Following the first brilliant flowerings of his talent from 1945-51, Bud Powell’s recording sessions always hung in a delicate balance between his awe-inspiring creativity and his fragile psyche. This trio date from August 14, 1953–following a year-and-a-half stay in an institution–has always stood out as one of the best of his later recordings, an essential document of modern jazz piano. Personnel: Bud Powell (piano); Gilbert Rovere (bass); Carl Donnell "Kansas" Fields (drums).Recorded in Paris, France. Includes original liner notes by Leonard Feather.Personnel: Bud Powell (piano); Johnny Griffin, Barney Wilen (tenor saxophone); Pierre Michelot (bass); Kenny Clarke (drums).Principally recorded in 1960.Considering how late it was in his career, Bud Powell was in surprisingly good spirits at this live session with bassist Gilbert Rovere and drummer Kansas Fields. The innovative pianist stretches out on nine bop standards including two he had written ("Reets and I" and "Parisian Thoroughfare"); in addition there are previously unreleased versions of "Indiana" and "B-Flat Blues." Far superior to most of his 1955-1958 sessions, this was one of Powell`s best late-period recordings; he is in near-prime form throughout. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Bud Powell Trio: Bud Powell (piano); Niels-Henning Osted Pedersen (bass); William Schiopffe (drums).Recorded in Copenhagen, Denmark on April 26, 1962.Though the mercurial pianist Bud Powell`s performances could be erratic, to say the least, he`s heard in top form on this live 1962 performance from Copenhagen. Indulging in seemingly effortless glissandos and breathtaking displays of technical mastery, Powell, accompanied by Oscar Peterson`s future bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, performs a high-spirited set that includes the Thelonious Monk classic "Straight, No Chaser" and a sensitive reading of Benny Golson`s poignant standard, "I Remember Clifford." Pianist Chick Corea in 1996 gathered together some notable young all-stars (tenor-saxophonist Joshua Redman, trumpeter Wallace Roney, altoist Kenny Garrett, bassist Christian McBride, plus veteran drummer Roy Haynes) for explorations of tunes by the innovative pianist Bud Powell. Although “Bouncin’ With Bud,” “Tempus Fugit” and “Celia” have been occasionally recorded by others, most of the complex songs (including “Mediocre,” “Dusk In Sandi,” “Oblivion” and “Glass Enclosure”) have rarely been played in recent decades. Rather than play revivalist bebop, Corea and his associates (after authentically stating the melody) perform modern post bop improvisations in their own styles, so much of the music is way beyond bop. In addition to nine Powell songs, Corea contributed a song rightfully titled “Bud Powell.” All of the talented musicians have a fair amount of solo space and sound consistently inspired, making this a very successful and easily recommended project. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Chick Corea – Piano; Kenny Garrett – Sax (Alto); Roy Haynes – Drums; Christian McBride – Bass; Joshua Redman – Sax (Tenor); Wallace Roney – Trumpet

Personnel: Bud Powell (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Taylor (drums).Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on December 28, 1958. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather and Michael CuscunaPersonnel: Bud Powell (piano); Art Taylor (drums).Liner Note Authors: Leonard Feather; Bob Blumenthal.Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Hackensack, NJ (12/28/1958).Pianist Bud Powell made several fine recordings for Blue Note during the 1950s, including The Scene Changes, his last album for the label in 1958. He`s joined by bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor on a handful of his own compositions. Powell is in excellent form, and there`s a simple elegance to the small setting with each of the players sharing equal space in the stereo spectrum. The title cut bops along at a snappy pace before taking time out toward the end for a Taylor solo, while "Down With It" is pushed forward by Powell`s forceful, driving rhythm. Extra touches here and there, like the piano intro on "Cleopatra`s Dream" and the drum roll that kicks off "Duid Deed," lets the listener know these players are in the groove. Only "Boderick" sticks out as minor, and the fact that the players only devote two minutes to this parlor-piano piece seems to indicate they felt the same way. Powell, Chambers, and Taylor make amends for this on the eight-minute "Coming Up," a medium-tempo piece with idiosyncratic piano lines and a thumping beat (the bonus cut includes a shorter version of the composition). The Scene Changes is a fine album filled with good compositions and nice interplay between three musicians in top form. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Three takes of "Bouncing with Bud" are included, but the master take is the best. Bud`s solos are charged with struggle, light, and clarity. "Wail," an up-tempo original based on the "Rhythm" changes, demonstrates the intellectuality and grace of Bud`s thought process. Listen to how the smooth inevitability of Fats Navarro`s solo is seamlessly followed by a rhythmically incisive Powell.Bud`s presence is strong and compelling throughout. On "Dance of the Infidels," you can hear him vocalizing behind his solos, and his playing on the manic "52nd Street Theme" is respectfully Monk-like. On the ballad "You Go to My Head" (a trio tune), his touch is infused with a light, yearning quality. The recordings (the original sessions were produced by Alfred Lion) are rough enough to allow the listener to feel the excitement and grit, but every note and cymbal hit is audible and balanced. The fifth and final CD from pianist Bud Powell`s 1962 stay at the Golden Circle in Stockholm has as its high points versions of "52nd Street Theme" and "Straight No Chaser" (the latter lasts 20 minutes); on the minus side is a throwaway (and off-mike) Powell vocal on "This Is No Laughin` Matter." On a whole, this series is as essential as the Blue Notes but has its strong moments and is worth picking up by lovers of bop piano and the troubled but brilliant Bud Powell. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Rene Urtreger – Joue Bud Powell

