How much to sell Dizzy Gillespie autograph for?

I have a The Best Of Dizzy Gillespie record with an autograph of Dizzy on the front. It was my grandfathers record and has three written words before he signed his name. I can not read his handwriting, but I can read his signature. It was signed in 1987. I would like to sell it on ebay, how much should I ask for it? I tried to compare prices with other Dizzy autographs, but I could not find anything! If you know anything about autographs let me know!

Perhaps a starting price of 100 and go from there. If you have any interest begins at 50th

Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); Jon Hendricks (vocals); James Moody (alto & tenor saxophones, flute); Sleepy Matsumoto (tenor saxophone); Kenny Barron (piano); Chris White (bass); Rudy Collins (drums).Recorded live at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Monterey, California in 1963. Includes liner notes by Ross Firestone. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); James Moody (flute, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Kenny Barron (piano); Rudy Collins (drums).Photographer: Jerry Stoll.Translator: Michel Pencr\u0002ac`h.Before his 1963 performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, Dizzy Gillespie had already been actively involved in the influential project. As one of the first performers approached for the original 1957 lineup, Dizzy became a staple in the years to come. This set consists of eight uptempo, Latin and blues influenced jam sessions. "Dizzy Atmosphere," "Morning of the Carnival," "Desafinado," "Gee Baby Ain`t I Good to You" are all highlights of this thoroughly exuberant set. James Moody, who alternates between tenor and alto saxophone and flute, provides smoking solos throughout. Moody had recently rejoined Dizzy, having previously been a member his orchestra in the `40s. Hired at Moody`s request was 20-year-old pianist Kenny Barron, who was also beginning an important stint with Gillespie. Bassist Chris White and drummer Rudy Collins rounded out the rhythm section. Vocalist Jon Hendricks makes a guest appearance on the rowdy set finale "Vote Dizzy (Salt Peanuts) as Gillespie was in the midst of his famed presidential campaign. As a bonus, this torrid set also includes Dizzy`s relaxed witticisms intact at a time when more than hints of racial tension permeated the air of our nation. ~ Al Campbell Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Dizzy Gillespie - 1952

