Includes liner notes by David Ritz.Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios), except "Would It Make Any Difference," "Pay Back" and "Two Sides To Every Story" which were remixed to stereo from original 4-tracks.THE ESSENTIAL ETTA JAMES contains 2 CDs worth of recordings Etta James made for Chess Records between 1960-1975. Also included is a 16-page booklet with photos, interviews and track-by-track annotations. This is the definitive collection of Etta James`s career-defining work at Chess Records. Spanning two discs and 44 tracks, THE ESSENTIAL takes the listener chronologically from 1960`s heart-wrenching story-song "All I Could Do Is Cry" to 1975`s "Lovin` Arms." Newcomers will be impressed by what long-time fans have always known: James is a masterful vocalist capable of moving from airy, nuanced balladry to gutbucket, growling blues within the space of single measure. This range is amply represented on THE ESSENTIAL with string-sweetened ballads ("Trust in Me"), rave-up rockers ("Something`s Got a Hold on Me"), and soul workouts ("842-3089 [Call My Name]"). While the lion`s share of material comes from the early `60s, 1967`s "Tell Mama," recorded at the famed Muscle Shoals studio and possibly James`s best-known song, comes blazing out on the second disc. The singer`s skill at interpreting popular material can be heard too on Don Covay`s "You Got It," Otis Redding`s "Security," and three tunes by Randy Newman, including a deeply funky "You Can Leave Your Hat On." Whether accompanied by lush orchestrations or a full-tilt R&B band, James`s gritty, soulful voice never faltered, and this set brings a beautiful sampling of her achievements under one cover. Etta James - Best Of Etta James

Etta James – Best Of Etta James

$16.46

Etta James sings with controlled passion and conviction. She makes ordinary songs special; her full-throated deliveries and no-nonsense vocals create magic on stages and in recording studios. She could sing softly before rising to full rage, as she does on "All I Could Do Was Cry" (written by Billy Davis and Barry & Gwen Gordy). James` beau, Harvey Fuqua, left her and Chicago for Barry`s sister Gwen, who left Billy Davis and then moved to Chicago to produce records. A dramatic "Stop the Wedding" completes the saga. The scenario had all the intrigue of a mid-afternoon soap. She duets with Fuqua on "Spoonful," a cute love song. The Motown-ish "Push Over" proves James could have flourished at Hitsville U.S.A., but blues and standards were her calling. She shines on the Harptones` "A Sunday Kind of Love" and the heartfelt "At Last." James` "I`d Rather Go Blind" pioneered the amalgamation of R&B and Southern soul; the horns cry like funeral mourners. The pulsating "Tell Mama" was possibly the precursor to the tracks that Isaac Hayes and David Porter crafted for Sam & Dave and Otis Redding. James` first recording, the risqu\u0002 "Roll with Me Henry" (featuring Richard Berry), caused quite a stir. ~ Andrew Hamilton Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Etta James – Playlist: The Very Best of Etta James

$7.08

Buyer beware: this is not nearly "the very best of Etta James"; the title of this addition to Sony Legacy`s Playlist series is wildly misleading. James cut her best sides for Chess; that is the critical as well as the commercial view. In the late `90s and early part of the 21st century, she made a series of recordings for the Private Music and RCA imprints, and that`s where the music on this 14-track set comes from — including the version of "At Last" tacked on at the end, which is a live version from Burnin` Down the House. That is not to say that this music isn`t worth hearing or isn`t good; it`s all quite good. One complaint is that her killer ballads album Love`s Been Rough on Me is underrepresented here, but that`s life. This set should be considered an adjunct to Etta James` Chess sides. If one has her true greatest hits already, this is a wonderful counterpart to fill out the portrait of the artist, but it is not what it claims to be. ~ Thom Jurek Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Etta James - The Definitive Collection

