Liner Note Authors: Skip Voogd; Jimmy Cliff.A master of catchy pop-reggae, Jimmy Cliff`s best work was done at the close of the 1960s with legendary Jamaican producer Leslie Kong. Following Kong`s death in 1971, Cliff seemed to falter, and while he never stopped making albums, the quality of his releases began to be a little hit-or-miss. This collection of singles released on the international market actually bypasses that problem by sticking to the bona fide hits, and it forms a nice overview of Cliff`s career, from the classic Kong material ("Vietnam," "Many Rivers to Cross," "Wonderful World, Beautiful People," "The Harder They Come") to later gems, like Cliff`s version of Johnny Nash`s "I Can See Clearly Now." ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Includes liner notes by David Katz.Producers: Jimmy Cliff, Derrick Harriot, Leslie Kong, Byron Lee, Guilly Bright. The soundtrack to the groundbreaking film about Jamaican subcultures, this superb selection is also a synthesis of late 60s and early 70s reggae. Recordings by Jimmy Cliff, the movie`s star, form the album`s core and his contributions, notably `Many Rivers To Cross`, show his understated power to great effect. An important figure in the development of reggae, Cliff at last secured deserved acclaim with this collection. His work is ably supported by `Pressure Drop`, one of the finest songs the Maytals ever recorded, while the Melodians and Slickers prove equally strong. The latter`s `Johnny Too Bad` perfectly encapsulates the film`s plot, one that helped launch reggae into the international arena. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Includes liner notes by Mike Ragogna & Dana Smart.Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (1999, MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).Audio Remixer: Jimmy Bralower.Liner Note Authors: Dana Smart; Mike Ragogna. Not a career-spanning overview, as opening number "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" dates from 1969, seven years into Jimmy Cliff`s career, but this is an excellent trawl through his past nonetheless. Ultimate Collection should really have kicked off with "Waterfall," his first international hit (number one in Brazil), but "World" brought him success in the both in the U.K. and U.S., and apparently that`s all that counts. Nevertheless, the set follows the reggae star down the years, through hit singles and across crucial album tracks, and bringing it all bang up to date with "Rise Up," a number from Cliff`s 1999 Humanitarian album. However, there`s one yawning gap — 1982 to 1988, when Cliff was signed to the Columbia label. Half this collection is given over to the early reggae years, as Cliff`s mentor and producer Leslie Kong and his British label Island groomed him for international success, although there was always a tension between the singer/songwriter Island head Chris Blackwell wanted to transform Cliff into and the reggae hero Kong was busily creating. In the end, Cliff was left behind by both; Blackwell transferred his enthusiastic attentions to Bob Marley, while Kong died unexpectedly in 1972. "Sitting in Limbo" was Cliff`s haunting lament to the aftermath. "Struggling Man," "If I Follow My Mind," and "Sooner or Later," the first two title tracks to his 1974 and 1975 albums, respectively, all reflect Cliff`s attempts to find his feet on his own. "Give the People What They Want," the title track to his 1981 album, and two other cuts from that set show he finally had, and was now poised for even greater success. Skipping the rest of the decade, the collection picks back up with Cliff`s 1993 hit cover of Johnny Nash`s "I Can See Clearly Now," and closes with one of the better tracks from the rather weak Humanitarian album. You couldn`t do much better than this on a single disc; however, the lack of material from his Columbia albums gives a skewed view of his career. Thus, fans will still need to add one of the Sony compilations to better complete the picture. ~ Jo-Ann Greene Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Janson; Chuck Krall; Harry Goodwin.Arranger: Larry Fallon.Jimmy Cliff has always occupied an odd position in reggae music, first of all because he predates it significantly, but also because for much of his career he merged his musical interests with international pop considerations to the extent that he managed to record frequently for such major labels as Warner, EMI, Universal, and Sony. Although his commercial success was spotty, it was recurrent; he first hit the charts internationally in 1969 and was still scoring occasionally in the mid-`90s. His label hopping had made it practically impossible to assemble a thorough compilation of his work until the release of Anthology. Universal`s Hip-O reissue subsidiary specializes in putting together anthologies that span record labels, and the compilers had quite a task on their hands when it came to Cliff. Early in his career, he recorded for Island, later controlled by Universal (including his contributions to the celebrated soundtrack to The Harder They Come), and in the early `80s he was on the Universal-controlled MCA label, so Hip-O could start with that material. But there was still a chunk of recordings issued by Warner/Reprise in the U.S. and EMI in the U.K. in the `70s as well as a period on Sony`s Columbia imprint in the `80s and `90s to consider. Nevertheless, Hip-O`s Anthology succeeds in being the perfect two-disc compilation of Cliff`s work over 30 years, 1962-1993. There are early Jamaican hits; the international breakthrough "Wonderful World, Beautiful People"; the topical hit "Viet Nam"; tracks from The Harder They Come, including "Sitting in Limbo" and "Many Rivers to Cross"; Cliff`s version of Cat Stevens` "Wild World"; numerous tracks from the Warner/EMI period; and Columbia hits like "Club Paradise" and Cliff`s U.S. Top 20 hit revival of Johnny Nash`s "I Can See Clearly Now" from 1993-1994. Not only is the compilation thorough, but for the first time, it gives a good sense of Cliff`s career as a whole, revealing his talents as a songwriter and his ability to use Jamaican rhythms to make a music palatable to pop audiences around the world. ~ William Ruhlmann Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Includes liner notes by Elena Oumano. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Although this is subtitled "The Best of Jimmy Cliff," it`s really a label-specific best-of, not a true survey of the best material Cliff`s done in his lengthy career. That`s because no less than two-thirds of the 15 selections are taken from the singer`s 1980 Columbia albums. A few of his most famous earlier recordings (the 1969 hit "Wonderful World, Beautiful People" and two songs from the soundtrack to The Harder They Come) were licensed, and there are also cuts he contributed to other soundtracks ("Third World People," done for Club Paradise, and "I Can See Clearly Now" from Cool Runnings). But basically, it`s the best of Cliff`s Columbia years, not a balanced survey of a career that began back in the early `60s. That wouldn`t be such a problem, but — as most Cliff and reggae fans would agree — his later recordings, such as his Columbia albums, certainly are not up to his prime earlier output. Most of it is mundane crossover reggae/R&B/pop. Cliff sings consistently well, but the production is often too slick in a dated 1980s fashion. The reggae isn`t always buried by any means; cuts like "Treat the Youths Right" and "Roots Woman" are reasonable upbeat Cliff originals, and "Peace Officer" has the sort of political concerns common to much reggae music. On the other hand, something like "Reggae Night" is a forgettable attempt to reach into the R&B dance market. Most of the disc is better than that, but its overall bland character is set all the more in relief when periodically interrupted by those older licensed tracks. ~ Richie Unterberger Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. What`s especially valuable about this two-disc survey of Jimmy Cliff`s early years is that it collects in one package both his ska and reggae tracks for famed Jamaican producer Leslie Kong, and while it could be argued that Cliff didn`t truly find his full creative voice until the advent of rocksteady and reggae, having his earlier ska singles here on the first disc affords a nice look at Cliff`s roots and development. Seldom has a Jamaican artist`s best work been so tied to a single producer, for the fact remains that Cliff, although he continues to make competent records, was never quite the same artistic and creative force after Kong`s death in 1971. The very heart of Cliff`s valuable and considerable legacy is here and it could very easily be argued that everything you need is in this package. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Jimmy Cliff - Harder They Come - Definitive Collection

