Reissued in 1999 to combat a flood of expensive bootlegs, the album shows that the band`s later acclaim was not unfounded.Nine of the 10 tracks feature main songwriter Stuart Murdoch`s winsome vocals, a mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation and a grab-bag of pianos, horns, flutes, and hand claps. The odd one out of the bunch is "Electronic Renaissance", an electronic keyboard knockabout that recalls Depeche Mode`s more insistent moments from the Vince Clarke era. Following secondary composer Stuart David`s departure, de facto leader Stuart Murdoch divides the songwriting chores among the other members; yet what`s apparent is the single-mindedness of Belle & Sebastian`s song focus.The overall mood is even softer and more precious (if that can be believed) than their previous efforts. Murdoch and Chris Geddes` "Don`t Leave The Light On Baby" is the band`s attempt at a `70s soul ballad, a Wurlitzer adding a Music-of-My-Mind vibe to a lovers` dissertation. Isobel Campbell`s "Beyond The Sunrise" is biblical Celtic-prog-folk, all flutes and acoustic guitar, while Jackson`s own "The Wrong Girl" is an upbeat, country-ish lament with typically soulful Belle & Sebastian strings and trumpet giving the song an understated melodic kick. Of course, Murdoch contributes a classic or two–"I Fought a War" is a gentle away-at-the-battlefield tale imbued with the greatest sense of dread Murdoch`s ever given a song. SEBASTIAN $17.96 In this thoughtful Scandinavian drama, a teenage boy wrestles with his sexuality and learns that most of his deepest fears were unfounded. Sebastian is almost 17 when he figures out that he is a homosexual. Though he lives with wonderful, stable parents and has a good-hearted sister, he finds himself wracked with turmoil and suddenly withdraws from them all. The more they try to understand why, the more distant Sebastian becomes. Things get worse when he falls in love with the handsome Ulf, who comes from an unstable, tempestuous home. Sebastian realizes he is lucky, but still can’t help but become irritated when he brings Ulf home for dinner. His parents are too nice and this quietly infuriates their son. Eventually they leave the two boys alone in the house. Sebastian have great fun doing teenage guy stuff, but then they take a bath together and it is then that Sebastian tries to kiss Ulf. The latter is confused by the gesture and quickly pulls away, making feel Sebastian feel even worse. Soon afterward, the even more pained Sebastian finally comes out to his parents who despite their love and support are still deeply hurt. Despite their own suffering, the parents remain determined to love and support their son, something that surprises and comforts Sebastian.