Etta James – The Definitive Collection

$10.63

Personnel: Etta James. This excellent 2006 compilation presents many of the finest moments by R&B/soul singer Etta James. Given James`s bold, full-bodied vocals, she was a natural for the blues, but she made her biggest mark in the 1960s with lush, pop-tinged ballads such as the gorgeous "At Last" and the forlorn "All I Could Do Was Cry," both included here. Although HER BEST features many of the same songs, and THE ESSENTIAL JAMES is more extensive, THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION offers a remarkably wide selection, even including material from her 1994 Grammy-winning Billie Holiday tribute, MYSTERY LADY. Includes liner notes by Etta James.HEART OF A WOMAN was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.Heart of a Woman is a great idea for an album. Etta James chose 11 love songs from her favorite female singers — Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn, and Carmen McRae — augmenting the album with a new version of her signature song, "At Last." She has recorded several of these songs before (including Alice Cooper`s "Only Women Bleed," which inexplicably became a standard for both her and McRae), but the difference with Heart of a Woman is the context. Here, they`re put in a smooth jazz setting, masterminded by James, who has producer credit. There`s no denying that Etta James is a powerhouse, one of the finest blues singers of the 20th century, and she still possesses an exceptionally strong voice, robust and filled with passion. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. ROCKS THE HOUSE is the only live recording from Etta James` Chess recording career (late 1950s to mid 1960s).Personnel: Etta James (vocals); David Walker (guitar); Gavrell Cooper (tenor saxophone); Vonzell Cooper (organ); Marion Wright (bass); Freeman Brown, Richard Waters (drums).Recorded live at The New Era Club, Nashville, Tennessee on September 27 and 28, 1963. Originally released on Argo (4032). Includes liner notes by Ralph Bass and by Don Snowden.Digitally remastered by Paul Elmore (MCA Studios, North Hollywood, California).Personnel: Etta James (vocals); David T. Walker (guitar); Gavrell Cooper (tenor saxophone); Vonzell Cooper (organ); Richard Waters, Freeman Brown (drums).Audio Remasterer: Paul Elmore.Liner Note Authors: Don Snowden; Ralph Bass.Recording information: New Era Club, Nashville, TN (09/27/1963-09/28/1963).Editor: Ron Malo.Though the studio albums Etta James made for Chess in the 1960s usually had the blues singer surrounded by lush production and string-heavy arrangements, this live date finds her performing with only a rhythm section, organist, guitarist, and tenor saxophonist. The singer seems to respond to both the stripped-down setting and the enthusiastic audience with noticeable abandon. In fact, James the classy balladeer, a role she sometimes plays on her studio albums, is nowhere to be found on this blazing set. The only time the band slows down is on the tearjerker story-song "All I Could Do Is Cry" (though what the tune lacks in tempo it makes up for in emotional intensity). The rest of the set is straight-edged blues and R&B, including covers of some hits of the day, like "Money (That`s What I Want)" and Ray Charles`s "What`d I Say." Jimmy Reed`s "Baby What You Want Me To Do" (on which James does a growling, harmonica-imitating vocal solo) steps up the blues quotient, as does the band`s finale of Willie Dixon`s "I Just Want To Make Love to You," with James`s gospel-drenched pipes wailing all the while. ETTA JAMES ROCKS THE HOUSE indeed. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

This outing found a then 62-year old Peaches roaring over a crack band equally at home pumping punchy horns and a slinky groove into the Born Again-era Dylan nugget "Gotta Serve Somebody" and laying down a funky bed for O.V. Wright`s tasty "Don`t Let My Baby Ride." Not surprisingly, James`s strongest moments come on ballads like Ray Charles`s gospel-flavored "Come Back Baby" and Ann Peebles`s pleading "You`re Gonna Make Me Cry."This veteran vocalist easily slips into the swamp-rock pocket of CCR`s "Born On The Bayou" and rides herd over a particularly crisp reading of Big Mama Thornton`s oft-covered "Hound Dog." Even The Rolling Stones` disco anthem "Miss You" is given an even more lascivious twist by an undulating mid-tempo groove that replaces the dance beat with flamenco-like nuances and luscious sounding horns. Etta James – Blues to the Bone

