Unhalfbricking $4.17 Fairport Convention was the most accomplished band in the late-’60s British folk-rock scene, and a combination of musical passion and whimsy makes Unhalfbricking one of its very best albums. Fairport’s standout members were singer Sandy Denny and guitarist Richard Thompson. Both shine on Denny’s haunting “Autopsy,” with its sinuously melancholy melody making a perfect bed for a Thompson guitar sol… |

Then and Now: The Best of Fairport Convention $11.99 Metro’s Then and Now: The Best of Fairport Convention collects studio performances from 1982 to 1996 as well as live recordings from that era. These live recordings, taken from the band’s annual Cropredy festivals/reunions, feature some of the songs that will be most familiar to casual Fairport Convention fans, such as “Who Knows Where the Time Goes?” and “Meet on the Ledge,” as well as a cover of Dylan’s “Si Tu Dois Partir.” However, the collection does feature a good amount of highlights from the group’s later career, such as “The Hiring Fair,” “Wat Tyler,” “Expletive Delighted,” “Red and Gold,” and “All Your Beauty,” as well as renditions of traditional songs like “The Youngest Daughter.” While this probably isn’t the best entry point into Fairport Convention’s long, tangled career, Then and Now: The Best of Fairport Convention works well as an overview of the group’s later years. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide |

Fairport Convention – Unhalfbricking $18.98 Fairport Convention: Sandy Denny (vocals); Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol (guitar, background vocals); Ashley Hutchings (bass); Martin Lamble (drums).Additional personnel: Dave Swarbrick (fiddle, mandolin); Ian Matthews, Marc Ellington (vocals); Trevor Lucas (triangle).Fairport Convention: Dave Swarbrick (fiddle). The transitional album before Fairport Convention invented folk rock with Liege And Lief, on this album they stretch out on longer numbers and introduce Dave Swarbrick, who plays some particularly fine fiddle on the lengthy `A Sailor`s Life`. Richard Thompson continued to mature with `Genesis Hall` and `Cajun Woman`. Equally impressive is Sandy`s beautiful voice on her stellar composition `Who Knows Where Time Goes`. Dylan abounds with three songs and `Percy`s Song` is a highlight. To round it up, a UK hit single, shock horror, with Dylan`s `Si Tu Dois Partir`. Also a bold move for a little-known band was not having their name on the album sleeve. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Fairport Convention – Full House $14.83 Fairport Convention: Simon Nicol, Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar); Dave Swarbrick (vocals, fiddle); Dave Pegg (bass); Dave Mattacks (drums). After the breathtaking LEIGE AND LEIF, Fairport Convention was dealt what seemed an insurmountable blow when singer Sandy Denny quit. However, the remaining four were seasoned veterans at wrestling disaster from the jaws of a tiger. FULL HOUSE may not have been what the group envisioned at the record`s outset, or what fans expected, but the results reveal another creative high point for the acclaimed folk-rockers.This incarnation of Fairport Convention was their first without a female voice (and, with the exception of Denny`s brief return in the mid-seventies, they would remain that way henceforth). Still, barring the non-singing drummer Dave Mattacks, they possessed a quartet of sympathetically harmonic singers. The writing team of guitarist Richard Thompson and fiddler Dave Swarbrick came up with a trio of classics in "Walk Awhile, " "Sloth, " and "Doctor of Physick, " but it was a teaming that was to prove short-lived, as Thompson departed before the next studio album. They did however make one trip to the USA and are captured live on their follow-up release HOUSE FULL. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Fairport Convention:maidstone 1970 $12.99 This film, directed and restored by renowned British film director Tony Palmer, captures the band at the Maidstone Fiesta during the summer of 1970 as they run through their set of the time which included various jigs and reels and the songs Sir Patrick Spens and Now Be Thankful. This line up was, and still is, considered one of the key line ups of Fairport Convention: Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar), Dave Swarbrick (vocals, fiddle, mandolin), Dave Pegg (vocals, bass guitar, mandolin), Dave Mattacks (drums, percussion), and Simon Nicol (vocals, guitar, electric dulcimer). Apart from the footage contained on this DVD, the Full House line up were never filmed commercially until reunions at the bands regular Cropredy Festival years later. This film also features two songs from Matthews’ Southern Comfort, the band led by former Fairport Convention member Ian Matthews. Matthews’ Southern Comfort would also go on to have a massive hit single with a cover of the Joni Mitchell song Woodstock in late 1970. The DVD also includes bonus footage of an exclusive interview filmed in spring 2007 with director Tony Palmer where he explains how he first met Fairport Convention and his thoughts on the band and the film over thirty five years later. This interview is a rare insight into the workings of one of the most unique and treasured of Britain’s bands. |