Dizzy Gillespie – 1952

$15.98

All of the music on this CD was recorded by trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie in Paris during a one-month period in 1952. The first half of the set teams Gillespie with tenor saxophonist Don Byas, who had moved to Europe from the U.S. six years earlier. The sextet alternates swing standards with some boppish originals and Afro-Cuban jazz pieces. The performances are pretty concise, and one wishes that Gillespie and Byas had had opportunities to really stretch out and inspire each other. The final dozen selections mostly feature the trumpeter backed by a string orchestra with arrangements from Jo Boyer or Daniel White. The repertoire is comprised of swing tunes, but Dizzy`s melodic statements are still pretty adventurous. Three of the numbers drop the strings and have Gillespie playing with the rhythm section. Although one would not call any of this music essential, it does have its moments of interest and Dizzy Gillespie fans will want to pick it up as a gap filler between more significant sessions. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Road-tightened by months of world tours sponsored by the US State Department`s cultural exchange program, the ensemble is flawless, but not at all mechanical. The goofy humor of comic standards like "School Days" and "Doodlin`" is an old jazz standby that only Gillespie truly continued into the post-bop years. However, on Latin-flavored standards like a scorching version of "Manteca" and a spirited run-through of the old standard "Carioca," not to mention the extended solo showcases "Night in Tunisia" and "Cool Breeze," Gillespie and band show that their chops are as sharp as anyone`s. Another highlight is the showcase for pianist Mary Lou Williams, containing selections from her signature piece ZODIAC SUITE and proving this lineup capable of more thoughtful, sensitive playing, than one might expect from their more exuberant moments. Includes liner notes by Ozzie Cadena.Had John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie chosen to disappear after making these combo and big band sessions, his reputation would still be secure for a thousand years. Following hard on the heels of Louis Armstrong and Roy Eldridge, Gillespie is the next great trumpet innovator in American music. Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk changed the manner in which musicians and vocalists phrased every bit as much as Armstrong did; and it is through Dizzy’s direct decendants (Fats Navarro and Miles Davis) that the vast vocabulary of the modern trumpeter proceeds.Sure, some trumpeters had a more alluring tone, but no one since Satchmo had approached the instrument with such bravura chops and harmonic sophistication. The proof is here to behold on GROOVIN’ HIGH. The classic vamp and release of “Blue ‘N’ Boogie” seems to emerge full blown from the great jam sessions of the ’30s, but with more modern chords and a looser rhythmic feel; and when Dizzy explodes out of young Dexter Gordon’s tenor break, it’s clear something new is afoot. And there it is on the title tune, as Dizzy and the other half of his heartbeat, Charlie Parker, essay elongated, heavily syncopated melodic variations–culminating in the trumpeter’s closing aria. On “Dizzy Atmosphere,” following their dynamic solo breaks, they harmonize a complex second theme with such seamless phrasing it must have scared other horn players to death. In a contrasting mood, they redefine the famous changes to Jerome Kern’s “All The Things You Are,” displaying supple melodic grace. As revolutionary as these sides are, Gillespie’s 1946 sides with arranger Gil Fuller served to elevate the big band into orchestral dimensions just beyond the pale of dancers. “Things To Come” finds each section phrasing like a soloist, with broad brassy flourishes, rolling counterpoint and bold accents. Dizzy’s solo is a banshee cry in which he answers long clarion shouts with tenacious, triple-timed variations. Not that this well-oiled machine couldn’t get down and stomp some blues in a classic swing mode, as they do on “Eamon.” Here, Gillespie follows Milt Jackson’s vibes break with even more dramatic contrasts, building harmonic sand castles, only to blow them down in a swe

Dizzy Gillespie is represented in this DVD series by two historic concerts: the first from Belgium in 1958, with a quintet including saxophonist Sonny Stitt, and the second from 1970 in Denmark fronting the legendary Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. Track Listing (Belgium 1958) Blues After Dark On The Sunny Side Of The Street Loverman Cocktails For Two Blues Walk (Denmark 1970) Con Alma The Brother K Now Hear My Meanin’ Manteca Let Me Outta Here Things Are Here Interview These filmed concerts capture the most pivotal and influential jazz artists of the 20th century in their prime – accompanied by some of the most legendary side-musicians of the day. Some of these recordings were forgotten for nearly 50 years. American company Reelin In The Years Productions have re-discovered and produced them and after being digitally re-mastered from high quality, original masters with excellent sound and film quality, they are now presented on DVD by TDK. Originally released on Morgan Records (1003). Includes liner notes by Norman Granz. All tracks have been digitally remastered.Pairing Dizzy Gillespie with Cuban arranger/composer Chico O`Farrill produced a stunning session which originally made up the first half of a Norgran LP. O`Farrill conducts an expanded orchestra which combines a jazz band with a Latin rhythm section; among the participants in the four-part "Manteca Suite" are trumpeters Quincy Jones and Ernie Royal, trombonist J.J. Johnson, tenor saxophonists Hank Mobley and Lucky Thompson, and conga player Mongo Santamaria. "Manteca," written during the previous decade, serves as an exciting opening movement, while the next two segments build upon this famous theme, though they are jointly credited to O`Farrill as well. "Rhumba-Finale" is straight-ahead jazz with some delicious solo work by Gillespie. A later small-group session features the trumpeter with an all-Latin rhythm section and flutist Gilberto Valdes, who is heard on "A Night in Tunisia" and "Caravan." Both of the Latin versions of these pieces are far more interesting than "Con Alma," as the excessive percussion and dull piano accompaniment add little to this normally captivating theme. Long out of print, this 2002 CD reissue will only be available until May 2005; it is well worth acquiring. ~ Ken Dryden Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Night in Havana: Dizzy Gillespie in Cuba

