John Lee Hooker
Has John Lee Hooker is fantastic, non-commercial recordings or what?

I just finished listening to some of John Lee Hooker's non-chartered topping recordings and was absolutely floored by them! I personally feel that his playing and writing is far superior in his little known work, unlike the "radio worthy 'things as he did his bones. Not to shun these recordings, but I had to observe how impressed I was with the lesser-known songs out there. Formulation (guitar / vocals) and sounds that come out of that AMP ridiculous …. What do ya'll think?

I like Hooker's stuff fine, but find much of what a bit monotonous. Not sure what you mean by non-commercial. With 3 or 4 exceptions, most of his generation "non-commercial" because the popularity of its Type Delta blues already slowed before he first recorded. Hooker, father of British blues?? This section will be more rightfully go to Alexis Koerner or Cyril Davies, perhaps Mayall, if you want to stretch. A little trivia, you can enjoy-Hooker was one of the most fertile recording artists in all of blues. He has recorded for numerous labels. Nobody is quite sure how many, because he used pseudonyms. He actually recorded more than one label on the same day, and he did it more than once!

The back cover promises "complete archival performances of [John Lee Hooker's] most popular songs," all courtesy of the Hooker estate. That's good news for anyone used to music programs containing only frustratingly brief clips of their subjects at work, and it's exactly what Come and See About Me delivers--in spades--in this superb, two-hour compilation featuring the late bluesman in live perform...

Apart from the inherent clarity and richness of its black-and-white VistaVision--a wonderful format--The Lonely Man could be mistaken for a mediocre "adult Western" episode from '50s TV. The sets look like sets, not living spaces, and people trade ponderous, pause-laden dialogue instead of talking. Jack Palance plays an ex-gunslinger--a papier-mâché death's head--trying to reconnect with so...