The quintessential British folk-rock band of the 1960s, Fairport Convention distinguished itself by basing its sound on traditional British folk, but transforming it with a modern sensibility and the superb musicianship of the band`s members. That alchemy is still in evidence decades later in these charged performances that include some of the band`s best-loved tunes. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Fairport Convention – Moat On The Ledge $18.98 Fairport Convention officially disbanded in 1979, only to become the hosts of a yearly folk festival/reunion concert every August in England. This album is taken from their August 15, 1981 show, featuring core original Fairport members Simon Nicol and Richard Thompson plus original female singer Judy Dyble, plus later members Dave Swarbrick, Dave Pegg, Dave Mattacks, and Bruce Rowland, and it`s a good recapitulation of the band`s style, with such numbers new to their repertoire as Bob Dylan`s "Country Pie" and Thompson`s "Woman or a Man." The presence of Dyble alone was something of a history lesson for newer fans, most of whom were scarcely aware of her participation in the group at the start, prior to Sandy Denny`s joining — Dyble even had to be introduced to the audience and her significance explained. And as with most of these "mega-Fairport" concerts, the cohesion of the players seems startling, considering the number of layers of different lineups and generations represented on-stage — Thompson`s presence is prominent, however, through his guitar playing and the raw, lean quality that his instrument brings to a performance that should have sounded a bit bloated, given the sheer number of musicians. It`s precisely that quality that was missing from the band`s official live release A Fairport Live Convention and its remixed version (Live Convention), and helps make this reunion so rewarding, capturing an attribute of the early band`s work that only the oldest fans ever got to hear on-stage. Dyble`s presence is also welcome, and the repertory — which ranges across the group`s history and extends out to folk and rock & roll standards — is a delight as well. ~ William Ruhlmann & Bruce Eder Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Fairport Convention – Liege & Lief $9.98 Fairport Convention: Sandy Denny (vocals); Simon Nicol, Richard Thompson (guitar); Dave Swarbrick (violin, viola); Ashley Hutchings (bass); Dave Mattacks (drums).Personnel: Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, Simon Nicol (vocals, guitar); Dave Swarbrick (vocals, mandolin, violin, viola); Ashley Hutchings (vocals, bass guitar); Dave Mattacks (drums). The advertisements for Fairport Convention`s epoch-making fourth album ran: "the first (literally) British folk rock LP ever." While that`s not (literally) true, LIEGE & LIEF created the template for all subsequent recordings in that style. It also represented a catharsis for the band, which reconvened after a traumatic road accident that killed drummer Martin Lamble. Once again focused and with redoubtable folk fiddler Dave Swarbrick now permanently involved, Fairport threw themselves into the electrification of ballads, myths, and rollicking jigs. The results were both innovative and stimulating. The union was blessed. If you sat down and tried to imagine a dream folk-rock band, it still would not match the potential here. From the lusting pace of "Matty Groves" to the tender cooing of "Crazy Man Michael," Sandy Denny`s voice and Richard Thompson`s virtuosic guitar are the perfect conduits for this milestone, which has been imitated a thousand times, but never equalled. Fairport Convention – Jewel In The Crown $18.98 Fairport Covention: Simon Nicol (vocals, acoustic guitar, acoustic & electric 12-string guitars); Maartin Allcock (acoustic & electric guitars, acoustic 12-string guitar, lap steel guitar, mandolin, mandola, bouzar, accordion, piano, electric piano, keyboards, fretless bass, bodhran, tambourine, talking drum, triangle, background vocals); Dave Pegg (electric guitar, mandolin, acoustic, electric & fretless basses, background vocals); Ric Sanders (violin); Dave Mattacks (electric piano, organ, glockenspiel, drums, log drum, sea drum, crotales, tambourine, maracas).Additional personnel: Tracey Bullard (bell, background vocals).Recorded at Woodworm`s Studio, Oxfordshire, England. Includes liner notes by Julie Matthews, Steve Tilston, Maartin Allcock, Ben Bennion, Ralph McTell, Jez Lowe, Huw Williams, Ric Sanders, Rob Beattie and Clive Gregson.Remastered rerelease. This album marks Fairport Convention`s return to the recording studio for their first new album in five years. With their line-up a decade strong (the longest grouping since the band formed in 1967), they come up with a stunning testament to the strengths that have endeared them to fans over the years. They also prove that they still thrive on playing as a band.JEWEL IN THE CROWN adheres to their now-standard mixture of centuries-old British Isle jigs and reels and contemporary rock. They scamper happily from traditional numbers to songs by such contemporary writers as Leonard Cohen, Ralph McTell, and Clive Gregson. Doing so seamlessly, and leaving its own formidable mark in the process, is this band`s magic. It is the gift that positions Fairport Convention at the forefront of this tradition. Multi-instrumentalist Martin Allcock`s "A Surfeit of Lampreys" is a gem that sums up their powers in a stunning way–it rocks hard with one foot in the `90s and another tapping away in a century long gone. Fairport Convention – Babbacombe Lee $14.83 BABBACOMBE LEE is the remastered reissue of UK folk rock band Fairport Convention`s 1971 release and includes two extra tracks. The group`s only concept album (similar in some ways to the Pretty Things` S.F. Sorrow), built around the life story of John "Babbacombe" Lee, a Victorian-era condemned murderer. Lee`s story, from his boyhood poverty to his time in the Royal Navy, his being invalided out and forced to work in the service of Miss Keyes, to her murder and his sentence of death, and the failure of the gallows three times, is told in song, and all but one of those songs are originals. The all-male Fairport seldom sang better, nor did the post-Thompson band ever play with more panache, and some of the songs are beautiful — but a few are lugubrious, and as with most other concept albums, the fit between the songs and the larger subject ultimately isn`t entirely comfortable for the listener. All of the material was confusing because the group, for some reason, never put titles on the individual songs, instead stringing them together in longer sections. The critics loved it, but the listeners stayed away in droves for the first time since the band`s debut album. ~ Bruce Eder Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Fairport Convention – Fairport Convention (+4 Bonus Tracks) (Remastered) $14.53 Fairport Convention: Ian Matthews, Judy Dyble (vocals), Simon Nicol, Richard Thompson (guitar), Ashley "Tyger" Hutchings (bass), Martin Lamble (drums).German digitally remastered import. Includes four bonus songs.A couple of years down the road, Fairport Convention would define British folk-rock, but on its 1968 debut, its sound is split between traditional English folk and a contemporary, San Francisco influence. Tackling US underground pop hero Emitt Rhodes`s "Time Will Show the Wiser," they sound for all the world like a UK version of Jefferson Airplane, as Judy Dyble`s vocals blend tartly with those of Ian Matthews. The West Coast influence continues with a pair of Joni Mitchell tunes given a somewhat Byrds-like treatment, and even a version of trad folk tune "Jack O`Diamonds" owes more to US garage rock than to Martin Carthy. Still, no matter how closely they emulated US artists at this early stage, the nimble guitar work of the still-teenage Richard Thompson was already the crucial element that gave the group its own distinctive signature. Fairport Convention – House Full: Live At The La Troubadour $10.43 Fairport Convention: Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar, dulcimer); Simon Nicol (vocals, mandolin); Dave Swarbrick (vocals, violin); Dave Pegg (bass, mandolin); Dave Mattacks (drums).Recorded live at The Troubadour, Los Angeles, California on September 4, 5, and 6, 1970.British remastered version on compact disc1970 found Fairport Convention reduced to a quartet after the departure of their singer Sandy Denny. They decided not to replace her and recorded FULL HOUSE, a ferocious blend of high intensity rock dynamics with traditional British Isle fiddle-filled forms. With accolades accumulating for both FULL HOUSE and its predecessor, the beloved LEIGE AND LEIF, another tour of America was mounted in the late summer.HOUSE FULL was recorded in Los Angeles at the Troubador. A fine companion piece to its alternately-ordered namesake, these eight songs are a revamped set of the live album released only in the UK. The line-up of the band is extremely impressive, but it was not to last. Richard Thompson left the following year before another studio album was made. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Fairport Convention – Meet on the Ledge: The Classic Years (1967-1975) $10.99 Fairport Convention includes: Simon Nicol (vocals, acoustic & electric 6 & 12-string guitar, banjo, dulcimer, violin); Dave Swarbrick (vocals, acoustic guitar, dulcimer, mandolin, fiddle, viola, autoharp); Dave Pegg (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, mandolin, violin, viola, bass); Richard Thompson (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, electric dulcimer); Jerry Donahue (vocals, acoustic, electric & slide guitar); Sandy Denny (vocals, acoustic guitar, acoustic & electric pianos); Richard Thompson (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, electric dulcimer); Judy Dyble (vocals, acoustic & electric autoharp, piano); Dave Mattacks (piano, keyboards, bass, drums, percussion); Ashley Hutchings (vocals, bass); Linda Peters (Linda Thompson) (vocals); Martin Lamble (violin, drums, percussion).Includes liner notes by Patrick Humphries.Digitally remastered by Chris Herles (PolyGram Studios).A superlative double-disc set, MEET ON THE LEDGE is the best Fairport Convention compilation, and one of the few that focuses entirely on the ever-shifting band`s most musically fruitful period. Although subtitled THE CLASSIC YEARS (1967-1975), the collection largely overlooks the original, semi-psychedelic pop lineup featuring singer Judy Dyble, including only their soaring electric cover of Joni Mitchell`s "Chelsea Morning." With track two, Dyble replacement Sandy Denny`s ballad "Fotheringay," the group`s signature blend of traditional British folk forms and electric rock & roll is already in place, and that combination remains on display through the next 30 tracks. The personnel changes every few songs, with fiddler Dave Swarbrick joining early, and Denny and lead guitarist Richard Thompson (who first revealed his immense songwriting gifts with the haunting title track) eventually leaving, but the soul of Fairport Convention remains constant. The set includes several rarities, but no previously unreleased tracks; those with the augmented CD reissues of the classic albums have the lot, making MEET ON THE LEDGE best for relative newcomers. Fairport Convention/Matthews Southern Comfort – Live In Maidstone 1970 [4/7] * $18.76 Finally released nearly 40 years after the fact, this is the audio companion to the concert DVD that captures Fairport Convention and Ian Matthews Southern Comfort (Matthews was an original Fairport member) live in 1970. The bulk of this brief-but-magical document features the legendary FULL HOUSE lineup of Fairport, with guitar god Richard Thompson and fiddle demon Dave Swarbrick trading fiery licks throughout. In other words, this is classic British folk-rock at its very finest. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Fairport Convention – Heyday: BBC Radio Sessions, 1968-1969 $10.87 HEYDAY is a set of 1968 BBC radio performances by Fairport Convention. The tracks were recorded after Sandy Denny had joined, but prior to the band`s tragic road accident that claimed the life of drummer Martin Lamble and shook the spirit of the band. These dozen songs show the band`s fascination with American music and songwriters (a fact that was also quite evident on their self-titled debut). With two formidable front-line singers, Denny and Ian Matthews, the band`s versions of songs by Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Gene Clark, Johnny Cash, the Everly Brothers and others are given strong and believable treatments. An early original by Richard Thompson shows him to still be under the spell of his record collection, but his guitar playing is already uniquely his own, a remarkable accomplishment for one not yet twenty years old. These songs are rich with the joy of a band glad to be playing together and in love with their material. