The “Golden Age” referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era’s musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can’t encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany’s of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches her…

Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald. As a label, the U.K.`s Proper does a pretty decent job of assembling a great cross-section of tracks, decent sound, and fairly annotated notes (though labels names seldom if ever appear either in liner notes or in track notations, only catalog number…hmmmm) all for a really great price. Hardcore fans of most artists will either have most or all of the material in their boxes, but those curious enough to look deeper into an artist than a single- or double-disc hits package will want to investigate Proper`s catalog. This set of Fats Waller material covers the years 1922 -1943, virtually his entire professional career. Each disc has its own title and runs basically chronologically, from his solo work through his many ensembles. This is a laymen`s collection, and is hardly exhaustive of any period, rather merely representative. True fans will want to seek out the RCA sets which are exhaustive in their research, presentation and execution. This is a fine introductory package, but that`s it. ~ Thom Jurek Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Fats Waller - Performance [4/27] *

Fats Waller – Performance [4/27] *

Liner Note Author: Scott Yanow.Thomas "Fats" Waller was the complete entertainer during the Depression years, conveying a constant joyous presence as a singer, pianist, and organist, and as a superb songwriter — his "Ain`t Misbehavin`," for instance, is a timeless classic. Arguably his best work was done for Victor in 1934 and 1935, but Waller was always a steady performer, and the radio transcriptions on this two-disc set — recorded between 1931 and 1943 — are as delightful as anything else he ever recorded, and maybe even more so, thanks to his warm song introductions and occasional spoken asides; he introduces "Ain`t Misbehavin`" here by saying "Ladies and gentlemen, this is just to let you know that I paid my alimony, and I ain`t misbehavin`." Everything presented here is of a piece, full of a calm and sprightly joy, and tracks like his beautifully hushed interpretation of "Tea for Two" are nothing less than stunning. Again, Waller`s studio work for Victor is the place to start with this marvelous musician, but this set adds a kind of live intimacy to what he did in the studio. It feels like you`re right there, and it`s a wonderful party. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Months earlier, Hyman performed 15 Fats Waller songs on the Bosendorfer 2905E reproducing piano in New York. A computer floppy disc of the date was sent to California where it was recorded direct to CD. But more important than the technology involved is the music itself. Sometimes Hyman seems to take these pieces a little too seriously, treating "African Ripples" and "Viper`s Drag" as if they were classical music but, to his credit, his treatment of the Waller compositions (mixing in the familiar with obscurities such as an enthusiastic "I`m Goin` To See My Ma" and a very complex version of "Bach Up To Me") does not attempt to copy Fats` style. A surprisingly uptempo version of "Stealin` Apples" and a thoughtful rendition of "Ain`t Misbehavin`" are among the highpoints. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Fats Waller - Complete Victor Piano Solos

Fats Waller – Complete Victor Piano Solos

$34.64

Thomas "Fats" Waller was the first jazz organist. He also helped to develop and establish the style of music commonly known as swing; was possessed of an outrageous sense of humor; sang however the hell he felt like singing, and made a point of cutting up whenever possible, particularly when he had to navigate a seemingly endless stream of Tin Pan Alley lyrics. All of his traits and accomplishments sometimes seem to obscure what is perhaps the most important and enduring aspect of Fats Waller — he was a gifted and powerfully expressive pianist who learned his craft from the originators of the Harlem stride style: James P. Johnson, Willie "The Lion" Smith and Luckey Roberts. Seldom have Waller`s major piano solos been made available en masse to the public for any length of time. These three-minute nougats of wordless wonderment popped up between clusters of ensemble and vocal tracks during the LP era, adding significant depth to the RCA Victor Vintage series in particular. A 1977 Bluebird.double LP (containing 33 selections) presented most of the master takes recorded between 1929 and 1941, and a follow-up Bluebird double CD (40 selections) appeared in 1991 bearing the title Turn on the Heat. Both of these compilations disappeared after awhile, leaving the public to search through chronologies and compilations or to remain altogether ignorant of Waller`s pianistic prowess. Definitive`s 2006 double-CD reissue of the Complete Victor Piano Solos (with a whopping 52 selections) is the best compilation of its kind. The producers responsible for this package deserve highest praise for having assembled these precious recordings in an unprecedented chronological compendium. Beginning with the gutsy 1927 stomp "Blue Black Bottom" (which did not make it onto the 1977 LP two-fer), this edition omits Waller`s two very first recordings, a pair of piano solos cut for the Okeh label in October of 1922. It does include all of the significant Victor solos with six alternate takes, and surpasses Turn on the Heat by dealing in the six-movement "London Suite" and six exquisite lesser-known radio transcriptions, including a gorgeous three-minute rumination on a theme from Faust, Charles Gounod`s opera of 1859. These solos represent and reveal the very heart of Waller, and a significant portion of the collective soul of all humanity. If there were to be one Fats Waller album, or one jazz album, or one of a handful of sound recordings to speak for the world, this is it. It`s that important, it`s that beautiful, it`s that essential. Honest to goodness. ~ arwulf arwulf Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

This 1971 album was never even released in the U.S., and remains one of the rarest albums in the Domino discography; in fact, we had a hard time even tracking down the album art! Circumstances surrounding its recording are also murky—believed to have been made some years earlier, it reunited Fats with his old producer Dave Bartholomew, and showcased the legend at his relaxed, confident best. Jimmy Smith (Jazz) – Plays Fat Waller (Blue Note) [9/8] *

$11.97

Personnel: Jimmy Smith (organ); Quentin Warren (guitar); Donald Bailey (drum).Playing piano-style single-note lines on his Hammond B-3 organ, Jimmy Smith revolutionized the use of the instrument in a jazz combo setting in the mid-`50s and early `60s, and this piano approach makes him a natural to adapt the piano tunes associated with Fats Waller to the B-3, which is what he did at the January 23, 1962, session that is represented here (Waller, by the way, was no stranger to the organ himself, and recorded several sides on the instrument). Working with guitarist Quentin Warren and his longtime drummer Donald Bailey (who worked with Smith throughout his Blue Note years), Smith brings his amazing rapid runs to Waller standards "Ain`t Misbehavin`" and "Honeysuckle Rose," and gives "Ain`t She Sweet" a wonderfully warm and soulful groove. It`s fairly typical Smith, who careens, bolts, stutters, glides, and flashes notes all over the place at a frequently breathless pace, doing what he always does, which is being Jimmy Smith at the organ. That`s what you want, and that`s what you get here. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

But this reissue delivers over twice the tracks of the original LP issue, with four edited alternate takes from the same session, plus seven more tracks of Waller material recorded by Armstrong in the 1920s and `30s. The mid-`50s was a fertile time for Armstrong and coupled with the `20s and `30s bonus tracks, this makes for a stellar overall package.
