In contrast to the expansive canvases of psychedelic music and the virtuoso excesses of prog rock, Bad Company`s debut stripped the blues-rock model down to its essentials, playing muscular, amped-up power chords over driving 4/4 beats. Though the singing of vocalist Paul Rodgers (who had previously been in the blues-based band Free) has a rather flat affect, it is powerful and distinctive, meshing perfectly with the bluesy riffs of guitarist Mick Ralphs. The tightly structured songs are cut from similar cloth, but the exuberant "Can`t Get Enough," the snarling "Bad Company," and moody, spectral "Ready For Love" provide enough variety to keep things interesting. The gentle "Seagull," though uncharacteristically introspective for the band, is one of Rodgers/Ralphs`s finest compositions. Subsequent Bad Company albums would rework the same basic themes, but BAD COMPANY, the group`s opening salvo, was their defining work. It remains a classic of straightforward, blues-based rock. Bad Company – Bad Company In Concert: Merchants Of Cool $10.98 Full title: Bad Company In Concert: Merchants Of Cool.Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, arranger, guitar, piano); David "Bucket" Colwell (guitar); Jaz Lochrie (bass); Simon Kirk (drums, percussion).Principally recorded live at The Paramount Theater, Denver, Colorado; The Grove Of Anaheim, Anaheim, California, in January 2002.This release includes a bonus DVD.Sanctuary`s 2002 release In Concert: Merchants of Cool captures a latter-day lineup of Bad Company fronted by Paul Rodgers running through their big hits circa 2001 (the album is culled from dates at the Paramount Theatre in Denver and the Grove of Anaheim, but no specific dates are mentioned). The performances are sturdy, solid, and, at times, even a little spirited; though this couldn`t be mistaken for the band at their peak in the mid-`70s, it will certainly entertain those who have stuck with them ever since then. In addition the concert tracks, there are two new studio tracks that are the equal of the live cuts. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Bad Company – Run with the Pack $10.88 Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, guitar); Mick Ralphs (guitar); Boz Burrell (bass); Simon Kirke (drums).Recorded in Grasse, France in September 1975.Digitally remastered by George Marino.Personnel: Paul Rodgers (guitar, accordion, piano); Mick Ralphs (guitar, keyboards); Simon Kirke (drums).Recording information: Grasse, France.By the time of Bad Company`s third release, RUN WITH THE PACK, the critics had begun hitting the band with charges concerning its formulaic approach. The assertion bears some validity but completely misses the only point that really counts: Bad Company had a damn good formula. It is impossible to refute the merits of album opener "Live for the Music." With a cutting three-chord riff and a tugging backbeat, Bad Company levels the overblown art rock of the `70s with a simple 4/4 kick to the gut. The album`s highlights are numerous. The glorious "Silver, Blue and Gold," is possibly the band`s best love song, while the title track travels on a lean path of bedrock. The band also takes a good whack at the Coasters` classic tale of hormonal surges, "Youngblood." Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Bad Company – Burnin` Sky $39.58 Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, piano, guitar); Mick Ralphs (guitar); Boz Burrell (bass); Simon Kirke (drums).Recorded at Le Chateau Studios, Herouville, France in July & August, 1976.All tracks have been digitally remastered.Bad Company had seriously began to wane from critical favor with the release of BURNIN` SKY. Congratulated for the no-frills approach on their debut, Bad Company was subsequently taken to task for sticking with the dynamic that made them a great band in the first place! While nearly every other supergroup in rock history (excepting the Traveling Wilburys) succumbed quickly to the inviting airs of self-importance, Bad Company consistently fueled itself on boiling its blues-based rock down to its barest elements. The title track alone is a potent reminder of the band`s stripped down power and Rodgers` considerable vocal prowess. Even at his most passionate, Rodgers never gives in to histrionics or superfluous emoting. With a simple kick drum and snare pushing him, Rodgers rides over the insinuating two-chord riff in full rock & roll glory. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Bad Company – Straight Shooter $11.98 Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, guitar); Mick Ralphs (guitar); Boz Burrell (bass); Simon Kirke (drums).Recorded on Ronnie Lane`s Mobile at Clearwell Castle, Gloucestershire, England in September 1974.Digitally remastered by George Marino.Personnel: Paul Rodgers (guitar, accordion, piano); Mick Ralphs (guitar, keyboards); Jimmy Horowitz (strings); Simon Kirke (drums).Audio Mixer: Ron Nevison.Audio Remasterer: George Marino.Recording information: Clearwell Castle, Gloucestershire, England (09/1974).Bad Company`s second release, STRAIGHT SHOOTER, stays true to the bare-bones flavor of the band`s stunning self-titled debut. While the group was one of rock`s first supergroups (with members from Free, King Crimson, and Mott the Hoople), Bad Company was the antithesis of the pretentious excess that is usually associated with such formations. STRAIGHT SHOOTER exemplifies the band`s no-frills