop to early country-rock. Of the more interesting mid-’60s earliest selections here, Sonny Curtis’ “I’ve Been Lookin’” is a fair rockabilly-tinged rocker; “I Need You” a nearly gorgeous orchestrated ballad that didn’t see release at the time; the Nelson-penned “Freedom and Liberty” an ultra-tentative stab at social consciousness; and “Your Kind of Lovin’” an obscure song by Jill Jones and Annette Tucker, who’d go on to write songs recorded by the Electric Prunes. But much of the material is unmemorably average, and sometimes lethargic, even if Nelson and his backup musicians deliver reasonably committed performances. Oddest are four string-laden Bacharach-David songs from the soundtrack LP to the forgotten 1966 television special On the Flip Side, one (“Try to See It My Way”) sung with Joanie Sommers.