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Fairport Convention – 25th Anniversary Concert [2007] $26.71 Personnel: Simon Nicol (vocals, acoustic guitar); Martin Allcock (vocals, electric guitar, keyboards); Jerry Donahue (vocals, electric guitar); Chris Leslie, Dave Pegg, Dave Swarbrick (vocals, fiddle); Bruce Rowland (vocals, washboard, tambourine); Robert Plant, Ashley Hutchings, Julianne Regan (vocals); Dave Mattacks (keyboards, drums); Ric Sanders (keyboards); Geoffrey Hughes (bodhran).Recording information: Cropredy Festival (08/14/1992-08/15/1992).Editor: Tim Matyear.Photographer: John Bright.Arrangers: Dave Swarbrick; Martin Allcock; Ric Sanders.Recorded live to DAT at a performance that had fiddler Chris Leslie filling in for Ric Sanders, who had injured himself in an accident involving a plate glass window (Sanders was able to provide keyboards, however), 25th Anniversary Concert was a festive outing with numerous guests (including Fairport founders Richard Thompson and Ashley Hutchings). The two-disc set ranges from the sublime (a ferocious, Boiled in Lead-style take of "Matty Groves") to the slightly surreal ("John Barleycorn" with the lyrics screwed up). The sound is unfortunately too bright and metallic, and the mix, taken from the soundboard, is sometimes atrocious, but trimming the highs helps with the former, while the latter, in the spirit of live shows, can simply be ignored. Not the best example of Fairport, but highly entertaining. [The CD was reissued in 2007.] ~ Steven McDonald Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Fairport Convention – Rising For The Moon (+4 Bonus Tracks) (Remastered) $12.98 Fairport Convention`s 1975 albums RISING FOR THE MOON marks the return of singer Sandy Denny to the folk collective`s fold.German version features four bonus tracks.Although there`s nothing here as overpowering as "Sailor`s Life" or "Sloth," this record is still a choice release, as Sandy Denny`s official return to Fairport. She wrote or co-wrote seven of its 11 songs, and dominates most of the others with her voice. This lineup (Denny, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Pegg, Jerry Donahue, Trevor Lucas, and Bruce Rowland, with Dave Mattacks — who quit partway through — drumming on some of the tracks) went for the gold with rock veteran Glyn Johns in the producer`s spot. The result was the only Fairport album done after the departure of Richard Thompson that doesn`t sound anemic in the electric guitar department. Some of the songs, especially the title track and "Restless," have the feel of compact, breezy pop/country-rock, reminiscent of the Eagles or Firefall, although it`s hard to imagine either of those groups turning in anything with the ethereal beauty of Denny`s performance on "White Dress" or "Dawn." Those songs and "Stranger to Himself" could easily have been on one of her solo albums. Others, like Trevor Lucas` "Iron Lion," sound almost like Fairport`s version of the Rolling Stones` "Dead Flowers." Only the Swarbrick/Pegg "Night-Time Girl" resembles Fairport`s established work from their earlier history. This was the last album and the last incarnation of Fairport Convention to present itself to the public as a contemporary rock group, and their last (apart from 1987`s In Real Time) release on a major label. Beyond this point, they became part of the folk revival circuit, albeit with a huge audience. (British import) ~ Bruce Eder Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Fairport Convention – Liege & Lief (+2 Bonus Tracks) (Remastered) $14.83 Fairport Convention: Sandy Denny (vocals); Simon Nicol, Richard Thompson (guitar); Dave Swarbrick (violin, viola); Ashley Hutchings (bass); Dave Mattacks (drums).Remastered 1969 album includes two bonus tracks. Fairport Convention – What We Did On Our Holidays (+3 Bonus Tracks) (Remastered) $14.83 Fairport Convention: Sandy Denny, Ian Matthews (vocals); Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol (acoustic & electric guitars); Ashley Hutchings (bass); Martin Lamble (drums).WHAT WE DID ON OUR HOLIDAYS is the original title of the album that wasreleased in the U.S. as FAIRPORT CONVENTION.German import is digitally remastered and contains three bonus tracks: non-LP b-side "Throwaway Street Puzzle," the unreleased "Some Sweet Day,"and rarity "You`re Gonna Need My Help."An album that revels in an embarrassment of influences which the band bind, making their own. This was the Fairport that ran with the psychedelic underground, flexing their muscles, a slumbering entity about to wake. This was their beatnik phase, producing such evergreens as Sandy Denny`s beautiful `Fotheringay`, the first tangible examples of electrified trad in `Nottamun Town` and `She Moves Through The Fair` – neither song, incidentally, British. More significantly, Richard Thompson began to move in his own mysterious way, gifting `Meet On The Ledge` which has since become their signature. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life and this collection adroitly exploits just that. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |
