Albert King

Albert King
Battles of WWI, to King Albert of Belgium the first fought in?

What were some important matches that King Albert fought in? What were some of his great achievemnts during WW1? And what was the other general facts about him?

If you google a bit you can find his biography. As head of the army, he did not fight personal but he was certainly the most senior general who has ever visited the front or surface of the front. It was much appreciated by his soldiers (young son of King Albert, would later become King Leopold III fought in the front line, was Queen Elizabeth's nurse in military hospitals, no other state can say that the head of state had so close contact with his soldiers as Belgium) He was also the only head of state who resisted Joffre, Foch and Haigh, when asked to attacks against well defended German positions. When there was a chance for success, he attacked the Belgian army. Battles that he attended as head of the Belgian Army: Liège, tail, the 3 attacks from Antwerp (one player an important role in the Battle of the Marne, as it kept German troops in Belgium, which might have made the difference), Battle of Antwerp, Battle of the Yser (the main struggle for survival in Belgium) Merkem. Indirect estimates in Africa was the Force Publique stopped the Germans and threw them out of Rwanda, Burundi and helped the British-South African troops. In 1918 he was given command of the army Flanders group, which consisted of the Belgian Army, French, British and American divisions. King Albert was in very high esteem by his soldiers because he treated them humanely and not participate in matches that had a chance to make a breakthrough. This compares with the French and British "Butcher" generals. Maybe the difference was that he visited front and not only remained in his headquarters.

Producers: Al Jackson, Jr., Henry Bush, Allen Jones, Don Nix, Donald Dunn, Albert King.Includes liner notes by Lee Hildebrand.Personnel: Albert King (vocals, keyboards).Liner Note Author: Lee Hildebrand.Recording information: Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, CA."The best of Albert King"? More like the best material that he happened to record for Stax between 1968 and 1973. Even that`s debatable, the 13 tracks including covers such as "Honky Tonk Woman," "Sky Is Crying," and "Hound Dog." It does present a reasonable cross-section of his soul-inflected work of the period, drawing from over a half-dozen LPs and a couple of singles, though you might be as well or better off with his more focused individual titles. And for the true "best of Albert King," Rhino`s Ultimate Collection remains the hands-down winner. ~ Richie Unterberger Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

With 16 tracks that span the gamut from King`s early-`60s recordings for the King label (including the punchy, jump-blues of "C.O.D.") to a 1976 single for Utopia (the string-sweetened "Cadillac Assembly Line"), the album includes nearly all his most essential tracks. The lion`s share of the material here is from the axeman`s auspicious tenure with Stax from 1966 to 1973. The Stax cuts are graced by the label`s session musicians (the very thought of King in the studio with Booker T. and the M.G.`s is enough to make the heart race), and feature some of King`s best songwriting, singing, and playing.Unlike many electric blues players, King never relies on pyrotechnics, but instead is distinguished by feel, phrasing, and his searing, open tone. His unique style is in full flower on incontestable classics "Laundromat Blues," the probing "Personal Manager," and the slow-burn blues anthem "Born Under A Bad Sign." King`s singing is always on point too--soulful, and never overstated. This is a perfect place for the uninitiated to begin exploring the impressive catalogue of this blues giant. Because King`s style is so irreducible, the concept actually works, as he fills this album with his traditional, high-voltage guitar work and strong vocals. That isn`t surprising, since four of the nine tunes on here originally started as R&B hits covered by Presley, including an instrumental version of Smiley Lewis` "One Night." No matter what the original sources may be, though, this is a strong showing in King`s catalog. ~ Cub Koda Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Recorded between 1959 and 1962.All of King`s recordings for the Bobbin label are on this 22-track disc, including everything from his 1959-1963 singles for the label and previously unissued alternate takes of "Why Are You So Mean to Me," "The Time Has Come," and the previously unissued "Blues at Sunrise." While these are decent journeyman urban blues/R&B, they`re not up to the level of his subsequent recordings for Stax. Albert King just sounds too much like the records another King -- B.B. King, that is -- was making during the same era. There are similar horn arrangements and alternation of stinging guitar with smooth, confident vocal phrasing. It`s a tribute to Albert King`s abilities, in a way, that it does sound confident, and not the work of an imitator, despite the similarities. Some more variety to largely self-penned songs would have made his Bobbin era stand out more too. It does feature his sole big R&B hit from his stint with the label, "Don`t Throw Your Love on Me So Strong," a showcase for his mean, lean guitar licks that increases the drama with changing drum tempos. Of the other songs, the standout is "Ooo-Ee Baby," in which King really draws out the vibrato in a slow blues with earthy tension, sounding more spontaneous than he did on many of his other Bobbin singles. The production`s more basic than that of his Stax sides, but is hardly raw, with a jazzy lilt to the horns in particular. Rock fans will recognize "I Get Evil" as essentially the same song as "Don`t Lie to Me," which the Rolling Stones covered (and whose composition was erroneously credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards when it appeared on the Stones` Metamorphosis). ~ Richie Unterberger Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. It was produced by John Mayall at Wolfman Jack Studios in Los Angeles on August 28, 1971.As to why it wasn`t released at the time of its recording, Mayall said "The intent was to make it different from the Stax sound. I accomplished that but also got it canned because Stax obviously couldn`t cope with that. It didn`t sound like their stuff, so they didn`t release it."It is an inspired pairing of King, one of the most influential guitar stylist of the modern blues, and Mayall, the chief conceptualist of the British blues revival of the Sixties. It sounds different from anything King had recorded before or since, a three-way fusion of Mississippi Delta blues, British blues, and Los Angeles jazz. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. This timely Stax retrospective is a concise overview of some of the guitarist`s most significant tracks, including his first hit single, "Don`t Throw Your Love on Me So Strong," the elemental blues song "Born Under a Bad Sign," later covered by Cream, and the guitar tour de force of "I`ll Play the Blues for You." Hodges; Wilbur Thompson; Rick Watson; Sam King.Albert King`s affiliation with Stax Records was an auspicious one. Though King worked in a traditional blues metier, the groovy R&B sound of the label influenced his recordings (the backing band on his original Stax sessions was none other than Booker T. and the M.G.`s). The result--a smooth, organ-flavored soul take on King`s deep-fried electric blues--was a hit with soul, rock, and blues fans alike. That recipe is heard to perfect effect on this live set, recorded at the Montreux Jazz festival in 1973.The driving opener, "Don`t Burn Down the Bridge (`Cause You Might Wanna Come Back Across"), gives the listener notice of what`s to come, King`s blues-drenched vocals and blistering leads supported by a fine backing band (including a tenor sax player and two trumpets). The musicians do not disappoint the festival crowd; takes on Ray Charles`s "I Believe to My Soul" and Don Nix`s funky "For the Love of a Woman" alternate with King originals "Roadhouse Blues" and the wrenching "Blues at Sunrise." Naturally, King`s playing is in the forefront throughout, and that is a great thing indeed. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
Albert King - King Of The Blues Guitar Albert King - King Of The Blues Guitar

Recorded 1966-68.Backed by Booker T & the MGs and the Memphis Horns, Albert King (confusingly, no relation to Freddie or BB--though he named himself after the latter) shows off his spare, elastic, fluid guitar style on this definitive compilation. Songs such as "Laundromat Blues", "Oh, Pretty Woman," and the immortal "Crosscut Saw" with its sinuous, interweaving rhythms are blues classics, while "Born Under a Bad Sign" and "The Hunter" were later covered by Cream and Bad Company respectively. The combination of King and the Memphis musicians makes for some thrilling moments--particularly the guitar`s entry under the horns on "Sign" and the interplay between King`s guitar and Al Jackson`s samba-style drums in "Crosscut Saw." Though King never achieved the fame of the man whose name he took, he created his fair share of great blues recordings, and KING OF THE BLUES GUITAR is an excellent primer to his unique style. "The best of Albert King"? More like the best material that he happened to record for Stax between 1968 and 1973. Even that's debatable, the 13 tracks including covers such as "Honky Tonk Woman," "Sky Is Crying," and "Hound Dog." It does present a reasonable cross-section of his soul-inflected work of the period, drawing from over a half-dozen LPs and a couple of singles, though you might be as well or better off with his more focused individual titles. And for the true "best of Albert King," Rhino's Ultimate Collection remains the hands-down winner. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuidePerformers: Albert King - Keyboards, Vocals

There have been many compilations of Albert King's classic Stax recordings over the years, including the wonderful double-disc set The Ultimate Collection, but Rhino's The Very Best of Albert King is perhaps the best for curious listeners, since it offers 16 classics on one disc. There may be a few favorites missing, from "The Hunter" to "The Phone Booth," but the disc does a wonderful job of summarizing the classic Stax years while adding some highlights from his latter-day recordings for Tomato. In the end, what matters is that the bare basics -- "Let's Have a Natural Ball," "C.O.D.," "Laundromat Blues," "Oh Pretty Woman," "Crosscut Saw," "Born Under a Bad Sign," "Personal Manager," "Blues Power" -- are all here, making this ideal for neophytes on a tight budget. All of King's recordings for the Bobbin label are on this 22-track disc, including everything from his 1959-1963 singles for the label and previously unissued alternate takes of "Why Are You So Mean to Me," "The Time Has Come," and the previously unissued "Blues at Sunrise." While these are decent journeyman urban blues/R&B, they're not up to the level of his subsequent recordings for Stax. Albert King just sounds too much like the records another King -- B.B. King, that is -- was making during the same era. There are similar horn arrangements and alternation of stinging guitar with smooth, confident vocal phrasing. It's a tribute to Albert King's abilities, in a way, that it does sound confident, and not the work of an imitator, despite the similarities. Some more variety to largely self-penned songs would have made his Bobbin era stand out more too. It does feature his sole big R&B hit from his stint with the label, "Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong," a showcase for his mean, lean guitar licks that increases the drama with changing drum tempos. Of the other songs, the standout is "Ooo-Ee Baby," in which King really draws out the vibrato in a slow blues with earthy tension, sounding more spontaneous than he did on many of his other Bobbin singles. The production's more basic than that of his Stax sides, but is hardly raw, with a jazzy lilt to the horns in particular. Rock fans will recognize "I Get Evil" as essentially the same song as "Don't Lie to Me," which the Rolling Stones covered (and whose composition was erroneously credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards when it appeared on the Stones' Metamorphosis). ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuidePerformers: Albert King - Guitar, Vocals; Freddie Robinette - Sax (Baritone); Wilbur Thompson - Trumpet; Harold White - Sax (Tenor)

A left-handed, self-taught guitar player who played his instrument upside down and backwards, Albert King could wring out guitar leads that were as sharp as razor blades zinging along a telephone line, but he was also a well-rounded musician, having played drums in Chicago for Jimmy Reed and was a good enough singer to have been part of a gospel quartet called the Harmony Kings. But his claim to fame and history will always be his guitar playing, and in particular, the sides he cut between 1966 and 1974 for Stax Records, the best of which are collected here. Stax was known for its funky Southern soul sides, and the blues wasn't really on the table for the imprint when King cut "Laundromat Blues" for them in 1966. The song did well enough that King became Stax's blues division almost single-handedly, releasing classics like "Crosscut Saw" in 1966 and King's signature tune, "Born Under a Bad Sign," written by William Bell and Booker T. Jones, in 1967. All of these are here, along with a slower and funkier remake of "Crosscut Saw" that King cut for Stax in 1974, making this compilation not only a fine introduction to this fiery guitar player, but also a solid survey of his peak years. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide

Originally titled King Does the King's Thing, here's Albert King adding his own touch to a batch of Elvis Presley tunes. Because King's style is so irreducible, the concept actually works, as he fills this album with his traditional, high-voltage guitar work and strong vocals. That isn't surprising, since four of the nine tunes on here originally started as R&B hits covered by Presley, including an instrumental version of Smiley Lewis' "One Night." No matter what the original sources may be, though, this is a strong showing in King's catalog. ~ Cub Koda, All Music GuidePerformers: James Alexander - Bass; Steve Cropper - Guitar; Donald "Duck" Dunn - Bass; Willie Hall - Drums; Al Jackson, Jr. - Drums; Albert King - Guitar, Vocals; Marvell Thomas - Organ, Piano; Michael Toles - Guitar

Victoria & Albert Victoria & Albert
$17.96

While 18-year-old Victoria (Victoria Hamilton) struggles to escape the rule of her domineering mother (Penelope Wilton), King William IV dies and the teenager assumes the throne as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland and empress of India. With the help of sympathetic advisers and her lady-in-waiting, Baroness Lehzen (Diana Rigg), Victoria asserts herself, relocating her mother's living quarters and dismissing her mother's overbearing supporter, Sir John Conroy (Patrick Malahide). She then reluctantly agrees to invite her first cousin, Albert (Jonathan Firth), prince-consort of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Germany, to the royal household as a possible match for her. Remembering him from childhood, she thinks him a bore. But when grown-up Albert arrives, Victoria falls madly in love with him. After they marry, Victoria must counter troublemaking political schemers on the one hand while attempting to assuage a disenchanted Albert on the other. The problem is that he has nothing to do. He is merely an ornament, albeit a cherished one. He cannot even command a servant to clean a fireplace. However, when the administration of the queen's friend and adviser Prime Minister Melbourne (Nigel Hawthorne) collapses, Albert becomes Victoria's partner in government as well as in marriage. In time, she realizes that her husband is really a co-ruler: A king, she says, in everything but name. Together, they reign over their empire -- and their brood of nine children. It is Albert's task to supervise the country's Great Exhibition of 1851 to promote British pride, commerce, and industry. But his untiring efforts to make the exhibit a success take their toll on him, and he falls ill. However, he tenaciously clings to life -- and Victoria -- and lives another decade before typhoid fever claims him in 1862, leaving behind a distraught Victoria and a monarchy he helped rescue. ~ Mike Cummings, All Movie Guide

