Pink Moon $5.81 Pink Moon is the sound of Nick Drake cracking up. That’s not exactly true–some have long thought that his death by an overdose of an anti-depressant was an accident, and not suicide–but this album, recorded over two late nights, certainly sounds like a fever dream. Peter Buck of R.E.M. has called the album “Like an English version of (Robert Johnson’s great blues) `Hellhound on My Trail.’” The l… |

Nick Drake – A Treasury $15.99 While there was no shortage of Nick Drake collections on the market by 2004, the options for Drake fans with high-end stereo systems and/or SACD players was pretty limited (that is to say non-existent) before the release of A TREASURY. A hybrid disc remastered in Super Audio Surround Sound, it offers 15 cuts from the Drake catalog; considering that he only released three official albums, that`s a healthy chunk of the British singer/songwriter`s oeuvre. With unprecedentedly crisp quality, we`re given masterfully orchestrated folk-rock ("Hazey Jane II," "Northern Sky"), bleak, strikingly minimalist, haiku-like solo-acoustic pieces ("Pink Moon," "Black Eyed Dog"), and lush, mournfully elegant ballads ("River Man," "Way to Blue"). Throughout, Drake`s hushed, breathy voice, nimble Joao Gilberto-meets-John Fahey guitar work, and hauntingly beautiful lyricism shine through, making it clear why this doomed troubadour`s slim repertoire has been revisited so many times over the years. Nick Drake – Made To Love Magic $13.28 Personnel: Nick Drake (vocals, guitar); Rebop Kwaku Baah (congas).Liner Note Author: John Wood .Three decades after British singer/songwriter Nick Drake`s death, MADE TO LOVE MAGIC appeared, full of rare tracks and alternate versions, and intended as a "companion piece" to Drake`s official recordings. While a number of the tracks appeared previously on the TIME OF NO REPLY collection, there are a few treasures that are heard here for the first time. Whatever you think about posthumous overdubbing, it`s fascinating to hear Drake`s storied arranger Robert Kirby add new orchestrations to "Time of No Reply" and the title cut, in the style of his initial work with the troubled troubadour.More captivating, though, are the alternate versions of "Three Hours," with congas and flute and an added emphasis on Drake`s unusual, sophisticated guitar work, and "River Man." The latter`s bare-bones demo, with its haunted whisper and bossa nova-cum-folk guitar, suggests Joao Gilberto studying existentialism in Cambridge. The biggest news is the discovery of a previously unknown Drake composition, "Tow the Line," whose serpentine melody and inscrutable lyric are fully on a par with the PINK MOON material amid which it was discovered. MADE TO LOVE MAGIC isn`t the ideal introduction to Drake (start instead with his debut, FIVE LEAVES LEFT), but it`s an illuminating addition to the legacy. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Nick Drake – Bryter Layter [Remaster] $9.98 Personnel: Nick Drake (vocals, guitar); Richard Thompson (guitar); John Cale (viola, piano, celesta, harpsichord, organ); Lyn Dobson (flute); Ray Warleigh (alto saxophone); Paul Harris , Chris McGregor (piano); Dave Pegg (bass instrument); Dave Mattacks, Mike Kowalski (drums); Doris Troy, Pat Arnold (background vocals). After crafting a debut album full of beauteous, somber chamber-folk, Nick Drake pulled something of an about-face with the follow-up, BRYTER LAYTER. With a bright, sparkling production and orchestrations that occasionally border on Easy Listening, the framework is light and airy where FIVE LEAVES LEFT was dark and foreboding. The key, however, is that Drake`s artfully expressed inner turmoil peeks through at every turn in the lyrics and in his understated-but-heartfelt vocal delivery."At the Chime of a City Clock" finds Drake facing existential despair at every turn, despite an almost-lugubrious string arrangement. Perhaps the crucial moment of BRYTER LAYTER occurs on "Poor Boy," where female backing vocalists literally mock the singer`s anguished laments. Clearly, for as much as Drake`s heart and soul were bared in every note of his music, he was self-aware enough to know that his disillusioned-romantic view of the world was one that put him on the fringes of society. Of course, some 25 years later, his early-1970s work would find a much wider audience, even though the initial era of the sensitive singer/songwriter had long since passed. Nick Drake’s Pink Moon (33 1/3) $10.48 The backside of Nick Drake’s headstone, wedged deep into the earth of an English parish church graveyard, reads: "Now we rise and we are everywhere." The words were penned by Drake in 1974; 30 years later, they are jarringly prophetic. Like nearly all prematurely buried cult figures, Nick Drake is reinvented each time he is rediscovered. In 2000, the sheepish, astral musings of "Pink Moon" became synonymous with backing a Volkswagen Cabrio convertible away from a raucous house party, as VW boldly sold American drivers on the notion of eschewing red plastic cups and bro-hugs for moonbeams and tree trunks (and a cute German car – sort of). The Cabrio ad inadvertently sparked an unlikely boost in record sales, propelling the album towards platinum status nearly 28 years after its release. But with each well-intentioned revival of interest, Nick Drake slips further and further out of reach, martyred and codified, superceded and consumed by his own tragic context. Since his controversial death in 1974, Nick Drake has become: the 26-year-old prophet, the diffident enigma, the tortured precursor to Kurt Cobain, the fallen hero, the folksinger-as-folksymbol, the self-sacrificing patron saint of lonely, disaffected teenagers – the One who died for our sins. Like dog-eared, over-highlighted copies of On The Road, Pink Moon gets passed around, shuffled from friend to friend like a secret, and whispered into pillows. There is something about the humility of Pink Moon – its unassuming twenty-eight minute playtime, the modest timbre of Drake’s whispers, the unrecognizable open tunings, the way you always find yourself inching closer to your stereo speakers, trying to climb inside this record, to feed off its weird warmth – that endures. This book will explore how a tiny acoustic record has puttered and purred its way into a new millennium. Amanda Petrusich interviews producer Joe Boyd, string arranger Robert Kirby, and even the marketing team behind the VW commercial. |

Nick Drake – Five Leaves Left [Remaster] $9.58 Personnel: Nick Drake (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Richard Thompson (electric guitar); Clare Lowther (cello); Paul Harris (piano); Tristan Fry (vibraphone, drums); Danny Thompson (bass); Rocki Dzidzornu (congas).Nick Drake`s debut album encapsulates a marriage between folk music and the singer-songwriter genre. Part Donovan, part Jim Webb, he articulated an aching romanticism at a time when progressive rock ran rampant. Beautiful melodies and fragrant accompaniment, in particular Robert Kirby`s stunning string arrangements, enhance the artist`s sense of longing in which warm, but understated, vocals accentuate the album`s passive mystery. An aura of existential cool envelops the proceedings, accentuated by Danny Thompson`s sonorous bass lines and Drake`s poetic imagery. The result is a shimmering, autumnal collection, reflective but never morbid. It`s a tragedy that Drake never lived to see how his stature has grown. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