Personnel: Etta James (vocals); Brian Ray (guitar, slide guitar); Josh Sklair, Bobby Murray (guitar); John "Juke" Logan (harmonica); Mike Finnegan (piano); Sametto James (bass guitar); Donto Metto James (drums).Liner Note Author: Lithoyfayne Pridgon.Duke Ellington spoke of certain things being "beyond category"–such a description suits singer Etta James. Since the 1950s, James has helped to set trends and adapted to them, applying her deep, dignified voice to jazz, blues, Southern soul, and pop balladry. BLUES TO THE BONE is James`s tribute to the blues, and it takes on well-worn genre standards and gives them a veritable new lease on life. James alternates between acoustic and electric renditions–"Lil` Red Rooster" becomes a country-tinged lamentation, and "Smokestack Lightnin`" gets a rare bare-bones treatment, just voice and acoustic guitar. "Got My Mojo Working" is a chugging, loping hunk of bravado, and "The Sky Is Crying" sounds like a storm about to break, James` voice the virtual definition of "soulful." Throughout, James sings the blues as one who has lived them, and her accompanists are a lean, mean, well-oiled machine, playing nary an excess note. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Etta James – Jazz [6/5]

$8.74

Personnel: Riley Hampton.Though generally classified as a blues singer, there is certainly something of the jazz chanteuse in Etta James. Her approach to phrasing is nuanced and precise, and though her tone never turns with the delicacy of Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald, her ability to remake a song in her own image is reminiscent of those singers. JAZZ collects James`s jazz recordings, which find the singer putting her indelible stamp on such gems as "Stormy Weather," "Don`t Get Around Much Anymore," and "Misty," among others. Most impressively, James never tries to sound "jazzy," but instead tackles each tune with her fundamental style, and pulls it off with absolute authority. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Soul mecca Muscle Shoals was the chosen recording site this time around and Wexler pulled out the stops by getting such famous names as Steve Cropper, Hank Crawford, and Lucky Peterson to back the great James. The material chosen also played to James` strengths and included material originally recorded by Wilson Pickett ("Ninety Nine and a Half [Won`t Do]"), Mable John ("You`re Taking up Another Man`s Place"), Al Green ("Love and Happiness"), and Ray Charles ("Nighttime is the Right Time").All these tracks are given their due thanks to Etta James` powerful vocals and soulful phrasing. Other highlights include a particularly vivid duet with original blue-eyed soul prodigy Steve Winwood on Allen Toussaint`s "Give It Up," and the delightfully ribald "Wet Match," in which a sassy Miss Peaches chastises a boastful lover who doesn`t quite measure up. Although THE RIGHT TIME deliberately returned to the southern soul of TELL MAMA, Etta James also showed off her blues chops with such steady scorchers as "I Sing the Blues" and "Down Home Blues." AT LAST!, her Chess debut, shows the formula working to fine effect, as it highlights the singer`s facility with different approaches including torchy balladry, jazz crooning, growling blues, and R&B shouting. She sounds equally at home on Willie Dixon stompers ("I Just Want To Make Love To You"), standards ("Stormy Weather"), and down-tempo soul workouts (the beautiful title track).James performs several duets with Moonglows vocalist (and then-boyfriend) Harvey Fuqua, including Dixon`s "Spoonful," the duo`s self-penned "My Heart Cries," and the chart-hit "If I Can`t Have You." Etta James - All the Way