A brief, ten-song set of sides originally recorded by Bernie Besman at United Sound Studios in Detroit between 1948 and 1952 and leased to Modern Records in Los Angeles (Besman did release some of them on his own Sensation Records imprint), this is a prototypical sequence of John Lee Hooker being, well, John Lee Hooker, churning out loose-limbed blues boogies on solo electric guitar. Included are "Boogie Chillen`," "Hobo Blues," "Crawling King Snake," "Huckle Up Baby," "House Rent Boogie," and "I`m in the Mood," which in Hooker`s world could almost pass for pop. Since Hooker never significantly altered his style during his long career, these first recordings set the stage for all that came after, and he arguably never sounded fresher or better. It`s kind of brief, though. ~ Steve LeggettA brief, ten-song set of sides originally recorded by Bernie Besman at United Sound Studios in Detroit between 1948 and 1952 and leased to Modern Records in Los Angeles (Besman did release some of them on his own Sensation Records imprint), this is a prototypical sequence of John Lee Hooker being, well, John Lee Hooker, churning out loose-limbed blues boogies on solo electric guitar. Winding through the literally hundreds of titles in John Lee Hooker's catalog is a daunting task for even the most seasoned and learned blues connoisseur. This is especially true when considering Hooker recorded under more than a dozen aliases for as many labels during the late '40s, '50s, and early '60s. I'm John Lee Hooker was first issued in 1959 during his tenure with Vee Jay and is "the Hook" in his element as well as prime. Although many of these titles were initially cut for Los Angeles-based Modern Records in the early '50s, the recordings heard here are said to best reflect Hooker's often-emulated straight-ahead primitive Detroit and Chicago blues styles. The sessions comprising the original 12-track album -- as well as the four bonus tracks on the 1998 Charly CD reissue -- are taken from six sessions spread over the course of four years (1955-1959). Hooker works both solo -- accompanied only by his own percussive guitar and the solid backbeat of his foot rhythmically pulsating against plywood -- as well as in several different small-combo settings. Unlike the diluted, pop-oriented blues that first came to prominence in the wake of the British Invasion of the early to mid-'60s, the music on this album is infinitely more authentic in presentation. As the track list indicates, I'm John Lee Hooker includes many of his best-known and loved works. From right out of the gate comes the guttural ramble-tamble of "Dimples" in its best-known form. Indeed it can be directly traced to -- and is likewise acknowledged by -- notable purveyors of Brit rock such as Eric Burdon -- who incorporated it into the earliest incarnation of the Animals, the Spencer Davis Group, as well as the decidedly more roots-influenced Duane Allman. Another of Hooker's widely covered signature tunes featured on this volume is "Boogie Chillun." This rendering is arguably the most recognizable in the plethora of versions that have seemingly appeared on every Hooker-related compilation available. Additionally, this version was prominently featured in The Blues Brothers movie as well as countless other films and adverts. Likewise, a seminal solo "Crawlin' King Snake" is included here. The tune became not only a staple of Hooker's, it was also prominently included on the Doors' L.A. Woman album and covered by notable bluesmen Albert King, B.B. There are innumerable Hooker collections on the market, and this two-disc set wouldn`t be anything particularly special except that it actually charts through his entire history, beginning with the ageless "Boogie Chillen," which was recorded in 1948 and topped the R&B charts for Modern Records in 1949, through "Tupelo," which was recorded in 1993 and released on the Pointblank LP Chill Out in 1995. In between these two are most of Hooker`s essential tracks, including 1949`s "Crawlin` King Snake" from Modern, 1962`s "Boom Boom" from Vee-Jay Records, 1964`s "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" from Chess and "The Healer" from 1989`s Chameleon Records LP of the same title that paired Hooker with various musical celebrity guests like Bonnie Raitt and Carlos Santana and gave Hooker yet another opportunity to trot out his amazingly durable song catalog. A single-disc of either Hooker`s Modern or Vee-Jay sides would probably deliver more quality John Lee bang for the buck, but the historical sweep of this collection, which truly spans Hooker`s whole career (which admittedly didn`t vary a whole lot), gives it a good deal of added credence. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. They should have been pleased that the world`s greatest living Delta bluesman was going to make some money before he turned up his toes. Teaming up with Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Canned Heat (not for the first time) and others, lent Hooker`s blues a contemporary gloss. It took the album to the upper reaches of the album charts around the world, brought him a number of Grammy awards and a new career in advertising. The opening (and title) track features guitar god and long time Hooker fan Carlos Santana (with his band). Although quite slick sounding, Santana`s Latin funk grooves and typically blistering solo fit suprisingly well with John Lee`s gutbucket vocals--a testament to the aging blues man`s incredible versatility. Roy Rogers (the blues guy, not the cowboy fast food mogul) reveals himself as an adept and sensitive producer and also adds some very tasty slide guitar on four tunes.CHILL OUT includes several Hooker solo guitar and vocal pieces, some of which are among the best of his career. "Too Young," in particular, is chilling in it`s sparseness and intensity. Hooker`s voice is in great shape and, for a man known for his "talking" style, he can sing incredibly sweetly and melodically when he wants to. On "Kiddio," which features some truly funky piano from the great Charles Brown, John Lee positively croons. Whether with a full band or all alone, John Lee Hooker`s talent burns brightly throughout CHILL OUT.Chill Out isn`t the superstar blow-out of John Lee Hooker`s late-`80s albums, yet it retains that flavor. Featuring some extended soloing from Carlos Santana, Chill Out is filled with long blues workouts, all captured in pristine, state-of-the-art technology. Nothing on the disc captures the raw vitality of Hooker`s pr