Jazz history was irrevocably altered when Dizzy Gillespie helped form the burgeoning “bebop” movement in the 1940s. This film offers a glimpse of a trip to Cuba from the legendary trumpet player, where he provided entertainment for the audience at Havana’s Fifth International Jazz Festival. Cuban music provided a great inspiration for Gillespie, so it was a fitting location in which to film the star. With a full band behind him, Gillespie performs a series of songs that draw on the traditions of Cuban music, while some intimate footage captures some priceless offstage moments with the talented musician. Backed by a fine Finnish rhythm section, Sandoval and the great trumpeter are both in good spirits playing five of Gillespie`s originals including "Wheatleigh Hall" and "And Then She Stopped." Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars – Dizzy`s Business *

The Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band: James Moody (vocals, flute, tenor saxophone); Roberta Gambarini (vocals); Marty Ashby (guitar); Frank Wess, Antonio Hart (flute, alto saxophone); Jimmy Heath (tenor saxophone); Gary Smulyan (baritone saxophone); Claudio Roditi (trumpet, percussion); Greg Gisbert, Randy Brecker, Frank Greene (trumpet); Jay Ashby (trombone, percussion); Steve Davis, Jason Jackson (trombone); Douglas Purviance (bass trombone); Mulgrew Miller (piano); John Lee (bass guitar); Dennis Mackrel (drum). The Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band`s Dizzy`s Business continues where 2002`s Things to Come (credited to the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars) left off. Gone is the fabulous trumpeter Jon Faddis, who also led that aggregation, but many of the other key players return, among them tenor saxman Jimmy Heath, baritone saxman Gary Smulyan, alto saxmen/flutists Antonio Hart and Frank Wess, trombonists Jay Ashby and Douglas Purviance, trumpeters Greg Gisbert and Claudio Roditi, guitarist Marty Ashby, drummer Dennis Mackrel, and bassist John Lee (who co-produced with the Ashbys). This time around, the all-star cast boasts even greater star power, however, with the additions of James Moody on tenor sax, flute and vocals, Randy Brecker on trumpet, and Mulgrew Miller playing piano. Trombonist Slide Hampton, who also performed on Things to Come, returns here as bandleader, trumpet hotshot Roy Hargrove appears as a guest soloist, and Italian vocalist Roberta Gambarini adds her deliciously sweet tones, scatting dizzily with Hargrove on Gillespie`s steaming "Blue `N Boogie" and turning in a sensitive, moody lead on the classic "Stardust." Not surprisingly, there`s a lot of world-class blowing going on here, both in an ensemble format and in the solos. Miller does Thelonious Monk proud on the album-closing "Off Minor" and "I Mean You" (which Monk co-penned with Coleman Hawkins). Brecker shines on Gillespie`s "Tour de Force" and the opening title track, and Hargrove proves himself up to the task of playing in the Gillespie vets` company with his solo turn on the classic "Hot House." The updated arrangements fashioned by Mackrel and Hampton remain faithful to Gillespie`s vision without becoming trapped in retro-ville. Recorded live in Pittsburgh in 2005, Dizzy`s Business accomplishes what it sets out to do: pay tribute to the master and nudge him into the future. ~ Jeff Tamarkin Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Of course, Dizzy is also known for his extensive explorations into Afro-Cuban rhythms, and that particular preoccupation does pop up on "Long Long Summer," but it`s bossa nova and samba grooves that stand out here. One moment, Gillespie is trading licks with sax man Charlie Ventura and flautist Leo Wright, respectively, on Antonio Carlos Jobim`s bossa nova classics "Chega de Saudade" and "Desafinado" (the latter given a samba lilt here), the next he`s making a jazz-samba statement all his own with the self-composed "For the Gypsies." He might not have taken his bossa-jazz fusion to the pop charts like Stan Getz did, but he surely made his mark with this album nevertheless. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Dizzy Gillespie - Dizzy Digs Paris [Remaster]