Etta James – All the Way

$8.99

To the general good of the universe, Etta James was still going strong in 2006. ALL THE WAY is miles removed from the gritty, bluesy R&B James is best known for, and with its lush arrangements, smooth grooves, and dinner club vibe, the album is anything but raw. But none of this is to say that James has lost her touch; her voice is still expressive, rough-hewn, and passion-filled.James shows her familiarity with late-20th century pop here, offering renditions of John Lennon`s "Imagine," Prince`s "Purple Rain," Simply Red`s "Holding Back the Years," and Marvin Gaye`s "What`s Going On." The choice of material may seem a bit obvious, but James imbues each song with her world-weary grace. And with the mark of a true singing genius, she makes each song sound like a standard written solely for her. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Liner Note Author: Jackson Braider.Etta James has been showing people how it`s done for over 50 years now (her first single, "Roll with Me Henry," was tracked in 1955 when she was still a teenager), and her passionate, nuanced singing hasn`t diminished one bit in the 21st century. Her earliest sides were blues-inflected R&B and soul numbers, but starting in the early `90s she expanded her material to include the Great American Songbook, tackling with style songs by composers like the Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart, and Cole Porter, and elegant versions of songs by rock artists like John Lennon and Prince, always bringing a weary, gritty grace to the table. This two-disc compilation set features some of the best sides she`s recorded in the past two decades, including gems like her jazzy take on "Cry Me a River" and a heartbreaking version of "Try a Little Tenderness." But the heart of James` approach to business is the blues, as the wonderful set opener here, "The Blues Is My Business," states clearly, and her renditions collected here of Willie Dixon`s "Little Red Rooster" and John Lee Hooker`s "Crawlin` King Snake" are clear highlights in a collection filled to the brim with highlights. She`s not a diva — she`s the real deal. This summation of her past 20 years as a recording artist shows just how real she still is. ~ Steve Leggett Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Etta James – Time After Time

$6.13

Personnel: Etta James (vocals); Josh Sklair (guitar); Eddie Harris, Herman Riley (tenor saxophone); Ronnie Buttacavoli (trumpet, flugelhorn); Kraig Kilby (trombone); Cedar Walton (piano); John Clayton (bass); Paul Humphrey (drums); Donto Metto James (shakers).Recorded at Conway Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by David Ritz."I`ve been through it all," Etta James sings with conviction on "Don`t Go To Strangers." "I`m an old hand," she moans, "and I`ll understand if you go." With her big, lived-in voice, Etta James invites the listener to come on in and share some experiences best appreciated through an intermediary with worldly wisdom to come back alive and interpret things for those of us who`ve led more sheltered lives. By the end of this particular performance, Etta has discarded the polite conventions of the song and reached down to find some joy and pain that most assuredly was not gleaned second-hand.TIME AFTER TIME reprises the winning formula that made the legendary vocalist`s ascent into the world of Billie Holiday on MYSTERY LADY a Grammy Award winner. One of the grand dames of R&B and the blues, Etta James` performances always conveyed a palpable element of danger and rage, as if at any second things might get uncomfortably…real. So don`t sit too close if you can`t take the heat–bring your whole being or don`t bother to show.Which is the quality that makes this autobiographical synthesis of sophisticated jazz and low-down blues on TIME AFTER TIME so authentic. While these songs have been done a thousand times before, Etta James is such a master dramatist, she`s able to interpret them as something fresh and new. On "The Nearness Of You" she practically stutters over the intro and outro, conveying a sense of expectation and longing that reaches fruition in Herman Riley`s earthy tenor confession, and her final rejection of those "soft lights." Personnel: Etta James (vocals); Josh Sklair (guitar, dobro); Leo Nocentelli, Bobby Murray (guitar); Jimmy "Z" (saxophone, harmonica); Lee Thornburg (trumpet, trombone); Tom Poole (trumpet); Dave Mathews (keyboards); Mike Finnigan (Hammond B-3 organ); Sametto James (bass); Donto James (drums, percussion).Recorded at Fort Athens Studio, Riverside, California. Includes liner notes by Bob Merlis & Etta James.LIFE, LOVE & THE BLUES was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album.Etta James` fine self-produced LIFE, LOVE & THE BLUES touts itself as a straight blues album, the one Etta says she always wanted to record. This isn`t entirely accurate, since the smart choice of tunes here includes Al Green`s "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)" and Marvin Gaye`s "Inner City Blues." But why quibble with a legend, especially since she delivers the goods with such class and professionalism?By 1998, her voice had lost some of its upper purity but hardly any of its flexibility and force. She`s not riding any past glory as she steps forthrightly into Albert King`s "Born Under A Bad Sign" like she owns it, as well as modern blues classics like Willie Dixon`s "Spoonful" and "Hoochie Coochie Man (Gal)." Speaking of ownership, Etta co-wrote the title song – a smoldering statement of purpose cut with some fine slide acoustic work courtesy of her ace back-up guys, The Roots Band. Etta James – From the Heart [Slimline]