The world remembers Queen Victoria as a staid and stately dowager in black. But when the teenaged Drina ascended to the throne, she was a vibrant young woman of powerful emotions, which found their greatest outlet in her consuming love for her German-born husband, Prince Albert. VICTORIA AND ALBERT tells the true story of their remarkable union, a bond of passion, politics and power that helped restore dignity and respect to a monarchy long held in contempt. Victoria Hamilton (Mansfield Park, King Lear) and Jonathan Firth (Middlemarch, An Ideal Husband) play the royal couple to perfection, and the exceptional supporting cast includes Diana Rigg, Jonathan Pryce, Nigel Hawthorne and Sir Peter Ustinov. A&E and the BBC proudly present the compelling tale of the original Victorian romance--a love affair that changed the world. Personnel: Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan (vocals, guitar); Tony Llorens (piano, organ); Gus Thornton (bass); Michael Llorens (drums).Recorded at CHCH studios, Hamilton, Ontario on December 6, 1983.This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.Recorded in December 1983, IN SESSION captures an in-concert jam between Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, the latter of whom had become the hot blues guitarist of the year thanks to his debut Texas Flood, as well as his work on David Bowie`s hit Let`s Dance. Vaughan may have been the new news at the time, but King was not suffering either--he had a world-class supporting band and was playing as well as he ever had. In other words, the stage was set for a fiery, exciting concert and that`s exactly what they delivered. Vaughan was clearly influenced by King--there are King licks all over his first two recorded efforts, and it was an influence that stayed with him to the end--and he was unafraid to go toe-to-toe with his idol. King must have been impressed, since IN SESSION never devolves into a mere cutting contest. Instead, each musician spurs the other to greater heights. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. On this seven-song set at San Francisco`s Fillmore Auditorium, the St. Louis-based guitarist truly gets his mojo working and schools the predominantly hippie crowd in the ways of the blues, offering up sinister, simmering takes on classics such as "I Get Evil" and "Born Under a Bad Sign." Although King is backed by a band on this date, the group is wise enough to stick to minimal accompaniment, allowing King`s bold, expressive vocals and electrifying lead work to carry each song. As on LIVE WIRE/BLUES POWER, King opens with an upbeat cover of Herbie Hancock`s soul-jazz hit "Watermelon Man," proving that the staunch bluesman could certainly mix it up if he felt so inclined. While many other fine King live recordings are available, this is one of his best--essential for devoted fans. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Barr.Recorded in December 1983, IN SESSION captures an in-concert jam between Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, the latter of whom had become the hot blues guitarist of the year thanks to his debut Texas Flood, as well as his work on David Bowie`s hit Let`s Dance. 2005. Albert King - Live Wire/Blues Power (Stax) Albert King - Live Wire/Blues Power (Stax)
$10.98

Solo performer: Albert King (vocals, guitar).Recorded live at the Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco. Originally released on Stax (2003).Personnel: Albert King (vocals, guitar); Al Jackson, Jr. (drums).Liner Note Author: Jumpin` Gene Simmons.Recording information: The Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA.By 1968, after years of regional success and low-profile gigging, Albert King had attained significant popularity among both blues and rock audiences. The 1967 release of his Stax debut BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN had achieved crossover success, and he was regularly sharing stages with the likes of Jimi Hendrix at Bill Graham`s Fillmore auditorium in San Francisco. That venue is the setting for this live recording, which catches King at the height of his game, both vocally and as an axeman.King throws a curveball with the opener, a boogaloo-tinged rendition of Herbie Hancock`s "Watermelon Man." "Blues Power," in its spoken, call-and-response interludes and King`s stinging electric leads, testifies to the redemptive strength of the form. The high-energy overdrive of "Nightstomp," complete with slightly distorted amplification, seems suited to the young revelers one imagines in the audience that evening, and the deeply soulful "Blues at Sunrise" shows off some of King`s best fretwork. All told, this is a stellar set from one of blues` most influential and appealing figures. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
Albert King - I`ll Play The Blues For You Albert King - I`ll Play The Blues For You
$10.98