Dizzy Gillespie – Dizzy Digs Paris [Remaster]

$18.79

On February 9, 1953, Dizzy Gillespie played a live concert at the Salle Pleyel in Paris that was recorded, though when excerpts were first released, there were only enough used to fill one 10" LP. This two-disc set not only includes the entire 84-minute show (which actually fills just over one disc) for the first time on CD, it also adds 16 studio tracks that Gillespie cut in Paris that same month, as well as eight Gillespie-less studio tracks (also done in Paris in February 1953) by three of his sidemen, working under the name the Wade Legge Trio. It`s the live Salle Pleyel set that`s the main feature, presented here, according to the liner notes, in an "unedited remastered version of that evening`s events with a number of butchered solos fully restored plus the addition of [alto and baritone saxophonist] Bill Graham`s previously discarded showcase "`I Don`t Stand a Ghost of a Chance,`" for which Dizzy made a rare appearance on piano."This might not have been Gillespie`s best band, or Gillespie`s very best period; those honors probably belong to the work he did in the mid- to late `40s. Still, Gillespie close to his best — as he is here — is very good indeed, as is the sound quality of this concert recording. The program mixes some of the more well-known tunes identified with Dizzy ("Ooh-Shoo-Be-Doo-Be," "Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac") with some standards (including no less than four songs written or co-written by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin). On one of those Gershwin tunes, "Embraceable You," there`s also a surprise vocal by Sarah Vaughan — not a member of Gillespie`s band at the time, but a fellow jazz star "who just happened to be in the building," according to the liner notes. The first ten of the 16 Gillespie-led studio tracks — in which just one of the 16 songs from the live portion ("Mon Homme") is reprised — are much in the same vein, though not quite as lively as the concert material. Too, the live setting, unlike the studio one, gave the band a chance to stretch out songs to nearly ten minutes, as they did on "The Champ," "Good Bait," and "Birk`s Works." For those who like the fun-loving, vocal side of Gillespie`s persona, though, this studio version of "Clappin` Rhythm" stands out as a highlight. The final six of the Gillespie-led studio recordings finds the sextet supplemented by the Paris Operatic String Orchestra (with arrangements by Michel Legrand), and are good as bop-meets-orchestration goes, though orchestral arrangements don`t play to Gillespie`s strengths. The eight final cuts on disc two represent pianist Wade Legge`s sole session he did as a leader, with the rhythm section of bassist Lou Hackney and drummer Al Jones. Though not too similar in tone to the Gillespie-led numbers that dominate this compilation — it`s well-done if typical early-`50s bop, with the piano to the fore — it does round out this e

Dizzy Gillespie – The Cool World [7/29]

$10.98

Although Dizzy Gillespie is usually associated with the bebop revolution of the 1930s and `40s, he continued to innovate, recording prolifically, well into the 1990s. Dizzy hit a particularly productive stretch in the 1960s, and his soundtrack for Shirley Clarke`s 1964 film, THE COOL WORLD, is one of the gems of this period. All the tunes on the album were composed by the pianist Mal Waldron, and Dizzy interprets their moody, minor-key atmospheres with nuance and style. The music draws mostly on straight bop, with the occasional passage demonstrating a rich Ellingtonian sweep. The playing is top-notch throughout, especially from Diz, who was still in full command of his considerable powers. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Originally released on Verve (V6-8423).GILLESPIANA, originally released on two LPs by Verve in 1960, features legendary be-bop trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie in two New York performances, one live from Carnegie Hall. A full jazz orchestra backs him on each, and the fat, Latin-tinged sound is the result of a combustible collaboration with a young Lalo Schiffrin. At the time of these recordings, Gillespie was interested in bringing be-bop out of the bars and into a more artistic light. His work here with Schiffrin was praised at the time, Gillespie stretching his own talents to accommodate the younger composer’s more contemporary compositional ideas. The first five tracks, all Schiffrin compositions, are studio recordings and have a sweeping orchestral depth. The remainder of the recording is the Carnegie Hall performance, which is looser but marvelous, and includes a Schiffrin reworking of Dizzy’s classic “Night in Tunisia,” as “Tunisian Fantasy,” on the final cut.