John Lee Hooker - Blues Legend John Lee Hooker - Blues Legend
$7.95

BLUES LEGEND contains tracks from John Lee Hooker`s years at Chess Records.Personnel: John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar). This disc kicks off with Hooker in uncharacteristically mellow mode. The interwoven electric and acoustic guitars on "Doin` The Shout" provide a gentle backing for Hooker`s weathered vocals. Fans of the man`s raw, gutbucket sensibilities needn`t despair, however, because such tracks as "House Rent Boogie" and "(I Got) A Good `Un" tear up the place with pulsing beats and primitive, soulful guitar leads. The production distinguishes BLUES LEGEND from older, classic Hooker material. Production values are noticeably rich for a blues recording, sometimes bordering on the vaguely psychedelic, complete with reverb guitar and fat, echoing basslines. Favorites such as "House Rent Boogie" and "Boom Boom" round out the set, making BLUES LEGEND an outstanding sampler--with great sound and performances--of one of the all-time blues greats. Compiled by the estate of Hooker, with his daughter Zakiya at the helm, the unreleased material leans heavily toward soul-blues united with Hooker`s patented electric Delta boogie. "Loving People," "Funky Mabel," "Six Page Letter" (a ballad with synth strings), and "Rock These Blues Away" are highlights. Zakiya Hooker takes the spotlight on "Mean Mean World," singing lead alongside her father, and the acoustic "Wednesday Evening Blues" features George Thorogood on guitar. Hooker staples "Dimples," "It Serves Me Right to Suffer," "Mad Man Blues," and "Boogie Chillen" also make their perennial appearances. While there are no real surprises here, Face to Face still sounds great and is recommended alongside John Lee`s last official releases, Chill Out and Don`t Look Back, both on Pointblank. ~ Al Campbell Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. John Lee Hooker - The Blues Biography Series: John Lee Hooker John Lee Hooker - The Blues Biography Series: John Lee Hooker
$6.98

This collection centers on the prolific John Lee Hooker`s recordings for Vee-Jay Records in the late `50s and early `60s, with a nice dose of sides Hooker recorded for Bernie Besman at United Sound Studios in Detroit between 1948 and 1952 (these were leased to Modern Records in Los Angeles, although Besman did release some of them on his own Sensation Records imprint). You`d have to just know that, though, since the track annotation here, beyond a broad and hardly specific biographical booklet, is nonexistent. However, the music is vintage Hooker, and some of it is as smooth as Hooker ever got (relatively speaking, of course). Check out "Onions" here to get a glimpse of what Hooker might have sounded like in a parallel universe backed up by Booker T. & the MG`s and the Memphis Horns. There are countless compilations of Hooker material on the market, issued by a variety of labels under assorted different titles, but you really can`t go wrong with this guy -- he always delivered what he was supposed to deliver with no frills and no fuss. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. John Lee Hooker - The Country Blues Of John Lee Hooker John Lee Hooker - The Country Blues Of John Lee Hooker
$10.98

Solo performer: John Lee Hooker (vocals, acoustic guitar).Recorded in Detroit, Michigan in April 1959. Originally released on Riverside (838). Includes original release liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. This 1959 recording is just John Lee Hooker, his acoustic guitar and his voice. What`s deceptively complex in his enormous body of work is the way he conjures dark moods and hypnotic rhythms from the simplest of components--sometimes only one or two chords. Hooker has roots in the Mississippi Delta blues, specifically Charlie Patton, and he`s the only latter day bluesman with direct ties to that era (he was born in 1920).Whether abetted by a rhythm section or stripped down to basics, Hooker uses modal chords and endlessly snaking grooves. The rhythm of his guitar chugs along hypnotically under his supple voice, which can turn from a plaint to a growl in a flash. This set is both the map to a hidden treasure and the treasure itself. John Lee Hooker - Live At Newport John Lee Hooker - Live At Newport
$17.08