approach: blues-based rock & roll distilled down the bare framework. The album spawned a handful of FM radio staples, starting with "Feel Like Makin` Love," a prototype power ballad that served as a template for a legion of `80s rockers. The wistful "Shooting Star" revealed a softer side to the band`s usual hard rock dynamic that was seldom seen but just as effective. The charging "Good Lovin` Gone Bad" was yet a third car radio favorite that further established the band as masters of the art of chugging riffs and firmly ensconced backbeats. The overlooked ballad "Call on Me" closes the album with a gentle vocal by Paul Rodgers, who by this album`s release was firmly established as one of the premiere rock vocalists of the `70s. Bad Company (DVD) $8.99 Anthony Hopkins and Chris Rock join up in the action-packed buddy movie BAD COMPANY. When CIA undercover operative Kevin Pope is killed during tense negotiations for a nuclear weapon, agent Gaylord Oakes (Hopkins) recruits the man's twin brother, Jake Hayes (Rock), to take his place and prevent the bomb from getting into the wrong hands. The problem is that Hayes, a streetwise kid who scalps tickets and hustles people playing chess in the parks, didn't even know he had a twin–and now he has only nine days to learn to impersonate his impeccably dressed, well-educated, well-trained agent brother. Rock is funny in this fish-out-of-water story as Hopkins tries desperately to transform him–something he considers to be an impossible mission.Joel Schumacher, the director of such well-regarded films as TIGERLAND and FALLING DOWN, ups the action quotient as Oakes and Hayes and their determined crew (including Gabrielle Macht) travel to locations ranging from Prague to New York to save the world. Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, from NYPD Blue, plays Hayes' love interest, and Peter Stormare is the evil Vas. Hopkins and Rock make a great pair; Hayes is as loose as a goose, and Oakes is as tight as a drum. But as they get to know each other–and get thrown into dangerous situation after dangerous situation–they both discover a little something about life and love.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseAnamorphic WidescreenAudio: Dolby Digital 5.1 – EnglishAdditional Release Material: Featurette – 1. Bad Company (2001) $17.96 Inspired by true events that occurred in France in the mid-’90s, this French-language feature explores the relationship between two best friends who come from opposite sides of the tracks. Delphine (Maud Forget) is 14 years old and shy, a delicate and studious high-school patron who comes from an upper-class background. After following around Olivia (Lou Doillon), the new student at her high school and a dreadlocked, outspoken outcast, the two develop a close bond. Olivia is from a broken home and has a free-spirited approach to life. One night, Olivia takes Delphine to a nightclub where they meet Laurent (Robinson Stevenin), a brooding teenager with whom Delphine falls instantly in love. Olivia similarly falls for Laurent’s friend Alain (Maxime Mansion) and the four enter a free-wheeling world of parties, alcohol, and sexual experimentation. Delphine becomes immersed in the prospect of belonging to someone and begins to sacrifice some of her cherished beliefs to satisfy Laurent. Olivia, the more world-weary of the two, spots Delphine’s blind dedication and tries to help her achieve happiness without succumbing to the indulgent depths to which the foursome is rapidly becoming accustomed. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide veneer, BAD COMPANY is a beautiful story about a lasting friendship between two girls. |

Pure Religion & Bad Company $14.43 This Rev. Gary Davis release has been issued throughout the world under a bevy of names and should not be confused with the Prestige disc simply titled Pure Religion. These recordings are notable for both their sacred and secular nature. Equally as interesting is the wide range of performance styles that the Reverend incorporates throughout this long-player — the first full-length disc to do so. Among them are the rarely displayed preachin’ blues of “Bad Company,” “Runnin’ to the Judgement,” and “Pure Religion.” Notable are the spoken introductions or talkin’ blues recitation techniques, as well as the more obvious and overtly religious themes. Davis took his commitment to the Lord seriously and had become an ordained minister in the summer of 1937. His vehemence and compulsion to spread the word is a blatant motif that works on several simultaneous strata. In the musical parables of “Seven Sisters” — which should not be considered a voodoo reference — and “Right Now,” Davis recalls the fatality of not rebuking sin with lyrics like the following: “Don’t ‘cha put off today for tomorrow — for tomorrow may never be. Let the Saviour bless yo’ soul, right now.” This collection also includes a few equally heady instrumentals — most notably “Cocaine Blues,” “Buck Dance,” and “Hesitation Blues.” Davis’ astonishingly potent guitar playing and conversational approach have arguably never been captured more aptly on record. The direct lineage to artists such as Dave Van Ronk, Jorma Kaukonen, Stefan Grossman, and Brownie McGee becomes infinitely clear. Their versatility in technique coupled with simultaneous chord strumming and picking can be sourced right here. “Moon Goes Down” is one of the more secular pieces and originates in the slave fields as a “holler.” Davis’ emotionally heavy performance and dirge-like chord changes rank the tune among his most emotive recordings. Pure Religion & Bad Company was amended with two additional and otherwise previously unreleased tunes — “Time Is Drawing Near” and “Crucifixion” — when the title was issued on CD in 1991. Both tracks are from the same June 1957 session documented by Tiny Robinson and Fred Gerlach in New York City. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music GuidePerformers: Rev. Gary Davis – Guitar, Vocals |

