The greatest of the Harlem stride pianists, he composed hundreds of songs, he led a band that made over 400 recordings, and he wrote several Broadway shows. Waller's gargantuan appetites have been celebrated in anecdotes and earlier biographies. He is seen by jazz historians as a man of immense musical talent that was never fulfilled. In this fully revised and updated biography of Waller, Alyn Shipton re-examines his career, arguing that his talents as a songwriter, show composer, and brilliant recording and broadcasting artist have not been fully appreciated. In a newly written final chapter, there is a comprehensive survey of Waller's recordings as they have been reissued for the CD era.

Satch Plays Fats: The Music of Fats Waller $8.98 Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller only worked together twice, briefly in 1925 in Erskine Tate's band and four years later in the New York revue Connie's Hot Chocolates. But Waller made an indelible enough impression for Satchmo to record the tribute album Satch Plays Fats: The Music of Fats Waller in 1955 when such ideas were new. The original nine-track lineup forms the centerpiece of the reissue, with Armstrong ably supported by his All-Stars on such classics as "Honeysuckle Rose," "Squeeze Me," and "Ain't Misbehavin'." But this reissue delivers over twice the tracks of the original LP issue, with four edited alternate takes from the same session, plus seven more tracks of Waller material recorded by Armstrong in the 1920s and '30s. The mid-'50s was a fertile time for Armstrong and coupled with the '20s and '30s bonus tracks, this makes for a stellar overall package. Fats Waller: Sixteen Great Piano Solos $8.99 While seasoned Fats Waller devotees may need to adjust to these solos so closely based upon transcribed Fats Waller performances, Posnak does justice to the Waller legacy by working his way through a large handful of classic Waller melodies. What makes this differ from many existing jazz piano tributes to Waller is the problem of timing, as such close adherence to the original solos automatically invites comparison, and Waller's sense of time is quite different from Posnak's. There are occasional moments where just the fraction of a pause or a lack of concision causes changes to occur in the propulsive dynamic of the piece. This in no way invalidates or downgrades the album as a whole; nobody can sound exactly like Fats Waller except for Fats Waller. In an age when comprehensive reissues of Waller's piano solos are only marginally available and rather prone to deletion, there is a need for this relatively recent re-creation of his wonderful piano works. Appearing as it does on the budget-priced, predominately classical Naxos label, what we have here is jazz being treated like chamber music. So maybe we shouldn't be expecting Posnak to interject very much of his own personality into the proceedings. Does he swing? Why, yes he does, and he is essentially collaborating with the spirit of Fats Waller. For this we should all be grateful. "Alligator Crawl" works exceptionally well. "Clothesline Ballet" is given a fresh countenance. "Handful of Keys" comes out clean. Posnak doesn't play as quickly or effortlessly as Waller, but he doesn't have to. Sometimes Hyman seems to take these pieces a little too seriously, treating "African Ripples" and "Viper`s Drag" as if they were classical music but, to his credit, his treatment of the Waller compositions (mixing in the familiar with obscurities such as an enthusiastic "I`m Goin` To See My Ma" and a very complex version of "Bach Up To Me") does not attempt to copy Fats` style. Fats Waller - Complete Victor Piano Solos $33.24 Thomas "Fats" Waller was the first jazz organist. He also helped to develop and establish the style of music commonly known as swing; was possessed of an outrageous sense of humor; sang however the hell he felt like singing, and made a point of cutting up whenever possible, particularly when he had to navigate a seemingly endless stream of Tin Pan Alley lyrics. All of his traits and accomplishments sometimes seem to obscure what is perhaps the most important and enduring aspect of Fats Waller -- he was a gifted and powerfully expressive pianist who learned his craft from the originators of the Harlem stride style: James P. Johnson, Willie "The Lion" Smith and Luckey Roberts. Seldom have Waller`s major piano solos been made available en masse to the public for any length of time. These three-minute nougats of wordless wonderment popped up between clusters of ensemble and vocal tracks during the LP era, adding significant depth to the RCA Victor Vintage series in particular. A 1977 Bluebird.double LP (containing 33 selections) presented most of the master takes recorded between 1929 and 1941, and a follow-up Bluebird double CD (40 selections) appeared in 1991 bearing the title Turn on the Heat. Both of these compilations disappeared after awhile, leaving the public to search through chronologies and compilations or to remain altogether ignorant of Waller`s pianistic prowess. Definitive`s 2006 double-CD reissue of the Complete Victor Piano Solos (with a whopping 52 selections) is the best compilation of its kind. The producers responsible for this package deserve highest praise for having assembled these precious recordings in an unprecedented chronological compendium. Beginning with the gutsy 1927 stomp "Blue Black Bottom" (which did not make it onto the 1977 LP two-fer), this edition omits Waller`s two very first recordings, a pair of piano solos cut for the Okeh label in October of 1922. It does include all of the significant Victor solos with six alternate takes, and surpasses Turn on the Heat by dealing in the six-movement "London Suite" and six exquisite lesser-known radio transcriptions, including a gorgeous three-minute rumination on a theme from Faust, Charles Gounod`s opera of 1859. These solos represent and reveal the very heart of Waller, and a significant portion of the collective soul of all humanity. If there were to be one Fats Waller album, or one jazz album, or one of a handful of sound recordings to speak for the world, this is it.