Jimmy Cliff – Harder They Come – Definitive Collection

$23.74

An enlightening if somewhat disappointing set that neither lives up to its title nor to this normally excellent series` reputation. Still, The Harder They Come: The Definitive Collection breaks new ground in the Jimmy Cliff stakes, finally putting the artist`s early work in perspective. Few of the artist`s best-of sets bother with Cliff`s recordings prior to his breakthrough in the late `60s. Earlier in the decade, though, the singer unleashed a stream of Jamaican hit singles that also rocked the British reggae scene. This two-CD set dedicates the first half of disc one exclusively to a roundup of Cliff`s ska 45s, presented chronologically. Leapfrogging to 1968`s "Waterfall," a Brazilian number one, the set shifts into the early reggae age. The first half of disc two follows Cliff to world renown, with the release of the movie The Harder They Come in the U.K. and a clutch of international hits. Then, in August, 1971, his mentor/producer, Leslie Kong, died, and with the Island label turning its attention to Bob Marley, Cliff was left to struggle on his own. Although the chart hits dried up, the singer continued releasing strong albums, some of which were nominated or won Grammys. But Cliff`s post-Kong career is dispensed with in half a disc, suggesting his golden years were gone, a far from accurate assessment. For devoting so much space to the ska years, this compilation rights many past wrongs, but by so abbreviating Cliff`s past 30-plus years, it commits new ones. Perhaps there`s just no winning with a canon so long and varied, but in the end this set is far from definitive. ~ Jo-Ann Greene Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Various Artists/Jimmy Cliff - EMI Years 1973-1975

Various Artists/Jimmy Cliff – EMI Years 1973-1975

$12.25

Liner Note Author: Michael DeKoningh.Jimmy Cliff`s strongest work was done under the wing of legendary Jamaican producer Leslie Kong in the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period that saw the pair craft such soulful pop-reggae classics as "Wonderful World, Beautiful People," "You Can Get It if You Really Want," "Vietnam," and the gorgeous "Many Rivers to Cross." Work on the soundtrack and movie The Harder They Come had just been completed when Kong died of a heart attack in 1971, and with him went a certain intangible spark in Cliff`s recordings; Although he was too gifted a performer and writer to make patently bad albums, Cliff hasn`t delivered anything since as brilliant as his early efforts with Kong. This compilation, drawn from his three albums with EMI, Unlimited (1973), House of Exile (1974), and Brave Warrior (1975), represents Cliff`s first extended phase without Kong`s guidance, and while the tracks here follow roughly the same template as before — melodic, wise pop tunes over solid rhythms, sweetened with tasteful string arrangements — the results seem only partially realized. The best tracks here ( "On My Life," the bitter "I`ve Been Dead 400 Years," "Every Tub," the beautifully sad "Million Teardrops") all exhibit a kind of weary exhaustion, and whatever optimism they project seems strangely desperate. Cliff at half-speed is still a charismatic pop artist, and this compilation certainly is worth a listen, but don`t expect the magic of his earlier years. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Already an established star in Jamaica by the time of "Wonderful World, Beautiful People," his first international hit, Jimmy Cliff was, for many, the face of reggae in the years before the advent of Bob Marley. This volume of THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION series contains a well-chosen variety of songs from the singer`s heyday in the late `60s and early `70s.Cliff`s under-appreciated protest song, "Viet Nam," is here, as are a trio of better-known songs from the seminal reggae movie THE HARDER THEY COME, including his version of "You Can Get It If You Really Want," originally a hit for Desmond Dekker. "Bongo Man" is a percussion-heavy venture into Rasta territory (interestingly for a reggae singer, Cliff is a Muslim), while his version of Cat Stevens` "Wild World," produced by the songwriter, predated Stevens` own hit release. While it`s by no means an exhaustive compilation, THE BEST OF… highlights both Cliff`s songwriting abilities and his skill at spanning both reggae and pop worlds. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