$7.08

Part of Legacy`s valentine-friendly FROM THE HEART series, this collection culls the most romantic songs from Etta James` catalog, dipping into different periods from the legendary singer`s career. Whether she`s belting out slow-burning R&B on the immortal "At Last," venturing into Otis Redding territory with "Try a Little Tenderness" and "I`ve Been Loving You Too Long," or getting jazzy on the standard "My Funny Valentine," James` peerless pipes are never less than a marvel, even on the cuts from her later recordings. Etta James – Love Songs

$9.15

Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (Universal Mastering Studios-West, North Hollywood, California).Recording information: 05/??/1960-12/06/1974.Arrangers: Al Poskonka; Riley Hampton.Drawn almost entirely from her Argo/Chess recordings of the `60s (although there are some cuts from the early `70s), Love Songs is a fine selection of romantic music from one of the greatest blues singers of her generation. There are hits here, highlighted by "At Last," but mood overrules chart position, so these 14 songs wind up setting a seductive atmosphere and maintaining it from beginning to end. It`s not essential for collectors, although some songs aren`t all that easy to come by elsewhere. Instead, it`s an album for casual fans, those who like James` style, especially when it`s presented in a romantic setting. For these listeners, it`s very worthwhile. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Aided by arranger Riley Hampton`s sweeping string arrangements, James`s early `60s material consisted of pop and R&B hits that were a mix of contemporary originals ("All I Could Do Was Cry," "My Dearest Darling") and classic standards ("Stormy Weather," "At Last"). Even throughout this phase of sophistication, James injected her earthy sexuality into a pair of Willie Dixon-penned blues covers–"Spoonful" and "I Just Want to Make Love to You," the latter of which was revived for a millennial ad campaign.By 1967, James was down in Muscle Shoals churning out gritty interpretations of Otis Redding ("Security") and Aretha Franklin ("Do Right Woman, Do Right Man"), while dabbling in country (David Houston`s "Almost Persuaded"). James`s all-too short foray into Philly soul ("Never Love") gave way to producer Gabriel Mekler`s attempts to make her a rock singer. James was equal to the challenge, and the remaining few tracks of this box set find her boldly mastering material by Randy Newman ("Sail Away"), Tracy Nelson ("Down So Low"), and W.C. Handy ("St. Louis Blues"). Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

It was a triumph simply to complete the record at all. But although James` life may have been in rough shape outside of the studio, she delivered a fairly strong set that fused forceful `70s soul arrangements with some rock (Randy Newman and John Kay both contribute compositions), jazz, and New Orleans R&B. Some of the material is routine, but there are some very strong cuts here, like a rousing "Sookie Sookie" and "Out on the Street Again," with its slightly sinister funk groove. "Feeling Uneasy," in fact, counts as one of the unsung highlights of her career, with a wrenching, near-wordless scat-moan vocal over a suitably languorous, melancholy blues-jazz arrangement. The CD reissue adds a couple of interesting bonus tracks: the 1975 single "Lovin` Arms," a good rootsy ballad, and a single edit of one of the tracks from the album, "Out on the Street Again." ~ Richie Unterberger Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Etta James – Greatest Gospel Hits, Vol. 2

