Their first album, though, released at the tail end of the hippie era, finds them still hanging onto vestiges of both psychedelia and even folk-rock. "Hurry on Sundown," an acoustic strumfest left over from leader Dave Brock`s busking days, is as far as one can imagine from the Hawkwind that fans would come to know. The rest of the record, extended improvisations built around simple, riff-based structures, sounds like a lysergically enhanced collision between Can and contemporaneous Pink Floyd. While all the electronic bells and whistles had yet to be firmly affixed to the Hawkwind spaceship, the mindset of these cosmic warriors was already very clearly focused on the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Hawkwind – Best Of Friends & Relations $18.79 Drawn from the three vinyl volumes of Friends & Relations, this CD collection rounds up 16 of the original 24 songs and, while one can certainly question the decision that saw Robert Calvert`s "Widow Song" and Nik Turner`s "Man with the Golden Arm" numbered among the absentees, still the collection was far-reaching enough to satisfy most tastes. As expected, the highlights are those delivered by the artists closest to Hawkwind — saxophonist Nik Turner`s Inner City Unit turn in the tremendous "Raj Neesh," Dave Brock delivers "Motherless Children," while five tracks are by Hawkwind themselves. As with so much else in the Hawkwind archive, subsequent reissues and compilations have taken something of the magic away from this collection. Hawkwind`s ability to forge their own path, yet remain open to incorporating new styles of music that grew up in their wake, is legendary, and never more apparent than on this double album. Originally released in 1996 and recorded live during the band`s 1995 Alien 4 tour, this is not the sound of a 25-year-old band limping around stage lost in space and time, but a defiant celebration of everything Hawkwind had accomplished and were still set to do. Simultaneously embracing the contemporary electronic scene and the omnipresent long-haired rockers, the band burns brightly at both ends; never has the group sounded so futuristic, yet so thoroughly modern. The much revisited "Death Trap" is a revelation, a storming rendition boasting all the hyper-energy of Mot¿rhead and the spit and fire of first-wave punk; this is what early Ultravox aspired to (the two, song and band, are contemporaries) but never quite reached. A lush take on "Wastelands" was an equal object lesson to post-punkers and the new-breed electro bands, gorgeously shadowed and providing the perfect intro to the even spacier "Are You Losing Your Mind?" until that number kicks into overdrive. It`s this phenomenal mix of punk rock fury and glorious, gilded electro soundscapes that perhaps best defines the band — and never more so than on the spectacular title track, a nearly ten-minute extravaganza that effortlessly melds together a plethora of styles and ages, a musical time capsule launched into outer space. In contrast, Hawkwind cheekily deconstruct "Silver Machine" down to its barreling R&B roots, time traveling back to the early days of rock & roll. Prophetically, the set ends with the Arabic-flavored "Assassins of Allah" whirling like dervishes through the shadows, grinning like wolves at their hapless victims, and sliding seamlessly into a ferocious "Space (Is Their Palestine)." In today`s climate, the final pair of songs is like a punch to the gut. All these years on, this two-disc set still can take your breath away. For longtime fans, however, there were still several surprises, as the solid mass of earlier band lineups opened out to almost virtuosic proportions. With one eye surely fixed on the rapidly emerging New Wave of British Heavy Metal, guitarist Huw Lloyd Langton lays down guitar solos that the likes of "Silver Machine" and "Master of the Universe" had never previously imagined. Keyboard player Tim Blake (ex-Gong) was granted his own solo showcase mid-set — "Lighthouse," from his newly released New Jerusalem solo album, is included here, although he also performed the epic title track. Both newcomers went at least some way toward compensating for the recent loss of Bob Calvert — indeed, the sheer vivacity and variety of the band`s performance might not even have been possible had the idiosyncratic poet remained on board. The sound quality is not necessarily all that one would expect from a major-label release, although compared to Space Ritual, Hawkwind`s only previous in-concert set, that`s hardly surprising. Not only was it their worst-selling new album since their debut nine years earlier, but the sheer confusion that surrounded its release, and (erroneous) reports that it was largely comprised of outtakes and off-cuts, lent it almost black-sheep status. But its original CD reissue remains a powerhouse collectible, and this remastered repackage restores it to the front line of Hawkish attractions. No less than eight bonus tracks double the running time of the original disc through the inclusion of two cuts mysteriously substituted on the earlier CD (a studio version of "High Rise" and a briefly extended take on the title track), plus a clutch of demos and alternate takes and a period live performance of "Quark, Strangeness and Charm." Friends & Relations: The Very Best of Hawkwind/Rarities $13.92 Uncertain as to whether the then-nascent CD market could sustain full reissues of the three-volume Friends and Relations series, Flicknife opted instead to compile the “best” of the three onto a single CD. Fourteen of the original 24 songs made it on and, while one can certainly question the decision that saw Robert Calvert’s “Widow Song” and Nik Turner’s “Man With the Golden Arm” numbered among the absentees, still the collection was far-reaching enough to satisfy most tastes. As expected, the highlights are those delivered by the artists closest to Hawkwind itself — saxophonist Nik Turner’s Inner City Unit turn in the tremendous “Raj Neesh,” Dave Brock delivers “Motherless Children,” while five tracks by Hawkwind themselves include the blinding “Valium Ten.” ~ Dave Thompson, All Music Guide |