Recorded in 1960 & 1963. Includes liner notes by John Milward.Digitally remastered using turbo bit technology by Jeff Zaraya.Live at Newport is an addition to the already huge pile of archival John Lee Hooker releases (one that will surely continue to grow as licenses to Hooker`s myriad recordings for different labels exchange hands). What differentiates this release from many of the others is that it focuses on a pair of acoustic performances from the bluesman, a rarity in the Hooker catalog. In the early `60s, at the height of the "folk scare," Hooker stepped in front of crowds -- at clubs, coffeehouses, and festivals -- with his acoustic guitar. Live at Newport is split between two performances at the Newport Folk Festival -- a solo shot from 1960 and a set (or set highlights?) with upright bassist Bill Lee from 1963. The former is stunning for its clarity, reveling in a warmth that can only be attained from placing a microphone in the vicinity of a man with an acoustic guitar, turning the levels way up, and absorbing everything: the scratch of the pick on the strings, the echo of the performer`s foot as it taps on the platform, the bristle of buttons as they graze the back of the guitar, the intake of breath. The first cuts on the disc are exquisitely rendered, with a great sense of dynamics inherent in Hooker`s patented free blues style. The sound quality of the latter tracks leaves much to be desired, with Hooker`s guitar often getting lost in the ambience of the room or the muffled thump of Lee`s bass. Still, there is some wonderfully intimate playing as Hooker simultaneously leads and plays off of Lee`s parts. ~ Jesse Jarnow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.Originally released on Vee-Jay in 1959.Personnel: John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar).Liner Note Author: Jerry McCulley.Recording information: 10/19/1955-01/??/1959.Winding through the literally hundreds of titles in John Lee Hooker`s catalog is a daunting task for even the most seasoned and learned blues connoisseur. This is especially true when considering Hooker recorded under more than a dozen aliases for as many labels during the late `40s, `50s, and early `60s. I`m John Lee Hooker was first issued in 1959 during his tenure with Vee Jay and is "the Hook" in his element as well as prime. Although many of these titles were initially cut for Los Angeles-based Modern Records in the early `50s, the recordings heard here are said to best reflect Hooker`s often-emulated straight-ahead primitive Detroit and Chicago blues styles. Unlike the diluted, pop-oriented blues that first came to prominence in the wake of the British Invasion of the early to mid-`60s, the music on this album is infinitely more authentic in presentation. As the track list indicates, I`m John Lee Hooker includes many of his best-known and loved works. Another of Hooker`s widely covered signature tunes featured on this volume is "Boogie Chillun." This rendering is arguably the most recognizable in the plethora of versions that have seemingly appeared on every Hooker-related compilation available. Additionally, this version was prominently featured in The Blues Brothers movie as well as countless other films and adverts. Likewise, a seminal solo "Crawlin` King Snake" is included here. The tune became not only a staple of Hooker`s, it was also prominently included on the Doors` L.A. Woman album and covered by notable bluesmen Albert King, B.B. King, and Big Joe Williams, whose version predates this one by several decades. I`m John Lee Hooker is one of the great blues collections of the post-World War II era. John Lee Hooker: That's My Story (DVD) A teenage runaway who never went to school, John Lee Hooker had trouble spelling his name, even into his eighties. But, despite these humble beginnings, John Lee Hooker is today considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century--the Godfather of the Blues, the King of the Boogie. John Lee Hooker will ever be remembered as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Filmed just a few years before his death, John Lee Hooker: That's My Story takes audiences inside the life and times of this Blues legend and the music that influenced a rising generation of rockers. John Lee tells the tale himself, with help from his family, closest friends, and musical colleagues including Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Carlos Santana and Robert Cray. From humble beginnings as the son of a sharecropper, through his experiences touring the Jim Crow South, to his performances in San Francisco's Boom Boom Room toward the end of his life, this film chronicles the journey that ultimately established Hooker as Blues royalty. Rare and captivating live performance footage includes Hooker playing Blues favorites; That's My Story, Boom Boom, Boogie Chillen, and the Grammy Award-winning I'm in the Mood duet with Bonnie Raitt.

