Tea for the Tillerman

Tea for the Tillerman

$6.89

Cat Stevens tends to be lumped in with the early-’70s singer-songwriter school led by James Taylor and Carole King, but he actually fits in rather neatly with such wistful English contemporaries as Nick Drake, Syd Barrett, and Donovan. Tea for the Tillerman’s “Wild World,” “Into White,” and “Longer Boats” indicate that he may have been a more gifted tunesmith than the lot of them. As with the best…

Cat Stevens’ Majikat, Earth Tour was recorded during his last legendary North American tour in 1976. It was an ambitious production involving live magicians, synchronized film projection and large innovative stage set. This was the ultimate tour of Cat Stevens before he quit the music business and became Yusuf Islam; he didn’t perform on stage again for nearly thirty years.

Producers include: Mike Hurst, Paul Samwell-Smith, Cat Stevens.Compilation producer: Bill Levinson.Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen.Personnel: Cat Stevens (vocals).Audio Mixer: Paul Hicks.Liner Note Author: Malu Halasa.Photographers: G. Hanekroot; Michael Putland; David Redfern. Before converting to Islam in 1978, the British-born Cat Stevens blazed the trail for the sensitive singer-songwriter movement that got its start in the earlier part of the decade. Containing both early and late representations of Stevens` impressive canon, VERY BEST OF surpasses the wildly popular GREATEST HITS collection that preceded it.Starting with the more lushly orchestrated material of the late 60s ("Matthew & Son," "The First Cut Is The Deepest" which Rod Stewart turned into a mid-70s hit), this collection captures Stevens` transformation into an introspective artisan who succeeded with a unique brand of folk-pop. Moving from a rumored ode to actress Patti D`Arbanville ("Lady D`Arbanville" featuring flutist Peter Gabriel), Stevens quickly moved into weightier matters of introspection and spirituality ranging from the global ("Wild World," "Peace Train") to the familial ("Father And Son").In addition to writing about the plight of the younger set ("Where Do The Children Play?") and looking to religious hymns for inspiration ("Morning Has Broken"), Stevens` joyful love of pop emerged on a smash cover of Sam Cooke`s "Another Saturday Night." One major highlight is 1970`s previously unreleased "I`ve Got A Thing About Seeing My Grandson Grow Old," a twangy nugget saturated in joy and hope. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. A relentless touring schedule throughout the 1970s saw Cat Stevens win over an impressively large fanbase. With albums hovering around the upper reaches of the charts, Stevens was one of the most successful solo performers of the decade. This live show is taken from a North American tour in 1976, a lavish production which featured films, a special stage, magicians, and more. Tracks featured include "The Wind," "Father & Son," "Moonshadow," and more.

Stevens manages to have his cake and eat it too, simultaneously achieving pop accessibility and artistic relevance. While inviting rhythms (buoyed by Stevens`s dynamic acoustic strumming) and pop hooks abound, the feel is decidedly gentle and spare. Apart from the occasional string section, Stevens is accompanied only by a three-piece band as he sings his introspective lyrics with appreciable fervor. While there are some relatively conventional love songs here ("Hard Headed Woman," "Wild World"), the most memorable moments come when Stevens`s lyrics venture further afield. "Father and Son" is a poignant but realistic and unsentimental portrait of the generation gap, capable of reducing any given dad or junior to tears. "On the Road to Find Out" and "But I Might Die Tonight" reflect Stevens`s existential dilemmas, and the resulting spiritual quest that would later lead him to embrace the Islamic faith. The graceful beauty of arrangements, performances, and songs makes TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN a folk-rock classic. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Cat Stevens - Early Tapes

Cat Stevens – Early Tapes

$7.06

A lot has been said of Cat Stevens` early music being over-produced and filled with bloated `60s studio touches, which is true, but, even so, that shouldn`t obscure the fact that in these songs lie the genius that was to become Cat Stevens. And they`re not altogether bad songs either. This collection opens with "I Love My Dog," which, while not brilliant, at least showed that Stevens was willing to approach songwriting from unconventional angles even at that stage. The following track, "The First Cut Is the Deepest," would have been a perfect fit for the Righteous Brothers. The majority of the songs, which aren`t as consistently great as his later work, are still impressive. "I`m So Sleepy" sounds similar to some of the tracks he`d be cutting in a few years, as does the Gordon Lightfoot-esque "Blackness of the Night" and "Where Are You," which wouldn`t have been out of place on Mona Bone Jakon. That`s not to say that some of the songs aren`t poorly done, but, overall, if the horns and strings are stripped away, you still have a Cat Stevens album. ~ Matt Fink Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Originally released on A&M (4391).Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (December 1999, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).Between 1970 and 1972, Cat Stevens recorded four albums in the same manner, using the same producer and many of the same musicians, painting the album covers, and assigning the records ponderous titles. Things changed with his next album, Foreigner. The recording itself had been produced by Stevens, and while a couple of Stevens` usual backup musicians had been retained, New York session musicians appeared, and second guitarist Alun Davies was gone. With him went the acoustic guitar interplay that had been the core of Stevens` sound, replaced by more elaborate keyboard-based arrangements complete with strings, brass, and a female vocal trio featuring Patti Austin. It`s easy to look at the 18-plus minute "Foreigner Suite" that took up the first side and accuse Stevens of excess and indulgence. What should be kept in mind, however, is that his peers in 1973 were acts like Jethro Tull and Yes, who in turn were taking their cue from the Beatles` Abbey Road and the Who`s Tommy. Call Foreigner ambitious, then, rather than indulgent. Actually, the suite is full of compelling melodic sections and typically emotive singing that could have made for an album side`s worth of terrific four-minute Cat Stevens songs, if only he had composed them that way. As it is, the suite is a collection of tantalizing fragments. But the album`s second side, featuring the Top 40 hit "The Hurt," demonstrates that, even in the four-minute range, his songwriting and arranging were becoming overly busy. On the whole, Foreigner marked a slight fall-off in quality from Catch Bull at Four, which itself had marked a slight fall-off from Teaser and the Firecat. The decline seemed more extreme, though, because Foreigner clearly was intended to be better than its p

Most of the songs were unusually lightweight, but the autobiographical "(I Never Wanted) To Be a Star" explored Stevens` ambivalence about being in the music business, an attitude that would find him dropping out and finding religion after one more album. In the meantime, Izitso produced a final Top 40 hit in "(Remember the Days of The) Old Schoolyard" and a singles-chart entry in the instrumental "Was Dog a Doughnut." As a result, Stevens returned to the Top Ten LPs list with a ninth straight gold album, his last. ~ William Ruhlmann Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

The songs are set on the faraway planet Polygor, which "existed to give numbers to the universe," and they are sung from the point of prominent inhabitants of the planet, including the wise and deep-thinking old Novim ("Novim`s Nightmare") and cranky emperor Monad ("Monad`s Anthem"). The story line isn`t easy to follow, but the songs themselves are in Steven`s signature folkie pop mode, and the one non-story song, "Banapple Gas" (a distant relative of Donovan`s "Mellow Yellow") is as catchy as anything in his catalogue. For that reason, the very idea of a Cat Stevens greatest-hits collection may be troublesome to some fans, since they will only notice the missing album tracks, but Greatest Hits does its job exceptionally well. With the exception of "The Hurt," all of his hits from the early `70s — "Wild World," "Moon Shadow," "Peace Train," "Morning Has Broken," "Sitting," "Oh Very Young," "Another Saturday Night," "Ready," and "Two Fine People" — are here, along with three other fine album tracks. In short, it is everything that casual fans need — and even fans that find a favorite or two missing will be hard-pressed to deny that this is a solid introduction and a great listen. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. It reunites him with TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN producer Paul Samwell-Smith, and like that early classic it`s gorgeously arranged, with discreet strings and a terrific command of dynamics (as in the whisper-to-a-scream "Randy"). Other highlights include the uncharacteristic "Bad Brakes," a blues-rocker that sounds like Phil Collins fronting Bad Company, the classically influenced instrumental "the Artist," and "Just Another Night," a folkie rejection song that most explicitly harkens back to Steven`s classic period. Personnel: Cat Stevens (vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards); Mark Warner (electric guitar, bouzouki); Jean Roussel (electric piano, Clavinet, organ, keyboards, synthesizer); Larry Steele (vocals, guitar, flute, bass guitar, percussion); Alun Davies (vocals, acoustic guitar, 12-string guitar); Sue Lynch, Kimberley Carlson, Angela Howell (vocals); Bruce Lynch (bass guitar); Gerry Conway (drums, percussion); Chico Batera (percussion).Recording information: 1976.This 1976 concert recording works as both a portrait of Cat Stevens onstage and a live best-of, as it contains versions of many of his biggest hits, such as "Moonshadow," "Wild World," and "Peace Train." While the arrangements of these folk-pop classics are pretty similar here to those of the studio versions, both Stevens and his band lean into the tunes with twice as much intensity. The electricity is palpable as Stevens–a full-on pop idol at the time–feeds off the enthusiastic audience`s energy and sends it back out to them with even more emotional firepower. Cat Stevens - Very Best Of (+4 Bonus Tracks)