With Lemmy`s hard-lined guitar playing and Del Dettmar`s synthesizer stabs, tracks like "Space Is Deep" and "The Watcher" are infused with elaborate instrumental meanderings in perfect Hawkwind fashion. The longer tracks, both "Brainstorm" and "Time We Left This World Today," have Lemmy getting settled in the band`s extraordinary milieu, but end up being the album`s strongest cuts. There`s a harder feel to the songs all the way through, with the guitar and drums coming to the forefront ahead of Dik and Mik`s "generators" and "hot electronics." Although the ensemble often garnered comparisons to Pink Floyd, Hawkwind was far more aggressive than Waters, Gilmour, and company, charging through a potent, freeform set of cosmic freakouts (the trippy "Earth Calling") and rumbling metal ("Lord of Light" sounds like Black Sabbath in lunar orbit). While the entire outing is stellar, the British space-rock group really hits a stride during the epic "Orgone Accumulator," which settles into a deep, acid groove. Although the spoken-word segments (most notably a recitation of sci-fi/fantasy author Michael Moorcock`s "Black Corridor" by vocalist/poet Bob Calvert) might not suit everyone, SPACE RITUAL endures as both a document of its era and one of Hawkwind`s finest releases. Hawkwind – Quark, Strangeness and Charm [Bonus CD] $27.7 QUARK: STRANGENESS AND CHARM contains an 8-song CD and a 150-page book, QUEENS OF DELIRIA, written by Michael Butterworth based on an idea by Michael Moorcock.Hawkwind: Dave Brock, Robert Calvert.Audio Mixer: Ben Wiseman.Recording information: Rockfield Studios, Monmouthshire.Author: Dave Brock.Hot on the heels of two decidedly un-Hawkwind-y singles; following in the footsteps, too, of the defiantly transitory Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music album, Quark Strangeness and Charm was the first full flowering of Hawkwind`s newly honed drive towards brittle pop, sharp wit, and crystal-clear intent — attributes that, if they`d ever existed in the past, had been entirely overwhelmed by the sheer grandeur of the space rock rocket blast. Now it was the propulsive riffs and deep space echoes that were held in abeyance, and Quark opened as it meant to go on, with "Spirit of the Age"`s tight keyboards, unobtrusive washes, and the utterly captivating — if totally skewed — story of love across the light years. It is hard to visualise just how shocking the change must have been to loyal fans of the era; how they must have trembled before the electrifying jolt of concise lyricism and accessible melodies. Airplay followed, and the band even made their first mainstream U.K. TV appearance in some five years, performing the new album`s title track on Marc Bolan`s teatime TV pop show. Robert Calvert wore an aviator`s helmet and carried a stuffed falcon on one hand, odd apparel indeed for an ode to Albert Einstein`s lack of luck with the ladies. Or maybe not so odd, after all. A handful of songs fed back into the traditional Hawkwind mythos — the post-apocalyptic "Damnation Alley," the near-industrial instrumental "Forge of Vulcan," and the weary, dream-is-over nostalgia of "Days of the Underground." "Hassan I Sabha," an epic of Middle Eastern terrorist rhetoric, even recalled the prosaic realities of the old favorite "Urban Guerilla," although a haunting Arabic refrain and instrumentation catapulted it to a different realm regardless. Bassist Lemmy Kilmister had been fired after a drug bust the year before, and the band had been forced to scramble for a replacement, eventually hiring ex-Pink Fairies member Paul Rudolph. What`s more, the band had just released a series of successful, landmark proto-heavy metal albums with Kilmister, and the pressure to follow them up was sizable. It was fairly predictable, then, that Astounding Sounds was significantly lighter and less focused than previous records. Unfortunately, that also meant it was less interesting as well. Most of the album consists of moderately forceful hard rock, dense by most standards but nowhere near as corrosive as earlier Hawkwind albums. "Kerb Crawler," frontman Dave Brock`s ode to his car, is a rollicking party tune, and the closing instrumental, "Chronoglide Skyway," is a lush, beautiful epic, but these are the only standouts. The remaining tracks are pleasant enough, but tend to blend into one another. Lyrically, the album is far quirkier, thanks to wordsmith Bob Calvert`s idiosyncrasies. Whether saluting a certain cash crop in "Reefer Madness" or claiming to be a werewolf in "Steppenwolf," Calvert tries hard to keep the album alive. Unfortunately, the music lacks the necessary punch to make these songs more than mildly amusing.