In the ensuing years, the Hook made a number of commercially and critically acclaimed records that found him playing alongside a host of legendary friends and admirers. THE BEST OF FRIENDS gathers together the cream of these collaborations in one place.Being one of the greatest blues musicians of all time means that John Lee Hooker`s made some pretty famous acquaintances along the way. This means Los Lobos and Juke Logan back him on a swinging reading of "Dimples" and Carlos Santana helps create a kind of samba blues vibe for "The Healer" and "Chill Out (Things Gonna Change)." Also included on FRIENDS are "I`m in the Mood," Hooker`s Grammy Award-winning duet with Bonnie Raitt and two tracks with acolyte Van Morrison: the ominous "I Cover The Waterfront" and the wistful "Don`t Look Back." The inclusion of new tracks with Ben Harper ("Burnin` Hell") and Eric Clapton ("Boogie Chillen") sweetens this package, but it is Hooker`s solo reading of "Tupelo" that induces goosebumps. The variety and range these musicians add to Hooker`s straight-up blues stylings makes for a textured and interesting combination. Hooker`s tunes touch on the traditional themes: feeling down ("Sitting In My Dark Room"), getting a good woman ("I Got A Good `Un"), money troubles ("House Rent Boogie") and standing at the crossroads ("Standing At The Crossroads"). Hooker`s irresistibly gritty guitar and voice, combined with fine session work and the novelty of unusual elements like electric piano, makes this disc one of his best collaborative projects. Fortunately, that is not the case with this wonderful 1991 album by blues legend John Lee Hooker. Even though the guest list includes Albert Collins, Robert Cray, Van Morrison, Nick Lowe, Keith Richards and Carlos Santana, Hooker is the driving force on this album from start to finish. With his voice stronger and more assured than ever and his guitar playing right on the money, MR. LUCKY is arguably the best of Hooker`s latter-day recordings. Even though Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner provide a serious groove on "This Is Hip" and Van Morrison and Hooker ooze bluesy soul on "I Cover The Waterfront," Hooker shows that he can deliver the goods without his all-star supporting cast on the down-and-dirty boogie of the opening track "I Want To Hug You" and the stark acoustic blues of "Highway 13." Though the days of Hooker`s classic Chess sides-which featured only the bluesman`s raw voice, wiry, distorted electric guitar, and a rhythm track consisting of Hooker`s foot pounding a miked 2x4-were long gone, the artist had attained a new fluency with full backing bands. The tunes included here are culled from some of Hooker`s finest `60s releases, including IT SERVES YOU RIGHT TO SUFFER, THE REAL FOLK BLUES, and URBAN BLUES. First is Cream, recorded in 1977 and originally released on LP by Tomato. It was a double album -- and is preserved that way in CD format -- featuring "the Hook" with his band the Coast to Coast Blues Band performing at the Keystone. The other disc in this collection was split album called Blue on Blues featuring Hooker on one side and Lightnin` Hopkins on the other. The Hopkins session was recorded in 1969, and Hooker`s in the early `70s. It has already been issued by Fuel once on CD. ~ Thom Jurek Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. This 16-track collection sweats down Rhino's two-disc anthology to a lean, mean and essential single disc. Here are the earliest recordings that established Hooker as a major blues artist -- "Boogie Chillen," "Hobo Blues," "I'm In the Mood," "Crawlin' Kingsnake," and "Huckle Up Baby" -- and they sound better here than on most other collections, reverberating with a clarity that belies their age. The rest of the set follows Hooker's move toward working with bands not always in step with his erratic timing, but still producing classic blues on favorites like "Dimples" and "Boom Boom." If you're going to own only one Hooker collection, add this one to the shopping basket. ~ Cub Koda, All Music GuidePerformers: John Lee Hooker - Guitar, Vocals

The 16 tracks on this John Lee Hooker compilation were recorded at Joe Van Battle's rather fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants Detroit studio in the late '40s and early '50s and subsequently licensed to and released on King Records. Since Hooker was under contract to LA's Modern Records during this time, these sides were issued under various pseudonyms (often as Texas Slim), but the loose, boogie blues style on display is unmistakably pure John Lee. Unfortunately the sound quality on these recordings is a bit on the rough (and not a good kind of rough) side, and they don't measure up to the still raw but much better recorded material released by Hooker on Modern during the same period. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music GuidePerformers: John Lee Hooker - Guitar, Vocals

Originally released on Riverside (12-321). Includes original liner notes by Orrin Keepnews.Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).By the time of this 1960 recording, John Lee Hooker`s blues had become part of the "folk boom," and Hooker was one of the many blues and folk artists rediscovered by white urban kids caught up in the late-`50s/early-`60s folk revival. Naturally, Hooker was happy to oblige a movement that allowed him access to a wider audience, so he entered a New York studio with famed jazz producer Orrin Keepnews and the rhythm section from Cannonball Adderly`s group for a dozen bracing tracks of unadorned blues. Though the most effective cuts are (as usual) solo tunes like the subtly insinuating "Come On and See About Me," bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes do an admirable job of keeping it appropriately simple while providing a framework for Hooker`s ominous acoustic riffs and warm, craggy voice. John Lee Hooker - Down Home Blues John Lee Hooker - Down Home Blues
$20.89