Cat Stevens – Very Best Of (+4 Bonus Tracks)

$13.13

Producers include: Mike Hurst, Paul Samwell-Smith, Cat Stevens.Compilation producer: Bill Levinson.Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen. This is a 24-track anthology of favorites by British folk-pop singer Cat Stevens.CD contains 4 bonus tracks. 2005. Originally released onA&M (3623).Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (December 1999, Sterling Sound, New York, New York). While Foreigner was Cat Stevens` fifth consecutive gold album and his fourth straight Top Ten hit, it actually marked a small drop commercially and encountered critical resistance for the lengthy suite that took up all of side one. Eight months later, Buddha and the Chocolate Box found Stevens back in England and back with producer Paul Samwell-Smith and second guitarist Alun Davies. It also marked a return to the simpler style of earlier albums. No song ran much over five minutes, the arrangements were sparer and featured more acoustic guitar, and the lyrics did not take off into discursive ruminations about the state of the universe. It was very much as if Stevens was deliberately trying to make an album like Teaser and the Firecat, his commercial and artistic apex. Having begun the album with an ode to "Music" and its potential for reforming the world, he ended with "Home in the Sky," in which he sang, "Music is a lady that I still love." Such statements of renewed commitment added to the sense that the album was consciously crafted as an attempted second wind for the singer, who had been recording and performing at a torrid pace since returning to the music business full-time four years before. But that was not to say that he had abandoned the spiritual nature of his creative quest, and the songs were, as usual, littered with religious imagery. Stevens` fans responded warmly to Buddha and the Chocolate Box`s stylistic return to form. "Oh Very Young" became his first Top Ten hit in two years, and the album was held out of number one only by The Sting. The album`s tone, however, suggested that Stevens was once again wearying of being a pop star, even as he delivered a record that maintained that status. ~ William Ruhlmann Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Personnel: Cat Stevens (vocals, acoustic guitar, Spanish guitar, electric mandolin, pennywhistle, piano, electric piano, organ, synthesizer, drums, percussion); Alun Davies (acoustic guitar, Spanish guitar); Andreas Toumazis (bouzouki); Del Newman (strings); Jean Roussel (piano, organ); Alan James (bass instrument); Gerry Conway (drums); Linda Lewis, C.S. Choir (background vocals).Cat Stevens began to taper off the winning streak he`d scored with TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN and TEASER AND THE FIRECAT on this 1972 release. CATCH BULL AT FOUR still fared well commercially, yet it lacked the focus and immediate appeal of its predecessors. Still, the album showed Stevens`s remarkable talent for writing insightful, moving lyrics and memorable, infectious melodies. Aside from the exuberantly joyous "I Can`t Keep It In," the mood of CATCH BULL AT FOUR is a bit darker and edgier. In "Sitting," for example, the singer is dogged by thoughts of stagnation and mortality while a chiming, minstrel-esque keyboard riff plays in the background. The somber mood is heightened by some hushed acoustic guitar-driven numbers ("Boy with a Moon and Star on His Head") and some stark piano ballads ("Sweet Scarlet"). The fact that Stevens was experimenting more with styles, arrangements, and dynamics here may have given some fans pause, yet his trademark charm is still in evidence, as is the dependable strength of his songwriting. Following in the tradition of his previous effort, with a similar cover design and feel, Cat continued his painful journey through life. Even then, there was a sadness linked to his happy songs such as "Moonshadow," "How Can I Tell You" and "Tuesday`s Dead." Our favourite school hymn was also given the treatment – how did he manage to make such a happy verse sound so sad? The answer, as we have all seen, was in himself; he was a rare songwriter but he was mostly a very troubled soul, something he seems to have resolved through his conversion to the Muslim faith. He won, we lost him. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Cat Stevens - Matthew & Son [UK Bonus Tracks]

Cat Stevens – Matthew & Son [UK Bonus Tracks]