$9.69

Ren\u0002 Urtreger was only 20 years old and brand new to the jazz scene at the time of his debut recording, yet he was already making an impression. His tribute to Bud Powell finds him playing bop with some authority, covering some of the troubled genius` best compositions. Accompanied by bassist Benoit Quersin and drummer Jean-Louis Viale, Urtreger shows a tendency to tackle nearly everything at a moderate tempo, though it might have been that his rhythm section wasn`t up to handling a faster pace. "So Sorry Please" is full of campy humor as Powell intended, though "Parisian Thoroughfare" would have benefited from a bit more risk-taking. Urtreger`s two original works include the roller coaster "A la Bud" (which seems to be based on the chord changes of "Tea for Two") and the stunning ballad "Mercedes." The CD is rather short, timing in at just over 24 minutes, but the mid-line pricing of this Jazz in Paris CD reissue makes it very affordable. ~ Ken Dryden Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Corea is joined here by Roy Haynes, Christian McBride, Joshua Redmon, and Terence Blanchard.

Originally released as a 10 inch LP on Debut (3).Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). The centerpiece of JAZZ AT MASSEY HALL is a Bud Powell trio performance recorded in Toronto`s Massey Hall in 1953. This concert marked a return for Powell to the concert scene after a one-year absence due to illness. While there are many compelling performances on the release–not only by Bud, but also by his bandmates, bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach–as a whole, this release is an intriguing hybrid. Also included here are excerpts from a nightclub performance during the summer of that year, with Powell joined by George Duvivier (bass) and Art Taylor (drums). Accordingly, the sonic quality of the nightclub cuts carries a loose, off-the-cuff feel, while the Massey Hall concert is appropriately fuller sounding. Mingus is well represented here–his composition "Bass-ically Speaking" is included in this reissue, and it is a fine example of Mingus`s work. Powell is at his best on "Embraceable You" and "Sure Thing," two Massey Hall cuts that display an expressive undertone and an uncanny connection with the audience. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Bud Shank - The Pacific Jazz Years

Bud Shank – The Pacific Jazz Years

Jazz fans of a certain age will recall the East Coast/West Coast schism prevalent in the 1950`s (and early `60s), which basically went: East Coast jazz, great; West Coast, less so. Alto saxophonist and flutist Bud Shank was one of the players on the western side of the divide, and the two-CD PACIFIC JAZZ YEARS illustrates how foolish all that East/West business really was. While Shank indeed could play in a cool, offhand manner, he could also burn and swing with the best of them. Claude Williamson also proves himself to be an ace pianist in the classic bebop mold of Bud Powell and Al Haig. West, east, north, or south, Shank was one of jazz`s very best alto specialists. Shorty Rogers/Bud Shank & The Lighthouse All-Stars - America The Beautiful

Shorty Rogers/Bud Shank & The Lighthouse All-Stars – America The Beautiful

$16.98

/Bud Shank & The Lighthouse All-Stars.Composer: Shorty Rogers. The 1991 version of the Lighthouse All-Stars gave trumpeter Shorty Rogers and altoist Bud Shank top billing. For this Candid CD, Rogers supplied eight of the selections (including "Less Is More," "Lotus Bud," "Fun" and "Here`s That Old Martian Again") and the band also stretched out on Bud Powell`s "Un Poco Loco" and a Rogers` arrangement of "America The Beautiful." This was one of the final records for both Shorty and the great tenor Bob Cooper and overall it is a typically swinging, witty and beautiful effort. Also in fine form are trumpeter Conte Candoli, Bill Perkins (on baritone, tenor and soprano), pianist Pete Jolly, bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Larence Marable. ~ Scott Yanow Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