The indisputable founding father of bebop, Dizzy Gillespie remains one of the most recognizable and popular figures in jazz history. During his heyday in the 1940s, Dizzy was one of the first American jazz musicians to incorporate the electrifying sound of Afro-Cuban rhythms into a big-band setting. Forty years later, the legendary jazz trumpeter was invited to Cuba, the wellspring of his inspiration, to headline the Fifth International Jazz Festival in Havana. The journey, as documented in this star-studded film, was a spiritual and triumphal homecoming for the musical genius.Featuring outstanding performances with then-rising stars trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, among other celebrated Cuban musicians, director John Holland expertly offers a carefully fleshed-out portrait of a musician whose robust musical ebullience is matched by an earthly sense of humor (The New York Times). Among the film’s performances, Dizzy delivers speed-of-light bop licks on his Afro-Latin and calypso tinged tunes A Night in Tunisia and Manteca, and is candidly captured as he plays, scats, dances, and jokes, with a joy and exuberance that light up the stage.

As a leader his ability to inspire musicians helped produce some of the most influential music of the last century. Performing with Dizzy in this sublime celebration of jazz music are such stars as Slide Hampton (who wrote most of the arrangements), Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Mario Rivera and the Afro-Cuban queen herself–Flora Purim. A selection of musicians whom in their own right create truly beautiful music, but combined together, with Dizzy at the helm (and a magical orchestra in support) take the artform to some very serious places. Though it`s a collaboration between Count Basie, one of the icons of swing, and Dizzy Gillespie, one of the pioneers of bebop, their musical styles are more congruent than one might think. Both musicians are firmly rooted in the blues, as we see most poignantly on "Back to the Land," a composition they wrote together. Here, the band plays a slow 12/8 groove, while Gillespie soliloquizes over the top with stark yet pointed melodic jabs. Basie solos in his trademark minimalistic, "swing low" fashion, while bassist Ray Brown and drummer Mickey Roker keep the tempo rock steady. On the traditional tune, "Saint James Infirmary," the quartet harks back to a kind of New Orleans funeral march. As with "Back to the Land," the song gradually changes into a 12/8 feel, but here Basie`s playing retains much of the atmosphere of trad jazz; his dark, almost ominous, chord clusters conjure images of a mournful procession on a rainy day. The sound quality varies from gig to gig, from fair to very good. The readings of "Groovin` High," (there are two), "`Round Midnight," and "All the Things You Are" are the best things here, but there isn`t a weak cut on the disc. That said, this is strictly for collectors. Novices should be steered to some of the classic compilations on Verve. ~ Thom Jurek Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Frank Schifano`s vamping ostinatos on the extended blowing of "Kush" lend an Afro-Cuban funk feeling to the groove, pointing out just how much contemporary jazz and R&B owes to Gillespie`s Latin breakthroughs of the `40s. Of course for all the surface similarities, rock and funk bands of that time weren`t employing such complex harmonic devices. In addition, there`s another rollicking Latin excursion on "Mas Que Nada (Pow, Pow, Pow)," the sweet shuffling blues "Bye," and a curiously refreshing ballad, "Something In Your Smile" (from the movie "Doctor Doolittle"). But the title tune is the centerpiece, with its Chano Pozo-like opening chants, its humorous take off on the call-and-response of the old spirituals, and a righteous boogaloo backbeat to fire up the trumpet-tenor exchanges. It is precisely this balance between good-natured fun and fiery, uncompromising musical intelligence that makes SWING LOW, SWEET CADILLAC such a classic. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