$11.67

This is Stevens` first UK album plus both sides of his third UK single.Includes liner notes by John Tracy. This remastered version of folk singer Cat Stevens` debut recording features eight bonus tracks of rare material as well as the single "I Love My Dog."Liner Note Author: Mike Hurst.Arrangers: Alan Tew; Mike Hurst.Cat Stevens` Matthew & Son was among the handful of releases that introduced Decca Records` "offbeat"-oriented (but ultimately largely psychedelic/progressive) Deram label in England. Actually, Stevens` "I Love My Dog" launched the label in fine style by climbing to number 27 on the U.K. charts, and its follow-up, "Matthew & Son," hit number two, resulting in the release of the original album of the same name. The latter was not only a fine account of Stevens` early folk-influenced pop/rock sound, but was also a beautiful, candid audio "snapshot" of one side of Swinging London`s musical ambience in late 1966 and early 1967. It melds tinkling harpsichords ("Matthew & Son") and moderately ambitious orchestrations (mostly horns and strings) on some songs ("I Love My Dog") with folky acoustic guitar on others ("Portabello Road"), a lot of it carrying highly expressive, weirdly personal lyrics. Though it was like pulling teeth to get some of those early records out from Decca, this album sounds today like the record that should have accompanied the American version of the Beatles` Rubber Soul onto millions of turntables. It`s very distant from the sound that Stevens was ultimately known for, and in many ways, it`s more dated than what he did for Island/A&M, but it`s much more self-consciously accessible, arranged in different styles, ranging from vaudeville-style band accompaniment ("I See a Road") to trippy Donovan-esque ballads ("Baby Get Your Head Screwed On," "When I Speak to the Flowers," "Hummingbird"). Some of it, such as the sax-driven "Come on and Dance," is a little awkward as efforts at a soul sound, but all of it is fun, even the slightly too Engelbert Humperdinck-esque "Lady." ~ Bruce Eder Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Like its 2006 predecessor, AN OTHER CUP, ROADSINGER harks back to the Cat Stevens who dominated the charts in the `70s with a warm, accessible folk-pop sound. And while the lyrics here are not without their spiritual content, there`s nothing overt or denominational about it. Probably even less so than what you`d find on any given U2 album, for instance. The pace is mostly slow to moderate here, with a reflective tone prevailing, but then, his classic albums like TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN were never exactly about raving rockers either. Ultimately, ROADSINGER is all about Yusuf/Cat/Steven getting back to what he does best–agreeably earnest, unfailingly melodic, amiably easygoing, acoustic-based tunes whose weight can easily be obscured by their abundance of ear-catching hooks.

Cat Stevens - Footsteps in the Dark: Greatest Hits, Vol. 2

Cat Stevens – Footsteps in the Dark: Greatest Hits, Vol. 2

$8.39

Producers: Paul Samwell Smith, Cat Stevens, David Kershenbaum.Compilation producers: Jeffrey Gold, David Gordon, Paul Samwell Smith.Originally released on A & M (3736). Includes liner notes by Cat Stevens, Jeffrey Gold.Personnel: Cat Stevens (vocals, guitar, keyboards).Liner Note Authors: Tracy Veal; Jeffrey Gold; Yusuf Islam.Photographer: Daniel Gordon.Cat Stevens` greatest hits were contained on the album of that title released in June 1975, though that set did not include the minor Top 40 entry "The Hurt" and Stevens made the singles chart four more times between 1976 and 1979, with "Banapple Gas," the Top 40 "(Remember the Days of The) Old Schoolyard," "Was Dog a Doughnut," and "Bad Brakes." One might expect that an album subtitled Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 would contain all those tracks, but if so, one would be disappointed. The only chart single on the 14-track Footsteps in the Dark is "The Hurt." Actually, the album is a non-hits compilation of good album tracks drawn from seven of Stevens` nine A&M albums originally released between 1970 and 1978, plus a non-LP B-side and two songs that previously had only appeared in the 1972 film Harold and Maude. It leans heavily to the earlier, folkier period, with ten songs drawn from 1970-1972, and thus emphasizes the vulnerable, seeking singer/songwriter of Tea for the Tillerman over the more pop-oriented and musically ambitious artist who made albums like Izitso. The material is sometimes dated ("I`d like to live on a commune and/People can call me a hippie"), and, in the wake of Stevens` conversion to Islam, one inevitably hears lines like "Where I`ll end up well I think,/Only God really knows" in a different light. But Stevens` songwriting still impresses, his childlike wonder and earnestness are still endearing, and such political statements as "Where Do the Children Play?" remain timely. Though Stevens` best albums, Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat, work best as albums, Footsteps in the Dark confirmed that, a decade on from their initial appearance, his songs had maintained their quality. ~ William Ruhlmann Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