Bad Company – The Original Bad Co. Anthology $19.94 THE ORIGINAL BAD CO. ANTHOLOGY includes several previously unreleased tracks including four tracks recorded in 1998.Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano); Mick Ralphs (guitar); Boz Burrell (bass); Simon Kirke (drums).Engineers include: Robin Black, Ron Nevison, Chris Kimsey.Recorded between November 1973 and November 1998. Includes liner notes by John McDermott.Digitally remastered by Steve Croxford, Jack "Jacko" Adams, and Walter Coehlo(Masterpiece Mastering, London, England).1974`s BAD COMPANY laid the groundwork for much of the mainstream hard rock that would dominate FM radio and album sales in the 1970s and `80s. Subsequent Bad Company albums would rework the same basic themes, but BAD COMPANY, the group`s opening salvo, was their defining work. It remains a classic of straightforward, blues-based rock.Bad Company`s formation in 1973 signaled the arrival of a blues-rock supergroup. Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke came from Free, guitarist Mick Ralphs was Ian Hunter`s foil in Mott The Hoople and Boz Burrell had done time with King Crimson. ANTHOLOGY collects many of their well-known hits/classic rock staples ("Can`t Get Enough," "Shooting Star," "Rock And Roll Fantasy") on two discs alongside four new tracks recorded in 1998.Bad Company was the first signing to Led Zeppelin`s Swan Song label. Songs such as "Bad Company" and "Good Lovin` Gone Bad" benefited from his Paul Rodger`s rich, bluesy vocal delivery. Much of the band`s material reflected a fascination with the Old West, particularly numbers such as "Deal With The Preacher" and "Whiskey Bottle." Other, overlooked numbers include "Silver, Blue And Gold" and "Oh Atlanta" (a favorite of Alison Krauss, who`s been known to do it in concert). The newly recorded material finds the band returning to their blues-rock roots as they prepare to saddle up for the new millennium. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Bad Company (2002) $13.46 Dignified Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins tries the buddy action-comedy on for size with this typically slick and bombastic offering from producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Hopkins stars as Gaylord Oakes, a CIA spy attempting — along with his partner, Kevin Pope (Chris Rock) — to secure a suitcase-sized nuclear bomb in Prague from a Russian black marketer (Peter Stormare). Just as the partners discover that another bidder for the device exists, they are ambushed and Pope is killed trying to protect Oakes. Desperate for the bomb’s owners and their attackers to believe that Pope is still alive so that the deal can commence in ten days time, Oakes recruits his late partner’s long-lost twin, ticket-scalping chess hustler Jake Hayes (also played by Rock), a small-time criminal who never knew he had a brother. Offered a sizable payday and the admiration of his student nurse girlfriend, Hayes agrees to undergo vigorous training and dangerous situations as he impersonates his brother and helps Oakes to remove the nuclear threat, but the new partners clash in every way possible, from personal discipline to musical taste. Meanwhile, the assassin of the real Kevin Pope sends another cadre of killers after the agent he believes is still alive. Bad Company co-stars Kerry Washington, Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon, Gabriel Macht, and Matthew Marsh. ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide something about life and love. |

The Battlefield: Bad Company cinematic single-player experience captures the freedom and intensity of the franchise’s legendary multiplayer sandbox game play in a dynamic world where nearly everything is destructible. Gamers have total freedom to be daring and innovative, adapting to and tackling challenges in unexpected ‘Battlefield-style’ ways. Create sniping positions by blowing out a piece of a wall or drive your tank straight through a small house. The ever-changing battlefield forces players, their team mates and enemies to react accordingly. The game also features a full suite of the franchise’s trademark multiplayer game play, supporting 24 players online. Battlefield: Bad Company is the first game built from the ground up for next-generation consoles using DICE’s bleeding-edge Frostbite game engine, delivering unrivalled graphics, effects and game play. For ages 16 years and over. |

Bad Company – Burnin` Sky [8/26] $5.92 Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, piano, guitar); Mick Ralphs (guitar); Boz Burrell (bass); Simon Kirke (drums).Recorded at Le Chateau Studios, Herouville, France in July & August, 1976.All tracks have been digitally remastered.Additional personnel: Mel Collins (flute, saxophone).Bad Company had seriously began to wane from critical favor with the release of BURNIN` SKY. |