$9.99

Personnel includes: Etta James (vocals); Jack Jackson, Stan Shulman, David Thompson (arranger). It hardly matters what Etta James sings, whether it be country, blues, soul, R&B, or even pop tunes; she puts a stamp on it. This super-budget second volume of her gospel "hits" — she never really had one let alone two CDs` worth — by the completely dodgy Curb label (they simply suck when it comes to reissues) is a solid collection not because it is compiled well, but because James could sing license plates and they`d still stir your soul. There are a number of traditional tunes — and Curb could get all semiotic and call the tunes themselves hits, even if they weren`t by James — along with readings of Edwin Hawkins` "Oh Happy Day" and Hank Williams` "I Saw the Light," backed by a gospel choir. ~ Thom Jurek Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Personnel: Etta James (vocals); Josh Sklair (guitar); Red Holloway (saxophone); Ronnie Buttacavoli (trumpet, flugelhorn); Kraig Kilby (trombone); Cedar Walton (piano); Tony Dumas (bass); Ralph Penland (drums, percussion).Recorded at Ocean Way Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by David Ritz.MYSTERY LADY: SONGS OF BILLIE HOLIDAY won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. The popular Etta James usually performs raunchy single-entendre blues, so this surprisingly subtle outing is a real change of pace. She sounds quite laid-back on a set of ballads associated with Billie Holiday and utilizes a jazz rhythm section led by pianist Cedar Walton plus three horn players, including the great Red Holloway on tenor and alto. James makes no attempts at exploring uptempo material or scatting, sticking to soulful interpretations of the classic ballads. Despite the lack of variety in tempos, the music is quite satisfying. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Etta James - Love Songs [RCA Victor/Legacy]

Etta James – Love Songs [RCA Victor/Legacy]

$7.99

Personnel: Etta James; Eddie Harris (saxophone); Cedar Walton (piano); Paul Humphrey (drums). Not to be confused with MCA`s 2001 collection of the same title, this 15-song RCA Victor set was released in 2006. Interestingly, the compilation focuses on James`s contemporary recordings (as opposed to her more celebrated material from the 1960`s) and leans heavily on her readings of old standbys from the Great American Songbook. James`s blues- and gospel-drenched voice still sounds great, though, and she shows she`s as capable of handling jazz gems like "Body and Soul" and "My Funny Valentine" as she is R&B faves like "Try A Little Tenderness." The result was her most accomplished album, on which her voice had been mixed to perfection, allowing her to sound strong on the previously distorted high notes. James was rightly seen in a different light as one of the great soul voices of all time as she belted out powerful tracks such as "The Love Of My Man" and "Watch Dog." Her slower numbers were equally arresting, including the wonderful "I`d Rather Go Blind." Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

The veteran soul/blues singer was only 16 when, in 1954, she made her first recordings for Modern records; she was 63 when this excellent live album was recorded at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, CA, in December 2001 — and it is obvious that vocally, she didn`t lose anything along the way. Backed by a tight and rock-solid band, James demonstrates that her big, full voice lost none of its richness between 1954 and 2001. The Los Angeles native sounds as vital as ever, and she has no problem going that extra mile on gutsy performances of "Something`s Got a Hold on Me," "I`d Rather Go Blind," "At Last," and other hits. For the most part, this is a soul concert; however, James makes a triumphant detour into electric urban blues on "I Just Want to Make Love to You" (one of the many Willie Dixon gems that Muddy Waters recorded for Chess in the `50s) and B.B. King`s "Rock Me, Baby." The veteran singer pleasantly surprises us with some unlikely medleys; "I Just Want to Make Love to You" is successfully combined with Steppenwolf`s "Born to Be Wild," and even more intriguing is her ability to unite the standard "My Funny Valentine" with two of Al Green`s `70s hits ("Love and Happiness" and "Take Me to the River"). Some longtime fans may be disappointed to learn that she doesn`t perform either "Tell Mama" or "Roll with Me, Henry," aka "The Wallflower"; regardless, Burnin` Down the House is an exciting and powerful document of James at 63. ~ Alex Henderson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. The two stars duet on Percy Mayfield`s "Please Send Me Someone to Love" before Etta closes the show with strong readings of "Lover Man" and "Misty."