Personnel: John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar); Eddie Kirkland (guitar).John Lee Hooker never met a record contract with an exclusivity clause he felt he needed to honor, and he recorded under countless different names for any label that would pay him the cash in the early going, filling the start of his imposingly lengthy discography with probably more questions than answers. During the period of time covered by this single disc set (roughly 1951 to 1954), Hooker officially was tracking in both Detroit and Chicago for the Chess and Modern imprints, but he may or may not have cut sides under different names (including as John Lee Booker) during this time period for King, Savoy, Deluxe, Fortune, Gotham, Specialty and who knows how many other companies. Luckily for his listeners, he always sounded exactly the same, delivering a raw and only slightly (emphasis on slightly) urbanized version of the country blues, and it mattered little if drums, horns or anything else was thrown into the final mix. It always sounded exactly like John Lee Hooker. This set is a collection of Chess and Modern sides, most of them with Hooker doing his rugged blues as a solo act, but joined on occasion by Eddie Kirkland on second guitar, Bob Thurman on piano, Tom Whitehead on drums or Jimmy Miller on trumpet, although never all of them at the same time. The only constant is Hooker`s rough vocal roar, his raw, surging and time-challenged guitar style and his continual foot stomping. But true artistry is never really about perfection, and these Hooker sides have an intense vitality that easily overcomes their musical limitations. There are countless collections of this early Hooker material on the market, but this one does try to get the recording dates, locations and personnel correct, so it gets points for that. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Around the same time, however, Hooker and other traditional blues artists such as Mississippi Fred McDowell were being "rediscovered" by folk audiences eager to hear this rapidly disappearing style of music. Shortly thereafter the British blues boom of the mid-`60s effectively crossbred traditional blues with rock & roll.Eventually the cycle came back to the United States as the success of The Yardbirds and Cream inspired American blues-rock artists like Canned Heat, and albums like HOOKER `N` HEAT that were both homage and collaboration. Recorded live in Los Angeles, the session showcases the edgy rock thump of Canned Heat more than it does Hooker (who only sings on the last three tracks). But the band matches the guitarist`s idiosyncratic style surprisingly well, and backing vocals by soul legends the Chambers Brothers are more than welcome. This fine outing brings these young blues-rock musicians right back to the source. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

This makes the reissue of a classic John Lee Hooker album like 1966`s smoking IT SERVES YOU RIGHT TO SUFFER all the more appreciated.Backed by the sympathetic quartet of guitarist Barry Galbraith, legendary bassist Milt Hinton, drummer David Panama Francis, and trombonist William Wells--whose interjections give the bluesy tunes an unexpected but surprisingly effective `20s jazz feel--Hooker`s boogie-style slide guitar sounds right at home. This is possibly the best full-band recording of Hooker`s long career, and one of interest even to those who prefer his solo guitar-and-voice records. Highlights include the incendiary title track and the rollicking "Shake It Baby." Though the playing time is a bit short, this is still a richly satisfying listening experience. Personnel includes: John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar); Lowell Fulson (guitar).Includes liner notes by Bruce Flett.Digitally remastered by Ron Capone.I FEEL GOOD brings together Hooker studio sessions that feature a crack backing band, with Lowell Fulson on lead guitar. With an emphasis on the man`s famous boogie woogie rhythms (as evidenced by the title track and "Roll and Tumble"), Hooker pushes through these nine cuts with a dark intensity--his guitar sending out raw, pulsing patterns, his understated vocal delivery sounding tortured and careless at once. In tracks like "Looking Back Over My Day" and "Come On Baby," Hooker downshifts to smoky slow-tempos, a mode equally perfect for his expressive, down-and-dirty guitar/vocal talents. His rapport with the band is particularly noteworthy, as the musicians seem to read the pacing of Hooker`s songs and playing with ease. I FEEL GOOD is vintage Hooker, and an excellent example of what the legendary bluesman can do with a full band. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