Personnel: Albert King (vocals, guitar); The Memphis Horns (horns); The Bar-Kays & The Movement (bass, drums).Originally released on Stax (3009). Includes liner notes by Tom Wheeler.Personnel: Albert King (vocals, guitar); The Memphis Horns (horns).Audio Remixer: Henry Bush.Liner Note Author: Tom Wheeler.Recording information: Memphis (1972).Unknown Contributor Role: The Isaac Hayes Movement.Arrangers: Henry Bush; Allen Jones .It`s not as if Albert King hadn`t tasted success in his first decade and a half as a performer, but his late-`60s/early-`70s recordings for Stax did win him a substantially larger audience. During those years, the label began earning significant clout amongst rock fans through events like Otis Redding`s appearance at the Monterey International Pop Festival and a seemingly endless string of classic singles. When King signed to the label in 1966, he was immediately paired with the Stax session team Booker T. & the MG`s. The results were impressive: "Crosscut Saw," "Laundromat Blues," and the singles collection Born Under a Bad Sign were all hits. Though 1972`s I`ll Play the Blues for You followed a slightly different formula, the combination of King, members of the legendary Bar-Kays, the Isaac Hayes Movement, and the sparkling Memphis Horns was hardly a risky endeavor. The result was a trim, funk-infused blues sound that provided ample space for King`s oft-imitated guitar playing. King has always been more impressive as a soloist than a singer, and some of his vocal performances on I`ll Play the Blues for You lack the intensity one might hope for. As usual, he more than compensates with a series of exquisite six-string workouts. The title track and "Breaking Up Somebody`s Home" both stretch past seven minutes, while "I`ll Be Doggone" and "Don`t Burn Down the Bridge" (where King coaxes a crowd to "take it to the bridge," James Brown-style) break the five-minute barrier. Riding strutting lines by bassist James Alexander, King runs the gamut from tough, muscular playing to impassioned cries on his instrument, making I`ll Play the Blues for You one of a handful of his great Stax sets. ~ Nathan Bush Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. $10.98

Personnel: Albert King (vocals, guitar); Willie James Exon (guitar); James Washington (organ); Roosevelt Pointer (bass); Theotis Morgan (drums).Recorded live at the Fillmore West, San Francisco, California on July 27, 1968. Includes liner notes by Lee Hildebrand.Imagine 1968 at the Fillmore in San Francisco, the epicenter of the flower power scene. Before an audience of long haired-hippies attired in day-glo and paisley, the incomparable Albert King steps on stage to deliver the gospel of down-home, Memphis-fried blues. Such is the setting for this entry in King`s series of `68 Fillmore recordings (the others are Wednesday NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO and LIVE WIRE/BLUES POWER).King had a good deal of cache with `60s rock audiences; his fierce, soulful leads had inspired the likes of Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, and his 1967 Stax debut BORN UNDER A BAD SIGN had achieved crossover success. Abetted by a tight backing band (generating a sound reminiscent of Booker T. and the M.G.`s), King`s blend of raw, traditional blues with smooth, Stax-flavored soul hits the mark. From the jaunty, uptempo opening number "You Upset Me, Baby," through the deep, slow "Drifting Blues," to the rollicking "Ooh-Ee-Baby," King`s vocals and chops are in prime form on this excellent live set. When he linked up with the cream of Stax`s Memphis musicians, including Booker T. And The MGs and the Memphis Horns, that connection was made. "Laundromat Blues", "Oh, Pretty Woman" and "Crosscut Saw" set the scene for "Born Under A Bad Sign" and "The Hunter", which quickly found their way into the repertoires of Cream and Free. The convolutions of his guitar style were perfectly complemented by the trademark Stax funk rhythms. The team went on to make many more singles and albums, none of which could surpass the achievements of their first meeting. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

This ten-track budget set from Warner`s Flashback label includes the original versions of bluesman Albert King`s biggest hits, like "Crosscut Saw," "Laundromat Blues," and of course "Born Under a Bad Sign." The selection is decent, but some fans may question the deletion of King signature songs "Blues Power" and "I`ll Play the Blues for You, Pt. 1." These guys were simply havin` fun with some standard soul/R&B covers (e.g. "What`d I Say," "Baby What You Want Me To Do") and some wide-open originals, kickin` back with some serious riffin`. Cropper proffers his usual intense, simplistic soloing, while King swoops and dives in a stringbending fury. The added plus is the silky smooth near-falsetto of Pop Staples, whose vocal on "Tupelo" is suitably eerie... ~ John Dougan, Option 20_88 Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
